The balance of sthira and sukha, effort and sweetness, is one of my favourite things to play with in my practice. I tend to like both ends of the spectrum, lots of effort or lots of relaxation, but the combination can be challenging. A teacher once told me to keep a pose alive with breath, using the inhale and exhale to explore the edges, and that’s when things clicked. The ease, or efficiency, of a posture is just one of its edges. Now I know that if I’ve lost my smile, I’ve probably also lost my breath and the ease of the practice.

"All that we are is the result of what we have thought." Such a powerful statement, and within it holds so much truth. Our potential is INFINITE. Everything that we are and everything in our life is a residual outcome and representation of our past thoughts and actions.
When we define ourselves by different aspects of our life, we will continue to have more of the same in the future. This applies to everything in our lives, whether attaining goals and growing or remaining where you are. Your current state of affairs is not who you are, it is your situation, it is who you *were*. This entire stream of thinking is directly inspired by the profound statements by @jamesarthurray in The Secret.
Especially meaningful is the quandary to ask yourself: What would the person I'm *becoming* do in this situation? Make decisions upon where you are going vs. where you are.
Which means we have to strive and intentionally give more time and energy to the right things... Find those things... I am constantly uncovering that is where our happiness (and even success) lives.
My yoga practice has become one of my biggest creative outlets as I progress and explore the abilities of my body. Carving out time to be fully present has been one of the best decisions I continue to make for my happiness. Though there is a huge, supportive, informative Yoga community on Instagram, I don't regularly share my practice (which is sometimes a quick 15 minute sun salutation), but I do sometimes feel drawn to do so. Helpful to look back for comparison. Since growth happens so naturally with yoga, it is so encouraging to see a visual representation of growth.
Feeling so empowered since my realization during my flow yesterday that I can comfortably bring my foot all the way to my head after flipping my grip and transitioning from #pigeonpose / #mermaidpose to #oneleggedkingpigeon as seen here. I had space left and deepened the pose to see just how close I could get and then felt my foot on my head! Talk about amazing feels. Plan to get back on the mat and incorporate more fluid transitions, but felt so compelled to share! Namaste 🙌🏻 🎶Shine- Alvin Risk

#IKnowWhoIAm - Part 6
Someone wise once said “If you aren’t making mistakes, you aren’t making decisions.”
Nate and I decided to build a tiny house completely on a whim. We were sitting on the couch watching Nextfix and Nate said “We should build a tiny house.”
I said. “Okay!”
I was tired of overthinking good things.
I honestly knew we would do it.
When we started building I realized how little I knew about building a house.. king stud, nail gun, chop saw.
I relied on Nate to tell me what to do because it seemed like he had all the experience.
One day he got frustrated with me because, once again, I had pegged myself as the follower — constantly waiting for instructions. Then I realized that what he wanted and needed was a partner.
I was scared to make decisions because I was afraid to be yelled at and tore down.
It took me weeks to start fully taking initiative, but when I started taking the lead on projects I felt amazing! Yes, I made plenty of mistakes. So did Nate, but we backed each other up.
Go ahead. Make some decisions; take the lead.
Take responsibility for your mistakes, but don’t let anyone drag you through the mud for making the wrong call.
If you aren’t making mistakes, you aren’t making decisions.
I was feeling a bit panicky about my upcoming performance but I managed to go through my song in its entirety for the first time! I learnt this pretty move a couple of weeks ago and it's a new favourite - feels super secure!
“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” Vincent Van Gogh
One of my favourite ways to teach a yoga class is to take a big, challenging, awe-inspiring pose, one that makes you think ‘there’s no way I can do that’ and break it down
To look at where you can strengthen, and where you can create space and flexibility, to explore the feeling of the pose and the intention you bring to it.
Weaving together a sequence that illuminates the parts of the pose, like pieces of a puzzle, until you feel confident and courageous enough to try putting them all back together in that one big pose again.
And maybe you succeed there in that class, or maybe you smile at all you’ve learned, those fun variations you’ve discovered as you moved towards it, the feelings of greater strength and flexibility.
And you get to take away all those puzzle pieces, continuing to build your confidence, until they all fit together in that final pose.
The pose that shows you your own strength and ability to do more than you imagined possible.
Now tell me, what’s one pose you never imagined you’d be able to do, and now you can!? Or one that you’re working on?
Join me in class this week Tuesday 7.30pm and Thursday 7am @yogagarden__ #newquay Or if you can’t make it to class why not try my online mermaid 🧜♀️ class where I break down this pose in a creative and fluid flow (link in bio).
💎 Day 6 of the #crystalyogachallenge 💎
𝐅𝐥𝐮𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 ✧ Pigeon pose
Stone of clarity, self confidence, concentration, and mental order. This is one of my favorites. I have a @thirdeyepinecone with this stone 💜💚 It typically contains green and purple colors, giving it an incredible synergistic energy that heals and rejuvenates the aura. It will also heal you from emotional trauma. This will help balance your heart, throat, and third eye chakras. We paired it with pigeon pose because that pose helps release emotions. It is a primal reaction to store stress, trauma, fear and anxiety in the hips. These bottled up feelings create tight hips, and this pose will release it.

today was day 15 of #66toshift and I'm grateful for how this challenge has pushed me to switch up my usual practice and try new classes. I had so much fun trying out some new aerial yoga poses tonight!! the feeling of hanging upside down with the support of the hammock and being able to go deeper into positions that are difficult for me to attain on the ground is a pretty cool feeling. 😊💙 namaste. 🙏
#aerialyoga - the final shape of this pose reminds me of a modified #mermaidpose except upside down 🙃
I am capable of many feats which have yet to be revealed, even to myself.
I can’t help but smile deeply in this truth.
Because there lies no doubt that all will be realized.
