This spätburgunder was one of the wines to be blind tasted on the ⭐️ Masters of Wine Examination 2017 ⭐️. Martin Wassmer his wines are part of the top of Baden its wine industry. Spätburgunder is his star grape and takes up 55% of his total production. Low yields, handpicked grapes, 10 kg cases, natural yeast, 3 pump overs a day, low temperature fermentation, all ingredients for this incredible wine🔥. On the nose forest fruits, raspberries and cherries, spices, some earthiness/forest aromas, a lot is happening but elegant and delicately. On the palate juicy and soft, pleasant and delicate tannin structure, on the finish great acidity 🤤. Chapeau 👏🏽 !
Tasting German Pinot Noir locally has really opened my eyes to the quality and value of wines in the region. The absolute star that I have to recommend you seek out is this - the snappily named Schlatter Spatburgunder SW 2014 by Martin Wassmer.
On the nose there’s this wonderful bouquet of autumnal aromas. Dark chocolate, laced with cinnamon and hints of bacon. On the palate there’s an imperceptibly fine grain to the tannins and the texture is gorgeous and silky. Finish - long, uninterrupted and complex.
It’s rare to find great value Pinot these days (thanks Rudy..) but this is worth putting on your radar.
