@erice360 joined my for our yearly fall Erie trip. It was a cold, damp, overcast day but we managed to avoid the rain. We went through a lull in the action around mid-day but was able to book-end the day several hours of steady bites from fat fall Lake Erie smallmouth! Our most productive presentation was a dropshot with a Big D in new color from @lurecraft called Smallmouth Snot...they ate it up!
Dropshot tackle: @dobynsrods Sierra Series 702 spinning rod, @lews_fishing Pro Speed Spin reel, and 15lb P-line TCB-8 braid with a 10lb Tactical fluorocarbon leader.

Huge thanks to Jennifer Wilbur and her son Jarrod for supporting Lawrence Tech fishing! They won the LTU Fishing Club raffle last year for a free guide trip with me and we were finally able to get them out on the lake after finding spots in our busy schedules. Both showed up to the dock with their Costa sunglasses, ready to fish! The Ned rig dominated! Because of the windy conditions we had to step up to a Dobyns Fury 702 rod with the 3/16 weight. This was the very rod won in the contest! Had a great time guys and thanks for supporting our college team! #dobynsdifference#ltufishing#highschoolfishing#collegebass @dobynsrods @lews_fishing @costabassfishing @costasunglasses @plinefishing @ltufish @lawrencetechu #lawrencetech#lawrencetech
The sun came out and the smalllies were chewing! Mitch and his son Ty joined me for a trip on Sunday. As with Saturday, we caught fish from 14 up to 6 feet. We caught them many different ways, including bed fishing. With the east wind, the water was slightly more stirred up which made our @costasunglasses that much more critical to our success in seeing the fish. Ty was making the two adults look silly in the first couple of hours with several heavy catches. Dad came back though late in the day with some great catches of his own. Always great to have parents taking their kids out! Here was our most productive setup: - @dobynsrods Fury 702 spinning rod
- @lews_fishing Mach II spinning reel
- 15lb @plinefishing TCB-8 braid with an 8lb P-line Tactical fluorocarbon leader
Also picked off a few on a soft jerkbait with a Dobyns Champion 705 casting rod, Team Lews Lite Speed Spool, and 15lb P-line Tacticsl fluorocarbon. There are few more fun ways to fish than with that setup in my humble opinion! #dobynsrods#seewhatsoutthere#guidetrip#lakestclair#dobynsdifference#lews#lewsreels#pline#plinetactical#bedfishing#marcelsguideservice#ryansaidfishing#costasunglasses#costabassfishing#stclairsmallmouth#smallmouthbass#dropshot
For late October there were a ton of boats out on the lake today. Loving that climate change I guess haha! Hit the water with friend and client @erice360 . Smallmouth never cease to amaze. We caught the bulk of our fish in a 200 foot span...in the middle of a 40+ square mile lake in 3 foot waves. We tried expanding on our area, but that 200 feet was key. I found the area yesterday with my dad (bonus shot of Fred included) and all they seemed to want was a tube, but Sunday it was all about the dropshot with a few on a swimbait. I got it handed to me by Eric with the dropshot! Dropshot was fished on a @dobynsrods Fury 702 spinning rod with a @lews_fishing Mach II spinning reel and 15lb @plinefishing TCB 8-carrier braid with an 8lb Tactical fluorocarbon leader. Every time we would make a pass we would get one or two. Took persistence on our part fishing rocky waters in a small area but we made it work and were rewarded with some beautiful fish! More to come on the swimbait setup in the off season....stay tuned! #lews#pline#lewsreels#dobynsdifference#dobynsrods#pline#stclairsmallmouth#ryansaidfishing#marcelsguideservice
St Clair has been a little stingy with numbers lately (at least where I have been fishing) but the size is definitely not lacking! The fish looked like they've been on a steady diet of beer and pizza! Spike and Leslie traveled from Texas to Detroit for a work event and decided to book a trip. Spike is an accomplished angler from Texas, recently having some very high finishes on the Bass Champs tour including an angler of the year title. Most of our fish were caught on a @dobynsrods Champion series 764 CB crank bait rod…the very best deep crankbait rod out there in my humble opinion. We paired it with a @lews_fishing Tournament MB 5.4:1 gear ratio reel and 15lb @plinefishing Tactical fluorocarbon. With the slightly stained water, we could throw the 15lb line with no problem it was nice to have that added extra assurance. We also added a few fish by throwing a drop shot in the direction where we missed a crank bait bite, including our biggest of the day. The drop shot fish came on a Dobyns Fury Series 702 spinning rod with a Lews Mach II spinning reel. It was also a multi species day… we caught large walleye, pike, sheephead, and catfish. #lews#pline#lewsreels#dobynsdifference#dobynsrods#ryansaidfishing#stclairsmallmouth#marcelsguideservice
A trio of mountaineers came up from West Virginia to try their hand at Great Lakes smallmouth fishing. Brett, Matthew, and Josh have a lot of experience fishing for smallmouth in the rivers of West Virginia but had heard about our fat little meatball smallmouth up here and wanted to give it a shot. Aside from one near (hilarious) "man overboard" incident we had a good day! The morning started off pretty quickly with several good smallmouth, a good musky, and a 5lb catfish. Things slowed down for a couple of hours but picked back up in the afternoon. We ended in an area that I had not fished in two months but suspected it might be good with the cooling water and it was...while we did not catch as many numbers as I would've liked our best five top 23 pounds! There was lots of trash talking but all three guys managed to catch their personal best smallmouth. Thanks for coming up guys! Almost all of our fish were caught on drop shot with a @dobynsrods Fury 702 spinning rod and a @lews_fishing Mach II spinning reel. We spooled up with 15lb @plinefishing 8-carrier TCB with a 10lb leader of P-line Tactical fluorocarbon. Like the tournament I fished yesterday though, our biggest fish came on a crankbait (love it!). I was using a Dobyn Fury 705 CB with my favorite crank (more info coming on that when it gets too cold to fish). The Dobyns Champion 764 CB and the Fury 705 CB handle 95% of my crankbaiting duties.
Looking forward to getting back out there soon! #stclairsmallmouth#ryansaidfishing#marcelsguideservice#dobynsrods#dobynsdifference#lews#lewsreels#pline#puremichigan#crankbaitaddiction
Typical calculations for a 19" smallmouth bass with a 14" girth put them at about 3.5lbs...but on St Clair the rules do not hold! Kevin caught us a 4lb 5oz beast with these dimensions....a full 3/4lb bigger than normal. On St Clair the combination of current and an abundant food source produces thick fish! Dan, Kevin, Ben, and Jake came all the way from Missouri to sample St Clair smallmouth fishing in a two boat trip with @m_fischer916. Dan and Kevin have been friends since high school which is super cool to see. The weather threatened at the beginning of the day but then treated us to a nice time on the water. The dropshot accounted for nearly every fish we caught. Caught them all on a @dobynsrods Fury Series 702 spinning rod, a @lews_fishing Mach II spinning reel, and 15lb @plinefishing 8-carrier TCB braid with an 8lb Tactical fluorocarbon leader. A @lurecraft Big D was on the business end...in the off season I will talk more about my dropshot setup and an important lesson I learned this year from @chad_pipkens ...never get to the point where you have it all figured out! Great job today guys! #stclairsmallmouth#pline#lews#dobynsrods#dobynsdifference#marcelsguideservice#ryansaidfishing#lurecraft
Some pretty cool parents got Mason and Will a guided trip out on St. Clair today! These two young men are avid fisherman and did a great job out on the lake reeling in chunky smallmouth! We started the day in relatively shallow water, 10 to 11 feet, and ended the day out in deeper water, 16 to 18 feet. We had faster action in the shallower water with current related fish, but some of our better fish came a little bit deeper. It seemed like the swim bait was better up shallow, but the dropshot and crankbait shined out deep. We used the usual spinning rod combination for both drop shot and small swimbait, but I tried a slightly larger swim bait with my @dobynsrods champion 764C Rod, @lews_fishing SLP casting reel, and 15 pound @plinefishing tactical fluorocarbon. As I mentioned last time I'll talk more about my swim bait set ups in the fall but that Rod gets a great hook into those fish even on a really long cast. Our biggest fish of the day was a 4-10 caught on that set up with only five minutes to go! Thanks for sharing the boat today Mason and Will… You guys did a great job and never stop fishing! #marcelsguideservice#ryansaidfishing#dobynsdifference#dobynsrods#lews#lewsreels#pline#stclairsmallmouth
