ROTATIONAL BACK PAIN
Although back pain itself can suck, it’s usually the things that it limits people from doing that gets them to come see me. Golf 🏌️♀️ , soccer ⚽️ , boxing 🥊, baseball ⚾️, gymnastics 🤸♀️. If you’re having pain with the rotational aspect of these movements, it’s likely partially due to a capacity issue that can be worked on through gradual, progressive overload utilizing various resistances and speeds.
The video above demonstrates two ways to progress the ability of the low back to tolerate rotational movements. Although @dr.nicolept displays this in a squat and half kneeling, you can use whatever position of your choosing such as sitting or tall kneeling.
As you can see in the video, she begins with an easy on/off isometric with good control. Next, she progresses to a static hold that can be held for as long as you want. She then either uses the band to rotate slowly or holds the band in the isometric position while performing sidesteps to make the movement dynamic. Finally, she ends with a medicine ball throw.
This is just one example of how you can break this movement down, but it’s going to vary for everyone. Think about what you want to be able to do, your current level of fitness, and what you have to do to reach your goal. Then take the necessary steps to get there.
And yes, there are other things to consider such as the thoracic spine and hips.
