ROOT TO RISE. What a cliché, right? Yes yes, be straight, I’ve thought. But at yesterdays Anatomy workshop something fell into place and clicked. I finally got the point. Which is kind of absurd after x amount of years of doing yoga, to not really have understood something this basic. Push down to rise up. Utilize the force of gravity to counteract it and stabilize yourself.
Duu-uh, you might think. Sure, but it took this long for me to actually get it. And this is what makes yoga so cool. You’re always the student. You never know what new and exciting aspect about your own practice and your own process you will learn today or tomorrow.
And, oh yeah, did I mention the fricking awesome sequoia tree in the picture? Talk about rooting to rise..! 😻👌🏼

⬆️⬆️⬆️ [1st pic TODAY] [2nd pic 2016] [3rd pic Oct 2018] Starting to see the changes in my body that I’ve always wanted, and feeling so strong 😊
Prior to this period of my life I’ve been scared to “bulk” because I’ve always seen myself as “bigger” and carried more fat than I felt was acceptable. My mindset was a residual effect of my chunky childhood/teen years. Until recently I never realized that my problem was not the foods that I was eating, but the way in which I was consuming them.••••••••
My name is Shelby Swanson and I am a recovering binge eater 🙋🏼♀️😂...(But In all seriousness) The past few years I’ve learned to nourish my body with whole healthy foods that fuel me and provide me with lots of micronutrients! (As you can see from my stories I am OBSESSED with food and I find it to be both an artistic expression and fun to create 💁🏼♀️) But despite having a nutritious diet I still wasn’t looking the way I wanted to or feeling confident in my body.•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
The truth of the matter is that although I was eating regular portions of mostly fruits, veggies, meat, and good carbs through out the week, there were 3-4 times a week where I would binge. I’m not talking eating a whole bag of chips. I’m talking eating a whole bag of chips, plus a PB&J, plus 2 frozen waffles, a bowl of cereal, and anything else I had lying around 🤷🏼♀️ The side affects of this type of eating pattern caused me to honestly swell up and feel bloated all the time! You can even see it in my face [SWIPE LEFT]•••••••
Until the past 12 months I would have never dreamed of doing a “bulk” because my whole life I’ve always felt bulky. I honestly think bulk is such a silly word for it anyways. I want to put on MUSCLE 💪🏼 I’m in a HYPERTROPHIC phase of my training 🤘🏼 sounds much better right?••••••••••••••••••••••••••
I can honestly say over the past 12 months I have kicked bing eating in the butt and it no longer haunts me late at night 😅 So far my lil bulk has been successful, so freaking fun, and my tummy remains flat because I’m not stuffing my face with food anymore 🙃 I don’t feel like I’m BULKING, I feel like I’m SHAPING my body 💅🏼

This is the best orange juice yet🍊🧡
Lately I haven’t been posting many pictures of myself because I was embarrassed about gaining 30lbs in a year. I had replaced all the addictions in my life with food, I’ve been stressed and using sweets as a means to make myself feel better emotionally. And we’re talking like a pint of salt and straw every other day and the people at Popeyes knew my name 🤦🏾♀️. I gave up on trying to be my best fit self because I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. Now I’ve been dealing with guilt because none of my clothes fit.
But I have to get past that. I am starting over. Eating better, focusing on stretching, practicing my form. It’s been three weeks of muscle building and now it’s time to transition into strength training. Deads have always been challenging for me because of my long legs and tight hips, but my form is getting a lot better and I’m feeling muscles wake up that have been sleeping for a long time. Today I praise myself with: Be patient with yourself Makeda, you’ll get there. You’ve lost 100lbs before, 20 to 30lbs will be a breeze!
happiest of birthdays to the love + light planted right in the middle of 30! ✨ I know this next trip around the sun is all yours, kenz! love you to pieces 💞

This quote should drill in the importance of self care. I created a visual based on food to better explain. 😜
I am picturing a chef making a huge pot of chili. On monday the pot of soup tastes amazing. It’s fresh, and the chef too their time adding all the spices and stirring it slowly with love. Everyone loves the chili and the pot feeds 100 people.
The chef does the same thing on Tuesday and Wednesday. Again feeding about 100 people and everyone loves it!
By Wednesday night the chef is feeling tired. Their feet hurt, their back aches and they are exhausted. The chef doesn’t feel like prepping for Thursday and decides instead of fresh ingredients from the morning market they will just buy from the grocery store. The chili is made, it tastes good but it’s not amazing. The customers don’t love it as much and realize it wasn’t the same. Not as many people come to eat the chili.
By Friday the chef is completely exhausted and doesn’t feel like going to the store at all. They decide they will make chili from whatever is at the restaurant. The chili pot is only half full because there were not enough leftover ingredients for a full pot. The chef rushes making the chili so that they can sell it quickly so they could go home. The customers can feel that it’s not the same. They can tell it was rushed and that they were not given the same time and energy as when they came on Monday. The chef is tired and the evidence of burnout is right there in the chili.
People can tell when you aren’t giving them your full attention. People can tell when you aren’t yourself. You can tell when you aren’t feeling up to doing activities you normally would be excited about. You can feel resentful for people not understanding why you are too tired to go out, or why you aren’t giving them the same attention they are giving you.
Self care helps you be able to recharge and give the best version of you. Burn out takes away a little bit of you, your energy, and what makes you you every time you don’t recharge. & you only have so much energy before it turns negative.
I hope this chili visual helps bring more awareness of the importance of self care. ❤️
Booty, Quads, and Hamstrings Oh My! Filmed Thursday, these are some 🔥 moves to get all the things burnin’!
1️⃣Barbell Squats (I’ve been under the weather so push it too hard and just did 5 reps for reference of what’s to come for tomorrow)
2️⃣B-stance Squats (must try omg was so sore from these, among other exercises, on Tuesday that I couldn’t run on Wednesday! I get a really good Glute connection throughout the whole movement and can feel a nice hamstring stretch on the way down and can feel my quads on the way up! About 70% of the weight is on your flat foot and about 30% on your toes on the ground and heel elevated foot)
3️⃣Hamstrings (bilateral) curls on the sliding row machine (these made me so sore from Wednesday’s part 2️⃣ workout I had to do Booty accessory work Thursday because Tuesdays and half of Wednesday’s workout destroyed my Booty and Legs!)
4️⃣Hamstring (unilateral) curls on the sliding row machine (I swear I can make up a whole full body workout just for that machine!)
Like, share, and save for your next Booty and Leg day!
Tomorrow I will be filming some sort of Booty and Leg workout and an Upper body workout! Still also need to edit and post the partner workout @emilytrowe and I did, it’s a fun one!

Figured you guys were sick of seeing squats, deadlifts, & bench everyday so here I am trying a bunch of new things 🎉🎊
Had to go home from school early because of an unexpected incident, so yesterday was an unplanned rest day, but I’m back and better💪🏻
So proud of myself for trying new things especially adding the 10lb weight to my pull ups and the monkey bars 🐒
I 💯% recommend trying something new at least once a week, especially in training 🏋️♀️
‘Bring your attention to your heart. Everything is within’. -Sri Dharma Mittra
