‘A painting is not about an experience. It is an experience.' - Mark Rothko (1903-1970)
.
Because a Well-Appointed Life is one that leaves its mark, we celebrate artistic relationships (personal and inspirational) that in turn have inspired artists, collectors, and enthusiasts through the generations.
.
‘No.3/No.13’ or ‘Magenta, Black, Green on Orange’ was created by Mark Rothko in 1949 and is one of his most famous ‘Color Field’ paintings: an exemplary of his signature motif of symmetrical rectangular forms hovering over a colored surface which he explored and developed for over 23 years! By blurring the edges of the rectangles, Rothko creates a sense of movement in the painting: an illusion of forms gently dissolving in and out of the canvas that invites viewers to draw closer to capture this gentle motion.
.
This new form of expression also left an indelible mark on Fernando Zóbel, who saw an exhibition of Rothko’s paintings while at the Rhode Island School of Design in the 1950s. It was a turning point in Zóbel’s trajectory as an artist and cemented the young artist’s commitment to abstraction.

مارک روتکو | Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz (Russian: Ма́ркус Я́ковлевич Ротко́вич, Latvian: Markuss Rotkovičs; September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970), was an American painter of Russian Jewish descent. Although Rothko himself refused to adhere to any art movement, he is generally identified as an abstract expressionist.

Mark Rothko sought to make paintings that would bring people to tears. “I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions—tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on,” he declared. “And the fact that a lot of people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I can communicate those basic human emotions….If you…are moved only by their color relationships, then you miss the point.”1 Like his fellow New York School painters Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still, Rothko painted to plumb the depths of himself and the human condition. For him, art was a profound form of communication, and art making was a moral act.

Red on Maroon (1959), Oil paint, pigments and glue on canvas, support: 266.7 cm x 457.2 cm, © Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko/DACS 2018 .
In early 1958, Rothko was commissioned to paint a series of murals for the exclusive Four Seasons restaurant in the Seagram Building in New York, designed by Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson. .
Rothko was interested in the possibility of having a lasting setting for his paintings to be seen as a group. He wanted to create an encompassing environment akin to the one he had encountered upon visiting Michelangelo’s vestibule in the Laurentian Library in Florence in 1950 and again in 1959. .
He once said, "I was much influenced subconsciously by Michelangelo’s walls in the staircase room of the Medicean Library in Florence. He achieved just the kind of feeling I’m after – he makes the viewers feel that they are trapped in a room where all the doors and windows are bricked up so that all they can do is butt their heads forever against the wall."
.
Rothko started work on the Seagram commission in a large new studio, which allowed him to simulate the restaurant’s private dining room. .
Between 1958 and 1959, Rothko created three series of paintings, however, he grew unsatisfied with the first, so he decided to sell these paintings as individual panels. In the second and third series, Rothko experimented with varying permutations of the floating window frame and moved towards a more sombre colour palette, to counter the perception that his work was decorative. .
Red on Maroon belongs to the third series, in which the blocks of colour within the works had become more defined. By the time Rothko had completed these paintings, he had become unsure about the appropriateness of the restaurant setting, which eventually led him to withdraw from the commission. .

Amongst all of the stunning photos taken of my baking by @matt_inwood. This is one of my favourites, as it looks like a piece of art by Mark Rothko. I think I will title it “Banana-bread on blue” and submit it to the Tate modern. Lovely work Matt. 🙌

“No. 1” (Royal, Red and Blue) Mark Rothko 1954
Mark Rothko, Untitled (Blue, Dark Blue Yellow), 1950 // “A picture lives by companionship, expanding and quickening in the eyes of the sensitive observer. It dies by the same token. It is therefore a risky and unfeeling act to send it out into the world. How often it must be permanently impaired by the eyes of the vulgar and the cruelty of the impotent who would extend the affliction universally.”

INSPIRATION Vibes. Abstract Art is my absolute favorite Art Style the fact it doesn’t represent reality, and so simple yet complicated just Wows me #markrothko #jacksonpollock #henrimatisse #nationalgalleryofart
#MyFantasyArtCollection is not meant as a political statement, but in my fantasy (don’t worry mom, I know social media isn’t reality) I collect art that deals with the human condition, in one form or another. Like this #MarkRothko, Four Darks in Red, from 1948. The artist famously said of his so called “multiform" paintings; “I’m only interested in expressing basic human emotions—tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on. And the fact that a lot of people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I can communicate those basic human emotions… The people who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience I had when I painted them. And if you, as you say, are moved only by their color relationship, then you miss the point."

ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, is an often misunderstood condition and my experience of it has shaped both my experience of the art world and my own art
Like other neurodivergent conditions people with ADHD have different traits that affect the way they experience the world. We can find it difficult to filter out sight and sounds or have a single point of focus. However this can go from multiple input distractions to finding; colours, patterns, sounds or even thoughts so irresistible they cause hyperfocus. This hyperfocus or obsession is difficult to control and I found different painters work or even their ideas can cause a hyperfocus for me.
I have spent years trying to work out what elements I find irresistible, from an idea withing Paul Klee’s Pedagogical Sketchbook, to colours, patterns, compositions or concepts of other artists, that have really impacted on me through my condition; #GillianAyres#DonaldJudd#WillemDeKooning#RobertRauschenberg#FranzMarc#GerhardRichter#BridgetRiley#MarcelDuchamp#AlbertIrvin#YvesKlein#MarkRothko#FrankAuerbach#HowardHodgkin
Elements of individual works have influenced me in my approach to the creative process. In the 1920s Paul Klee took a line for a walk with complimentary forms, and Rauchenberg with Erased de Kooning Drawing 1953 created an original work from existing work. He didn’t destroy a De Kooning drawing but transformed it creating an archeology to the work within its narrative challenging the permanence or finality of any work.
The elements include; pallets, proximities and positions of colours within the composition as well as the theatricality of place in relation to their setting. These relationships are transposed into my own format including application which comes from childhood experiences of untangling knots (brightly coloured mop heads) and sorting colored beads that my mother used to utilise my traits.
Instead of trying to supress a condition that is a fundamental part of my own identity I have learned to indulge my traits as part of my creative process, as such my painting is an embodiment and expression of my sensory and emotional experiences of the world.

Day 3. I think I’m starting to take a trip in my mind about my relationship to these artists. The first group of painters here will all be a part of the first time I saw any of their works in person. Which happened around 2002 at the @chryslermuseum in Norfolk Virginia. .
Walking through the museum from the old “masters” sections. I finally made it to the modern section. Finding myself in some sort of lame installation that looked like a life sized Barbie doll house. I see a small opening that goes into the next room. Immediately as I walk through this small doorway I see a Rothko from 1949. The same year as my Moms birth. Blues greens and grays a plenty. The scribble on the side always messed with me. Seemed like a bad thought he had just as someone came to buy it. I’ll never forget this day. Tomorrow we visit Hans and the lessons from that viewing. .

Can you tell that I got a new camera? (please tell me yes). The problem, though, is that I’ve never been more frustrated with taking pictures. It’s a fancy camera with lots of buttons that I have no idea what they do and how to use them. The pictures generally turn out fantastic but when I’m looking through the viewfinder, I can picture how the final image will look in my mind, with this specific lighting and contrast, but I rarely capture that moment. And let’s not even get to my editing skills...
—
It’s a challenge though and challenges are meant to be overcome. What excites me is that there are moments like this where everything does fall into place for a perfect picture. Even with how those paintings in the background are side by side, it’s like the range of emotions I go through when I take my camera out for a day of shooting. Those mellow moments, the fiery annoyances, and then the perfect balances. Ups and downs that make me wanna tear my hair out but also make it so worth it when I’m incrementally learning how to use the new gear.

Overexposed. Probably. Blurry people. Most definitely. But eventually, just right.

— It’s a challenge though and challenges are meant to be overcome. — Overexposed. Probably. Blurry people. Most definitely. But eventually, just right. — #MarkRothko  #NGADC  #NationalGalleryOfArt  #NationalMall  #AbstractExpressionism  #Amateur  #BigPainting  #ArtLovers  #ArtDrunk
