Sometimes a cover has the power of to pull you in right away.
I saw this at Kinokuniya Bookstore and I wanted to buy it so bad. On a mini-book ban for a bit - so this will have to wait. Do any non-US books have your eye at the moment?

Finished this very moving novel on my morning bus ride earlier today. Can't stop thinking about mothers and grandmothers, especially my own! Ignore the socioculturally tone-deaf review from #npr back in #2011 Yes, it's an emotional, tear-filled story, but that doesn't negate this novel's vivid structure and universal appeal.

Ilustrado by Miguel Syjuco (Penguin Random Hous, 2010) is built like a carousel, revolving between first- and third-person commentary, news reports, interviews, extracts from Salvador’s work and a Crispin Salvador biography the narrator is writing. It is all held tightly together, focused on the returning son’s difficulties with his family and his efforts to acclimatize. Manila is conjured as a dystopian black hole. Civil unrest crackles at the edge of the narrator’s vision as he explores the metropolis, reaching critical mass when a typhoon hits the city near the novel’s climax. Syjuco received the 2008 Man Asian Literary Prize and the Philippines’ highest literary honor, the Palanca Award, for Ilustrado.

Então este book é pra vc, my friend.

Island of a Thousand Mirrors (Hachette, 2013), Nayomi Munaweera’s debut novel, is a haunting tale of lives distorted by terrible violence. It chronicles how two girls — one Sinhala, the other Tamil — cope with the long and brutal civil war in Sri Lanka, how they navigate their histories, sibling rivalries and adolescent heartbreaks, the burdens of exile and belonging and the harsh demands of survival.
It won the Regional Award for the Commonwealth Book Prize in 2013. It was also nominated for Man Asian Literary Prize, longlisted for the International DUBLIN Literary Award and shortlisted for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature.
Munaweera's second novel, What Lies Between Us, (Pan Macmillan India, 2016), is an immensely haunting and heartbreakingly beautiful story about mothers and daughters, about secrets and lies, and the things we do to protect those we love.

The Sly Company of People Who (2011), the mesmerising novel by Rahul Bhattacharya, is a wonderful blend of heady adventures, the restlessness of youth, and the paradoxes of searching for life’s meaning in the escape from home. Brimming with charm and intelligence, it is the story of a twenty-six-year-old Indian journalist who decides to give up his job and travel to Guyana, a "forgotten colonial society of raw, mesmerizing beauty". Seduced by the country and captivated by the feisty yet fragile Jan, the two embark on an adventure that changes their lives.
The winner of The Hindu Literary Prize and shortlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2011, it also won the Ondaatje Prize in 2012.
Bhattacharya, a cricket journalist since 2000, has been writing for the Wisden Almanack since 2003. His other book includes Pundits from Pakistan: On Tour with India, 2003-04.

Out of all the books I've read, this book is likely the one I've gifted the most. The writing is really incredible, offering humour and insight in the midst of a river of depth. A lot goes on in this story, a lot of determination to uncover lost truths, and, as described by The New Yorker on the back cover, the story "begins as a murder mystery and develops into an ambitious exploration of cultural identity, ambition, and artistic purpose." I tagged the post as Can Lit because Syjuco currently lives in Montreal, but a more accurate tag would be #FilipinoLit seeing as how he was born and raised in Manila. I'm not too familiar with Filipino literature or writers, but if I had to, I'd definitely suggest starting with Syjuco. But regardless of authorial origins, this book is a must for anyone jonesing for a good story to get lost in. Still, if any of you have tips on any Filipino writers I should check out, please let me know!

(Kyung Sook Shin)

Now reading #Ilustrado by #MiguelSyjuco a home grown talent the #Philippines must be very proud of. Winner of #ManAsianLiteraryPrize in 2008. I brought this book in July 2010 and never got the chance of finishing it when I got so busy with smart phones and touch screen gadgets. This book is a pool of words and I mean hard, difficult to fathom words - you'll find need for dictionary for this #novel. It's #political #satire type of sort evolving Crispin Salvador and his sudden death.
