The band drops into “Dark Star" like gentle snowflakes falling from the frigid winter sky in Buffalo. Playing “Dark Star” and “The Other One” in the same show is rare for ANY year. My friend, Rick Koh, who was a student at SUNY Buffalo at the time, was one of the lucky ones in attendance that evening and he considers this show one of his favorites. That is saying a lot b/c he saw Cornell (5/8/77) and Englishtown (9/3/77). During the second set, Rick made his way down to the second row aisle where he had an epiphany that Phil wanted to play "Dark Star" and needed Rick to yell it at him. Rick complied with Phil's order and the band played "Dark Star." Read all about it in this month's edition of Liner Notes Music Blog, which was authored by @jafreitag (link in my profile). #epiphany #itmusthavebeenthedoses #darkstar #01201979 #gratefuldead #sheastheater #buffalo #jerrygarcia #bobweir #phillesh #billkreutzmann #mickeyhart #keithgodchaux #31daysofdead #linernotesmusicblog

Dancin’ In The Streets - 1/12/79 – The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA (Posted 12/8/17)
Talk about under the radar! Maybe it’s the audience source? Maybe it’s the set list? Maybe it was the roses…or the doses? Whatever the case, this 25-minute, uber-jammed out version of Dancin in the Streets should be heard at all costs. Like the version from Cornell, it just goes on and on and ON! At one point the band locks into a groove that reminds me of Phish’s jamming in their legendary version of “Ghost” from July 23, 1997. From there the jam zooms into orbit. Jerry finds different patterns and locks in. At times his playing is downright hypnotic. It is relentless. He sounds like a possessed man. After the song proper ends, the band turns it over to the drummers but Jerry remains on stage! Apparently, he still has the noodle bug so he plays off the drums in a free-form style for another 7 minutes. Philadelphia PA indeed!! #dancininthestreets #jam #01121979 #thespectrum #philadelphia #gratefuldead #jerrygarcia #bobweir #phillesh #billkreutzmann #mickeyhart #keithgodchaux #donnagodchaux #31daysofdead #linernotesmusicblog

12/31/17 - BONUS MATERIAL - Iko Iko > Day-O > Women Are Smarter, Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door - 7/6/87 – Civic Arena, Pittsburgh, PA

One of the great things about a New Year’s Eve Grateful Dead concert was the possibility of a third set or at least an extended encore. Taking a page from the band’s playbook, I have followed that tradition in these projects. This year my “third set” is from the Pittsburgh Civic Arena. It was the same day that the band’s album, In The Dark was released. Did the band do anything to promote their new album on the day of its release? Of course not! In fact, they didn’t play even one song from In The Dark that day.

This show, along with the two shows that followed in Roanoke were the only indoor arena shows during the stadium tour with Bob Dylan and they were played without Dylan. Tickets were nearly impossible to get. Man, did the band deliver the goods!

The Pittsburgh show is made extra special by the presence of the Neville Brothers who joined the Dead for most of the second set. Of the several times they collaborated together, this one is easily my favorite.

The Cajun-flavored tri-fecta sequence of “Iko > Day-O > Women” is one giant party but it is the stunning version of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” that floats out of “Space” that makes this one a keeper. During the soulful croons of the Neville’s emerges a priceless moment where Jerry lets out one very climatic, goose-bump inducing wail. Chills!
For years this show only circulated as an audience recording. In August 2017, audio guru Charlie Miller unearthed the first soundboard recording of it.

December 29 - China Doll > High Time - 4/27/84 – Providence Civic Center, Providence, RI (Posted on 12/29/17)

Back-to-back Garcia ballads. Is there anything better? It worked for the much-loved and well-known show in Richmond (11/1/85) and it does here too for this under-appreciated gem. Thanks to Jamie Goldberg for today’s request.

December 27 - Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo - 11/6/77 – Broome County Arena, Binghamton, NY (Posted on 12/27/17)

I figured I would squeeze this one in before it is officially released via the next installment of Dave’s Picks in 2018. In what is probably the best year for "Half-Step" this all-time version from the final show of the fall tour in Binghamton perhaps stands above all the rest (ok, I might like 5/7 and 9/3 just a half-step better). Here, the concluding jam is to "Half-Step" what 5/8/77 is to Morning Dew. It goes on and on, rising higher and higher. The band is uncontainable. The passion with which Garcia sings and the fierceness with which he plays is stunning. Quintessential '77.

December 26/b - China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider, Promised Land - 9/6/80 – Maine State Fairgrounds, Lewiston, ME (Posted on 12/26/17)

The Dead close a long and excellent first set with a fiery “China>Rider” followed by a bonus, all-time version of “Promised Land” at an outdoor show on a gorgeous day in Maine over Labor Day weekend. A teen-aged Steve Liesman, host of CNBC’s Squawk Box and rhythm guitar player for Grateful Dead tribute band, Stella Blues Band, attended that show and made a post on his facebook page about it: “I was down in front where the New England fans were screaming "Yankees suck." At the end of China/Rider, Phil keeps playing and Bob turns to him with a quizzical face and I saw Phil mouth "Promised Land" and Bob ran up to the mic to sing.” ALL DOWNLOAD & STREAMING LINKS ARE UPDATED IN MY PROFILE EVERY DAY.

December 25/a - She Belongs To Me - 6/15/85 – Greek Theatre, University of California, Berkeley, CA (Posted on 12/25/17)
“Christmas get her a drum.” This coveted Dylan cover song was performed just 9 times ever – all in the year of 1985 - and deserves the honor of being considered “the” song of that year. Every version the band played was a gift and I can’t think of a better selection for this day of giving. This particular performance of “She Belongs To Me” is part of a show-stealing, double-encore (rare) taken from the middle night of the Dead’s 3-show run at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley which kicked off the band’s 20-year anniversary. In this version, the passion and the intimate vulnerability with which Jerry delivers the lyrics is only surpassed by the graceful beauty of the musical interplay between he and Brent. It is a stunning performance that you wish would never end.

Day 20 - Space > St. Stephen - 10/29/77 – Evans Field House, Northern Illinois University Dekalb, IL (Posted on 12/20/17)
Any doubts about the greatness of this show can be quickly dispelled by the words of the normally stoic Phil Lesh who says after the final notes of “It Must have Been The Roses,” - “I just want you all to know out there, this is the happiest day of my life.” Phil has spoken.

As “Eyes” begins to trail off we get a rare treat. Rather than turning it over to the drummers, things get quiet and Phil emerges, plucking fat bass lines. Jerry takes notice and begins his trademark noodling, and then just like that we find ourselves blissfully lost in some reflective “Space.” This provides the perfect entry into a tour de force version of “St. Stephen.” The chords after the “One man gathers” verse are explosive. Garcia then patiently builds the jam to an exciting and powerful climax. High rockin’ energy ’77 Dead at its best.

Day 18 - The Days Between - 12/11/94 – Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, CA (Posted on 12/18/17)
Haunting, mournful, dark, tragic, spiritual. This version of “The Days Between” has it all. The outro jam is a monster filled with fury that finds Garcia going nuts with distorted fanning tremolo. In his posthumous e-mail to Jerry, titled “One Year Later,” Robert Hunter noted that Garcia sang this song like a prayer. This version definitely had the “holy on their knees.” Here is more of Hunter’s e-mail…

Obviously, faith in the underlying vision which spawned the Grateful Dead might be hard to muster for those who weren't part of the all night rap sessions circa 1960-61 ... sessions that picked up the next morning at Kepler's bookstore then headed over to the Stanford cellar or St. Mike's to continue over coffee and guitars. There were no hippies in those days and the beats had bellied up. There was only us vs. 50's consciousness. There were no jobs to be had if we wanted them. Just folk music and tremendous dreams. Yeah, we dreamed our way here. I trust it. So did you. Not so long ago we wrote a song about all that, and you sang it like a prayer. The Days Between. Last song we ever wrote.

Day 17 - Dark Star > El Paso - 8/1/73 – Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ (Posted on 12/17/17)
A magical “Dark Star” on Jerry’s birthday. The entry is slow and melty like a hot summer day. At about the 4-minute mark the band drifts away from the opening theme and transitions into an engaging, exploratory landscape of free-form interstellar jazz. The next 10 minutes are spectacular as the jam ascends to higher and higher peaks before gently landing back on home base so that Jerry can deliver the verse. Shortly thereafter, the bottom falls out and weirdness ensues. Shall we go? As Phil’s bass rumbles, Jerry plays a slide solo that is reminiscent of an old Irish folk song of sadness. This culminates with a bit of squealing feedback. Things becomes hauntingly dark and quiet before Jerry launches into a ferocious “tiger jam.” Out of the ashes of the cosmos, Weir begins strumming the chords of “El Paso.” It’s a brilliant choice. This is a manic version. Probably one of the fastest the band has ever played and Jerry is in noodle-heaven.

Day 17 - Dark Star > El Paso - 8/1/73 – Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ (Posted on 12/17/17) A magical “Dark Star” on Jerry’s birthday. Day 16 - Doin’ That Rag - 4/23/69 – The Ark, Boston, MA (Posted on 12/16/17)
“Hipsters, tripsters, real cool chicks, sir, everyone's doin' that rag.” Psychedelic ragtime at its best highlighted by passionate, story-telling Garcia vocals and an outstanding, tendril-spreading jam. This one is for @fromthelot whose love for the Dead’s legendary run at The Ark is endless.

Day 15/b - Althea, Jack Straw - 8/30/80 – The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA (Posted on 12/15/17).
You know this space is getting hot! “The hottest Althea known to man” according to Howard F. Weiner, who author’s the blog @positivelygarcia. Garcia’s last two solos are outrageous. This is followed by what he calls a “Savage Straw” to close the first set.” I agree!

Day 14/b - Cold Rain & Snow > Fire On The Mountain - 7/4/86 – Rich Stadium, Buffalo, NY (Posted on 12/14/17)
Trouble ahead, Jerry In Red. Ditching his customary black t-shirt in favor of a patriotic red one for the July Fourth holiday, Garcia delivers a heroic, star-spangled performance in the sweltering heat in Buffalo, just days before slipping into a diabetic coma. This was a long show that started in the afternoon and included Bob Dylan and Tom Petty (RIP). A film crew was on stage to capture part of the Dead’s performance for a live TV simulcast of Farm Aid II. While the film crew is scrambling to get everything "just exactly perfect" the band dives right into the second set with “Cold Rain & Snow!?” It’s a curious choice (and perhaps a cruel joke) given the extreme heat but this version totally kicks ass! In an even more exciting twist of events Garcia leads the band into a rare, stand-alone version of “Fire On The Mountain” to complete this apparent musical speedball of fire and ice. It’s the only time the two songs were combined.
