In my mind Kylo Ren is the main protagonist of the sequels. He has real character development, facing true conflicts and obstacles. Unlike Rey, Kylo Ren has many layers as a character and is relatable to a large extent.
What do you guys think of Kylo Ren?
Solo: A Star Wars Story “First, in my experience, where viewers gave up to sit on their phones”
Despite mixed reviews, average IMDb and Metacritc ratings, Ron Howard directs an enjoyable episode in the Star Wars anthology series. At times, the editing is quick and pacier than Rogue One; featuring an original and classic score with attempts of good writing. Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover gleam, while Phoebe Waller-Bridge gives us another memorable droid. The building blocks are there for yet another Star Wars story and I imagine Kathleen Kennedy has already put a team together to start it.
The comedy falls in some places and there is an SJW rhetoric running beneath the heart-warming surface, but I for one am merely paying the film lip service. Though I enjoyed it, I couldn’t help but wonder why the hell I was watching it. In one of Ben Shaprio’s rants from April, he makes a solid point that the film is meaningless. In Star Wars (or a New Hope), Han leaves because he isn’t “the good guy” but returns despite our assumptions of him, to do the right thing, saving Luke from Vader and destroying the Death Star at the end. His whole point in the film, transitioning from anti-hero to hero, fulfils a narrative arc which Ehrenreich simply can’t. In theory, Ehrenreich should be an absolute bastard in proportion – which he just isn’t. Though his Han thinks he’s done some “terrible things” – by going on a suicide mission to save his love, rescuing Chewbacca (a slave of the Empire) and starting a rebellion on a mining planet and freeing the slave race who inhabit it – these things aren’t “terrible” nor questionable, and while watching the film I realised they needed to tweak our point-of-view to blur that line.
As much as my younger self hates me for saying this, I am now starting to get SICK of Star Wars. Kathleen Kennedy, a Producer who has given us some of the best films of the century, is completely on the wrong path. Just give the fans what they want, an Obi-Wan film, round off the Sequel trilogy, and be done with it. Star Wars is a cash cow and thus far being milked soulessly – don’t ruin a loved franchise, please.
