Grey but humid day at Trinity Buoy Wharf but a splendid #mudlarking morning with some nice finds.
This area was hugely important in the ship building industry from 1803-1987 employing hundreds of engineers, platers, riveters, smiths, carpenters, painters, chain testers & office staff. It also has the last remaining lighthouse on the river in London upstream of the Thames Barrier. Michael Faraday worked here experimenting & inventing a way of clearing residual gases produced by the huge oil lighthouse lamps, often obscuring the light rays. There’s no doubt that Faraday’s experiments helped save the lives of many who worked/travelled on ships & boats on the river & out at sea.
Today’s finds include grape shot, musket ball & a clay marble (too light to be a musket ball); a brass button; brass Port Lock key; WW2 bullets (both spent) a legacy of the Blitz and the huge damage done to this area by the Luftwaffe.
The strangest find of the day was two clipped halves of a French coin. I found one half walking one way along the foreshore &, on my way back as the tide was on the turn, I found the other half on another part of the foreshore. What are the chances of that? Perhaps both halves belonged to lovers long since gone 💔
Sadly I didn’t find any pottery with the East India Company logo this time (it’s in my top three of ‘things-I’d-love-to-find-on-a-Mudlark’) but maybe next time. I live in hope...
If you’re thinking of mudlarking here I advise waiting for a low tide that’s at least 0.50m or lower. It’s a narrow stretch of foreshore & the tide comes in VERY quickly. Once peak low tide has been and gone you have approx 45 mins to make sure you’re back at the steps leading off the foreshore & back up onto the Embankment.
