#minibookhaul from about a two and a half weeks ago before moving. 😂
·
🌼 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter' by Carson McCullers
- This is a replacement of the tattered copy I had. It explores loneliness and human connections like no other book I've read before. It remains one of my all-time favorite books.
🌼 'The Door' by Magda Szabo
-The story follows the relationship between Magda--an educated, well-to-do woman--and Emerence--a peasant. It explores love and societal class.
🌼 'We' by Yevgeny Zamyatin
-A dystopian novel that explores what would happen if every single thing in life was calculated, and what would it be like if individuals were stripped of their human instincts and desires.
·
·
Any of these on your TBR list? Have you read any of them?
·
·
On another note, my husband and I are still in the process of organizing our home. Due to the fact that we have a LOT of books, our old bookshelves had to be replaced. Until the new shelves arrive, all our books are stacked in piles all over the living room floor. 😶 #bookloverproblems Hence why I haven't been posting many new book reviews.

Li avete letti?
.
🇬🇧🇺🇸
Some time ago I bought these 2 secondhand books (#spinebenders hello ❤️) because I'm a damn collector and just can't help it
.
@literary.libations I'm pretty sure I saw this same Faulkner in your collection, so... 🤣😂

Mini Sabra brought home a visiting friend from Hungary. They are reading and discussing a book, The Door, by Magda Szabo. She is a well known Hungarian author. This book is set in the area around Budapest. After visiting Hungary she and Sutu want to learn more about it through this authors expression. #magdaszabo #hungary #minimesaroundtheworld

✒️Bir sonraki kitap ile görüşmek üzere.

I really enjoyed it, I don't know how much I can say about it without spoiling it - so this might be an elusive review.
The book started with an Ali Smith introduction, which I was excited about. It was interesting what Smith wrote about, because she included the statistics that inspired #myyearoftranslation , which is, that only 3% of books published in English speaking countries are translated.
This book reads like a mystery ( I think, I've never really read a mystery). I felt very uncomfortable at times while reading this, and I found certain scenes seriously distressing.
This book works you in ways that fuck with your head, you don't know where it's going - and when you know, you think - oh shit (dare I say, literally).
Reading this book only strengthened my fear of old people ( I know, not nice).
I wish I could say more... but I really don't think I can. I don't know if I'm the only person who didn't know where this book was going and was mildly (deeply) disturbed... but it was a good book!

Magda Szabo’s “Iza’s Ballad” was my Hungarian pick for my Read the World challenge. The novel, which was written in 1963 and concerns the relationship between Iza and her mother, whom Iza brings to live with her in the city following her father’s death. It’s not only the push-pull between mother and daughter explored but also that between urban/rural, young/old and modernity/stagnation. Szabo is absolutely a writer I’ll return to.

July has so far been a great month of reading for me!
I usually only read three to four books a month, but I've already read three and it's just the middle of the month, and they've all been great!
I went from Iraq to Hungary to Japan with these books, and right now I'm reading an Argentinean author. It's also been a month of female authors!
I chose my current read Land of Smoke by Sara Gallardo because I thought it would be slower read for me, it's a collection of short stories, and she writes magic realism. I started it yesterday, and I'm enjoying it! I look forward to reading more of her stories!
I'll be writing reviews for these three very good books in the next few days!

Two lovely bibliophiles - Ichizu (@but_i_thought) and Bella (@the_book_imp) - sent the #midyearbookfreakouttag my way, so here we go: 📚 Best book read so far in 2018: I've read 95 books so far and I simply cannot choose only one. So, on the fiction side: The Door by Magda Szabo, The Makioka Sisters & Some Prefer Nettles by Junichiro Tanizaki, Season of Migration to the North by Tayeb Salih, Contempt by Alberto Moravia, Too Loud a Solitude by Bohumil Hrabal. On the nonfiction side: Travels with Herodotus by R. Kapuscinski & On Being Blue by William H. Gass 📚New release you haven’t read yet, but want to: Crudo by Olivia Laing & The Overstory by R. Powers 📚Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: None that I know of but a new Ali Smith would be a joy. 📚Biggest disappointment: Poem Strip by Dino Buzzati, The Silence and The Roar by Nihad Sirees 📚Biggest surprise: Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively and some debut novels: Asymmetry by Lisa Halliday, Faces in The Crowd by Valeria Luiselli, Sight by Jesse Greengrass 📚Favourite new author: All those whose work ended up in the best books of 2018. 📚Saddest book you've read: Most of those I truly loved. I seem to agree with Vonnegut's dictum that “all great literature is all about what a bummer it is to be a human being".
.
📚A book that made you happy: Nonrequired Reading by Wislawa Szymborska, Silas Marner, Cantatrix Sopranica by G. Perec 📚Favourite book to film adaptation you saw this year: I haven't seen any. 📚Favourite review you’ve written this year: I'm not sure favourite is the right word, but the post on Lolita was important to me. I get emotionally involved when writing reviews and even more so when I truly love the book. So, in terms of attachment, the reviews for the year's favourite books score high. 📚Books to read before the end of the year: The Emperor's Tomb by Joseph Roth, The Gate, Speedboat, the works of Robert Walser.

I'd love to discover your choices too. Please consider yourself tagged if you haven't answered this already.

The Door is a remarkable book. Magda Szabó was a recent discovery (for me). • Published decades ago, the English translation appeared here just last year. • Two Hungarian writers employ a local woman to run their household. She is a formidable character who embodies and illustrates 20th century Hungarian class clashes, history, attitudes, politics, traditions, prejudices, aging, morality ... utterly fascinating. • Interesting if read as a superficial tale; riveting if more closely examined. I will long remember Emerence. • The Door was deeply satisfying. • It could be a terrific book club choice — perhaps an imagination challenge after lighter fare. • If you read, give a shout.

🌸„What a lonely place it would be to have a world without a wildflower!“🌸

My cousins are visiting for the weekend and they wanted to visit the Body Exhibition that my father and I were not interested in so we spent the day walking around Andrássy Road and its surroundings. It was wonderful, this part of the city is extremely gorgeous and we also went down on side roads that I don’t go to alone and found so many new pretty buildings.
.
Yesterday I started reading a Hungarian classic called Pacsirta (it has an English translation, it’s called Slylark) by Dezső Kosztolányi. It’s only 170 pages long and I’m almost finished with it. I love it so much! I would even risk saying that it’s better than his other novel, Anna Édes. I’m going to post a review tomorrow.

•
Che cosa ne pensate? Vi incuriosisce? Io ho sentito meraviglie su questa scrittrice!

This is my last picture from Debrecen. We were there last week but it feels like it’s been ages. 🙊 I think it might be because we’ve been travelling a lot around the country lately so now I have a lot of memories from the past few days.
.
Today, we got to Tihany and Balatonfüred at last! A few days ago we already started our trip here but got lost on the highway and ended up in another town (that we wanted to see anyway so it was fine) but this time we actually got to visit these towns!
.
It was very nice. The last time I was here was on a class trip about three years ago but there were still sights that I wanted to see, for example the manor of one of my favourite Hungarian writer, Mór Jókai. It was amazing! They organised it so well. If I hadn’t known what it was, I would have sworn that someone actually lives in the house. This was also where he wrote my favourite book by him, Tímár’s Two Worlds/The Man With The Golden Touch.
.
By the way, that statue is of Abigél. It’s near the entrance to the Magda Szabó Memorial House (I’m sitting on its steps) and it’s related to the novel I’m holding. In the book, it’s a statue in the garden of the school where it’s set and it miraculously helps the students with their problems. They just have to write down what they have trouble with and put the paper into its pitcher.
.
QOTD: Have you ever visited a memorial house for a writer you like?

I'm trying to decide what to read next!
I haven't read an NYRB recently for #myyearoftranslation , so I thought I'd pick one up. I've read good reviews for both of these in the past little while. They are both by Hungarian authors and I don't believe I've ever read a Hungarian writer before!
Which do you vote for? I think I am leaning towards The Door!

Je me suis ennuyée!
Long et monotone..

This is the statue of the writer whose house I visited in Debrecen a few days ago, Magda Szabó. It was elected in last October for the 100th anniversary of her birth and I think it’s gorgeous. The arms of the bench are small cat statues because she loved them and she also has books under her hands. I think it captured her perfectly.

🌻„A man who has been through bitter experiences and travelled far enjoys even his sufferings after a time“ – Homer, The Odyssey🌻
.
This book I’m holding on the photo is titled after a quote from The Odyssey but I couldn’t find it anywhere in English so I just chose another. 🙊 I’m also holding it in such a weird way on the first picture, my hand looks like a Disney villain’s!
.
Today we finally left my grandmother’s house and arrived home but tomorrow we are leaving again already. We are going to Tihany and Balatonfüred. After that we will go on one-day trips only for a while because the other towns we are planning on visiting this week are only around an hour drive from our town. ✨
.
I’m about halfway through How To Find Love In A Bookshop and it’s so good! I’m also reading the book on the picture, On Zeus’ Porch by Magda Szabó. It’s about her first trip to Greece. Her style is enjoyable as always and it got to the fun part quite quickly. 🌻

🌻„The sunflower is mine, in a way.“ – Vincent Van Gogh🌻
.
I’m not sure if I have mentioned it before but sunflowers are my favourite flowers and they had been for a long time. I love any and every kind of plants, actually but for some reason sunflowers were always special. When we are travelling during the summer, the side of the motorway has countless sunflower fields. The countryside you can see from the motorway is stunning during the summer anyway but these are my favourite parts.
.
For a while, I will probably mostly post photos of books by Magda Szabó because she is the only author I brought with myself, since I visited sights related to her life but I will talk about different books as well. 🙊

It is truly capturing and mesmerizing. Focusing on the messy relationship between an old mother and her 36-year-old daughter, the book managed to shove my own defects and my lack of empathy towards my parents in my face! Szabo is a true gem. I am really sorry that there are only a few books of hers left to read 😔
Managed a quick jaunt through #Budapest in September last year, where I discovered the many wonders of the twin city. But most importantly, I discovered #MagdaSzabo and her wonderful writing. Wrote a piece about exactly this for @forbesindia Link in profile, but also here>> http://www.forbesindia.com/article/recliner/budapest-a-city-that-straddles-the-old-and-new/50481/1

So glad to have discovered the most translated Hungarian author Magda Szabo who has had her work translated in 42 publications across 30 countries. My Book 11 of 2018 is her most well known work THE DOOR translated by Len Rix.

Written in 1987 and translated only recently, in terms of the story there is nothing more than a relationship between a budding author(also named Magda) and her househelp Emerence which develops into more than a employer-employee relationship. Beautiful storytelling and plot development are the main characteristics of this novel. The last 30% of the book is so touching that you will be amazed by her power of writing and the emotions it evoke. The translation of the work does equal justice too.

This book is partly autobiographical since Magda was also married to a writer in real life as in the book and did win some prestigious awards. There is also a mention of freezing of Magda's writing career during the Communist movement in Hungary which was indeed characteristic of her own life.
As the story develops, you will realise how each woman is strong yet dependent on the other and how their lives interweave with one another. The storytelling ability of the author is tremendously praiseworthy. The translation is equally amazing and it won the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize. Now to seek more of Magda and Len Rix's work. This was a 5/5 for me.
