1 day, 7 divers, 500 Crown of Thorns less around Manligad Island, Linapacan, Palawan 😄
Thank you @qipalawan, Malampaya Foundation and @turtledivers_elnido and our own crew for the productive day and thanks to PCGA, @elnidoboutiqueartcafe , Ginto Island and @maremegmegbeachbar for the teamwork on getting this conservation project started.
Round two coming soon - many more in the area!
Outbreaks like these are caused by lack of natural predators due to overfishing, pollution and warming waters. COTs usually have a controlling function in the fragile ecosystem of the reef, but when imbalanced, they turn into dreaded pests that devour their body size in coral polyps every night.
We inject pure household vinegar as centrally as possible and with a slight angle to ensure that the vinegar goes where it's supposed to. We will add food coloring next time to monitor the injecting better.
This method is quick and easy for divers - even for those COTs in hard to reach areas where removal may have caused stress spawning or coral damage.
We will also make an effort to return and monitor the reefs we have worked on using the vinegar method to ensure its effectivity
