(wikipedia)
Messier 45 - M45 - Pleiades - Seven Sisters
The Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters and Messier 45, are an open star cluster containing middle-aged, hot B-type stars located in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest star clusters to Earth and is the cluster most obvious to the naked eye in the night sky.
The cluster is dominated by hot blue and luminous stars that have formed within the last 100 million years. A faint reflection nebulosity around the brightest stars was thought at first to be left over from the formation of the cluster (hence the alternative name Maia Nebula after the star Maia), but is now likely an unrelated foreground dust cloud in the interstellar medium, through which the stars are currently passing. My first post in a loooong time isn't even about the Sun (directly. . . though it is related)
What do you do when your youngest is named Maia . . . ?✨
Paint a glow in the dark mural of M45 (and 2000+ accompanying field stars) on her wall of course! Approx. 5' X 4' using paint and powders from @technoglow and glow star decals. A few liberties were taken with respect to occasional magnitude variations, as blobs of paint tend to blob, but every star is pretty much exactly to scale. I learned that the colloidal nature of glow paint makes it really hard to apply and it's virtually impossible to see where you're putting it. Sunlight entering from the opposite window, is chemically converted and stored in the #photoluminescent media, to be slowly emitted over time. . . it's kinda #heliophysics .☀️
According to those really old Greek guys Maia was the eldest of the Pleiades, mother of Hermes (who invented the lyre).
This is M45, better known as The Pleiades or The Seven Sisters. It is an open cluster of stars in the constellation of Taurus and is about 440 light years away from earth. The blue nebulosity is thought to be interstellar dust that the cluster is currently moving through, not the left over gas from the formation of the stars, as previously thought.
Greek mythology says that the cluster was formed when seven sister were out walking in the woods and came cross the hunter Orion. Orion fell in love with the sisters and began to pursue them, but the sister were not interested, so ran from him. After years of running from Orion, Zues, who felt sorry for the sisters, turned them into doves and they flew up to the heavens and became the stars we see. In a cruel twist Orion also turned to stars and continues to pursue the sisters across the night sky. Sounds plausible to me, that happens all the time 😝
Another interesting fact is that the Subaru logo is based on this cluster of stars, cool hey 😎
I took this image on the 18th of November this year, but didn't bother to process it because I wasn't happy with the quality of the data. With all this bad weather we have been having in the UK, I have had no opportunity to try shooting it again so though I would attempt processing it anyway. I think it turned out OK in the end, especially as it consists of 30second subs, longer subs would have bought out the blue nebulosity a lot more
The image was taken using my Canon 700D attached to the Orion ED80T CF on a Sky-watcher Star Adventure tracking mount. In total the combined exposure time was 2.5hrs.
Thanks for reading and I hope you like the image
’Swedish Soldier with K-pist m/45’ —————————————
The Swedish K or as some call it “ärtbössa” is a SMG chambered in 9mm was used in the Swedish military from 1945 to 2007. The SMG was mostly used as a backup weapon for people behind the front lines, as m1 carbines during ww2, for an example radiomen(singnalister) would use is as my father did during his time. The Swedish K was even adopted by US special forces during the Vietnam war but when the us officially entered the war Sweden stopped selling do to law so S&W copied the gun as S&W mod 76 and was a favorite among the special forces before the commando variant of the m16 came(I believe)
