O modelo positivo do controle de tabaco no Brasil foi mostrado pela Dra Vera Luiza da Costa e Silva Chefe do Secretariado da Convenção Quadro para o Controle do Tabaco da OMS . Podemos refletir sobre o que da certo neste modelo para aplicar nos demais programa de promoção de saúde e minimização de riscos. Conhecer a medicina Ayurveda foi uma oportunidade trazida pelo Dr Rajagopala da Índia . A leveza da Dra Susan Andrews falando da prática exitosa ( no HCFMUSP) em Medicina Mente e Corpo foi inspiradora saber que há alguém pensando nos profissionais de saúde e diminuindo estress através da prática da meditação ( ou seja levar a forma correta de respirar). A cultura da paz trazida pela Monja Coen Roshi foi realmente pacificadora, mostrando como podemos nos tornar elementos de paz, alegria e felicidade, praticando a gentileza, respeito, não reclamando . O autoconhecimento é essencial para perceber o outro e tirar o foco de si . Ouvir e entender o outro, espalhar a semente do bem e ter um cuidado amoroso.

Há 6 meses comecei a ligar para colegas da Medicina do Estilo de Vida com um convite: formar um grupo exclusivamente de MEV no qual todas as pessoas interessadas no assunto pudessem trocar ideias, compartilhar informações e, acima de tudo, se conectar. Colegas valiosíssimos toparam (Renato Baena, Gabriel Rozin, Silvia Lagrotta, Roberto de Almeida, Rodrigo Demarch e Lucas Medeiros) e surgiu o CBMEV. Através do Dr. Renato, veio convite para trazermos a prova de certificação para o Brasil e a organização do congresso. Frio na barriga: nem um centavo em caixa, experiência zero para organizar evento, o desejo corajoso de realizar o evento sem patrocínio e muito pouco tempo. Mas acreditamos na mensagem que queríamos propagar e encaramos o desafio! Além disso, conhecemos o pessoal da Ana Paula, super empolgados e recebemos o apoio dos colegas Lazzarini, Vania Assaly, Sella e Daniela. Isso nos deu muita confiança!Contamos com muita ajuda. Life is literally shifting after each decision --- even if the outcome isn’t instantaneous --- we’re always in a constant state of change.

And the interesting thing is, even if we’re in a constant state of change, humans are GREAT at adaptation.
.
So great in fact, that ironically it can halt our progress in health (or really any aspect of our lives) if we’re not aware of this phenomenon.
.
Something I see a lot not only in my practice, but in everyday life interactions is that people tend to quickly forget about how far they’ve come. How far they’ve changed and progressed in such a short amount of time because their body quickly adapts to the new “normal.”
.
We then start to feel unsatisfied with out progress and our results because we feel like we haven’t made ANY progress, but in reality, have moved forward by several leaps & bounds.
.
One way to make sure that this doesn’t happen to you is to take time to be grateful for where you are now, and reflect upon how far you’ve come.
.
Practice this specific gratitude exercise + practice being grateful for all things in your life daily is a great way to make sure your ability to adapt, doesn’t affect your progress!

Sleep

There’s so much to say about sleep. 
But I’m pretty tired. 
So, another time. 
For now, this is my bedside table, and oh the pull of soft lamplight and a good book. (@robynpuglia you were of course right, having finally started it, it is really good.) I am going to try try TRY to be in bed by 9.30 to read my book, lights out at 10, every night this week. (Except Thursday, which is Book Group 👏👏👏💛) Tempting as it is to stay slumped on the sofa until after the news, I know what I need is more sleep.

And so to 🛏. Goodnight.

I gave a lecture today at the cool @uniwestlondon with tips on how to build a wellness business or a business as a nutritional therapist. I was told there'd be about 15 people and there were more like 50 which was a tad daunting but it was fun (thanks so much to Nutritionist Jo Oates for asking me to speak). .
The principles of starting most ventures are the same, including plenty of due diligence & planning (I might write up the presentation as an article if anyone is interested!) but starting your own biz can be a bit of a white knuckle ride sometimes. When I launched Unbeelievable Health 8 years ago someone shared this quote with me and it really took the lid of the pressure cooker. Of course there are some moments that stink to high heaven, but being your own boss & pursuing something you are passionate about can indeed be very exciting, fun & rewarding. .
So focus on what could go RIGHT & make it happen! 💚💙 Sarah x

If you find yourself confused about nutrition, here are three simple steps to nourish your body:

1️⃣ Fill around half your plate with vegetables and the other half with high quality protein and carbs. 
2️⃣ Use as many natural, whole foods as possible to maximise your health benefits: for instance vegetables, whole grains, herbs, fish, beans, chickpeas, lentils etc. 
3️⃣ Lightly steam, oven roast and grill as many of your foods as possible, then drizzle olive oil, rapeseed oil or a nut oil onto your dishes for some healthy fats (and add some nuts and seeds if they’ll do with your dish).

You will hear people argue that if you go low carb you will miss out on nutrients because you're cutting out a food group 🍞
But low carb food still includes carbs, just better qualuty ones with a lot of variety, and more nutrient dense food in general.

And it doesn't mean just boring vegetables - you can include healthy fats when you ditch the sugar (and bread and pasta are effectively sugar as they are broken down into glucose and sent into the bloodstream).
Broccoli on its own may seem boring if you're not a health nut, but it's delicious cooked in butter or dripping. Or make a cauli and broccoli cheese bake.
And your taste buds will change too - you won't need everything to taste sweet anymore, and instead can include a wider variety of foods and tastes.
Your waistline will love you for it...especially as you age. For 3 out of 4 people, our metabolisms just don't handle refined foods like bread and pasta as well as we get older.

Let me start by saying that if you WANT to put fat into your coffee that’s absolutely fine (unconditional permission to eat all foods and all), but please be informed about what it really is and isn’t going to do. Being in a calorie deficit will lead to fat loss, irrelevant as to how many carbs you have.

I have issues with the unsubstantiated medical claims around keto. The keto diet is a method for being in a calorie deficit, with concomitant reduction of carbs to convince your body use ketones rather than glucose for energy. There is no solid evidence it is a healthier or more effective than a NORMAL calorie deficit that doesn’t require cutting a macronutrient.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now not EVERYONE who drinks bulletproof coffee in the morning thinks that it’s going to automatically make them lose weight, but there are a large number who do. Adding butter and coconut oil to your coffee is NOT going to magically improve fat loss. There is no good scientific evidence to support this whatsoever. There IS good evidence however that feeling full and satiated is helpful when staying in a calorie deficit, but I’d much rather have some eggs in the morning instead...

Postnatal, in Western medicine, is the term used for the period up to 6 weeks after birth. The WHO (World Health Organisation - not Roger Daltrey et al) describes the postnatal period as ''the most critical and yet the most neglected phase in the lives of mothers and babies". When I was developing my postnatal plan package I struggled with the term postnatal (or postpartum, used interchangeably). I agree this is a critical time for healing and recovery, but.......
Do you truly become a mother after just six weeks? And I'm sure you will agree, us mum's (mum's to be) don't just want to 'heal' and 'recover', we want to flourish and thrive! Right!? Matrescence, a Woman's transition into Motherhood, can actually be compared to adolescence in relation to the timescale of the transition.

With this in mind...... Bring on THE MOTHER PLAN! (I'm not completely sold on the title, ideas welcome 😝) I will guide you with creating your own personalised plan that acknowledges your need to replenish, restore and rebalance your physical body, but also, share tools that will help you embrace the shifts that can take place in your emotional and mental health, relationships, identity and sense of purpose.

The ground zero of The Mother Plan. These 4 areas are the backbone to a happy and healthy transition: ❤️Your beliefs - What are your beliefs about motherhood and parenting? Beliefs are usually influenced by past experiences so this could include your own upbringing.
❤️Values - these are your foundations to which you build a happy, healthy life. Why you do what you do? See my previous post on values.
❤️What is true for you? - feeling safe and able to be open about how you feel in your heart. It's OK to be scared. It's OK to be fearful and it's OK not to know what you're doing. The magic happens in the unknown! What's not OK is holding or suppressing these feelings inside.
❤️What's coming from other people? This is what you think you should be doing according to society and 21st century mumming.

BREAKFAST 🥕 BIRCHER

Inspired after browsing my birthday cookbooks by @thefoodmedic and @madeleine_shaw_ this morning whilst in the bath! 🛁+📚

A good start to the week for me and Eddie as the long dark very rainy days draw in!

I have slightly changed the recipes to fit what I have in my pantry (love my pantry! #oldskool )

Here you go:
Grate a carrot
A load of gluten free oats (p.s. I am not #coeliac but my Mum has been diagnosed so I am just having to consider her when cooking more and more as she visits etc. Hence g/f in stock)
A dollop of @kokodairyfree yoghurt YUM
A pinch of ground cinnamon 
Grated fresh ginger 
Some Algarve nectar 
Stir it all together with a splash of @oatly or whatever you fancy.
Finish with a topping of @linwoodshealthfoods flaxseed and pumpkin seeds.

Pop in jars and leave in fridge overnight so it's a 👉👉👉 Grab n Go tomorrow morning !

I am going to TRY and get into a new habit of doing overnight oats or bircher this winter for me and Eddie. He typically skips breakfast or has coffee on the bus into work and I am hit and miss on weekdays, in all honesty, despite feeling better when I do have my breakfast. Weekend brunch however; I am all over that!

Oat milk is so easy, cheap and simple to make

Only 2 ingredients: oats and water!
Yummy 😋 and of course best of all without the cruelty of the dairy industry ..so that always makes everything taste 100% better

1c rolled oats or quick cooking oats
3c water
Soak for 30 min 
Drain and rinse off

Then
Add oats to blender with 3 cups of fresh new water
Blend
Then strain your milk thru strainer or nut milk bag
Add maple syrup or agave a little at a time to sweeten and taste

As such humans are on borrowed time from our first breath as cells age, get damaged and replicate themselves towards this ever encroaching biological limit..(I am such fun on a Monday). The science of telomere testing plays into this lifespan discussion as the more often a cell has divided the shorter the protective ‘telomere’ will be on the end of the chromosome within the cells. This is the result you see above 
In effect this is why telomere testing is the only true biological age available and testing telomere length is the human equivalent of chopping down tree to count the rings on the trunk. 
The question, as ever, is why? 
Science is pushing ways to reduce cell damage, toxicity, inflammation and nutrients that enhance the enzyme telemorase that protects our chromosomes. Knowing your result may influence the focus on one or more of those triggers.

I do not like the word detox..let’s be clear..there is no quick fix of it and it is a daily maintenance job. So any product that claims to detox you in a day or a few.... run!... It must be remembered however that no study has ever shown that eating a lot of fruit is unhealthy (quite the opposite!) Levels of sugar in whole fruits is relatively small compared to added sugar in foods such as toffee, white bread or jam. Having said this drying fruit removes water and significantly concentrates the amount of sugar you’re eating and so sticking with natural fruits as they come is much better for your health.

In our house, we often make slightly bigger meals so there is some left over or we leave the oven on and throw something in that can cook (unattended) while we eat 👩🏼‍🍳
In the interest of reducing waste, it’s also an opportunity to use up produce that is starting to look a little sad in the veg rack. Roasting veggies gives them an extra few days to be eaten - or, once cooked, they can be thrown in the freezer for later 🥦🍆🥕🍠
Yesterday I did a bit of both - extra chicken from our Sunday dinner and roasting veggies while we ate. I even managed to make enough to spread across 2-3 days 🙌🏻

It’s long been know that there is a link between red meat and colon cancer and generally I think this is quite well know amongst the general public. What is more recent in terms of evidence is the link found between processed meats and cancer. Many processed meats have nitrosamines added to them which have now been categorised by the WHO as carcinogenic (ie consumption of them will directly increase the risk of cancer). To quote via the original article I read about lifestyle tips to reduce cancer on the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine website: “Multiple epidemiological studies have found a relationship between processed meat intake and increased risk of colorectal cancer. In 2018, an analysis of the massive UK biobank study involving 262,195 women found that just processed meat intake equivalent to 2 sausages a week was linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. The WHO and WCRF have issued repeated warnings that nitrite rich processed meats are definite carcinogens.” The message seems clear - cut down on red meat and processed meats. If eating cured meats, try to choose high quality whole muscle meats and, in general, know that Serrano ham has low nitrites, biltong, Parma ham & prosciutto don’t have added nitrites.

While Bryce and I were planning our trip to Italy, we heard about the amazing fresh water springs ⛲️ that were all around the city. Restaurants can charge you extra for water and it doesn’t come free with your meals. It was fun to explore the city and see the different water springs all around. While we were in Bolivia, fresh water wasn’t readily available and was hard to find. We would purchase 2 liter bottles at the local market and fill up that way.

EMFs or electromagnetic frequencies are the energy that comes off and radiates from most devices that are plugged in to charge or operate. While it’s unclear exactly what these frequencies may mean for our long term health, it is clear that they are an additional stimulus in a world where we are bombarded with stimuli.

A lot of my patients come in with some level of anxiety, and one of the first things I like to address is - what can each of us do our own lives to reduce the chaos, if only a little?

We live in a kinetic frenetic world. Cell phones, computers, cars, trains, WiFi, light all day and year round, noise pollution, you get it. The body is a sensing thing and takes this input to heart. Here are a couple ways I like to give my body a break from the hustle and bustle.

. ▫️I put my phone on airplane mode when I’m not using it, when it’s close to my body, and before bed.
▫️ My WiFi router is plugged into a timer that turns the WiFi in the house off before bed and back on right around wake up.
▫️ At least one day a week, no screen time after work - no phone, computer or tv. I’m aiming for 3 these days.
▫️ I use a battery operated clock and leave my phone on airplane outside the bedroom.
▫️ I unplug appliances that are not in use, when plugged in their EMF is much stronger.
▫️ Turn off unnecessary lights and dim the house lights one hour before bed.

Who needs a gym?! Nourish your body, mind, and spirit by moving your body in nature. Remove those earbuds, engage all your senses, incorporate some stillness and/or prayer, and celebrate your belonging to the natural world.

Stuck for inspiration on what moves to try? Here are things I like to incorporate into my walks:
🌿 Push-ups (put your hands on a log if the ground is too muddy!)
🌿 Squats (try variations on the standard squat to target different muscle groups)
🌿 Tricep dips on a log or bench
🌿 Plank (clear the ground first... I once put my elbow on a spiky chestnut 😬)
🌿 Why not climb a tree or walk along a log? Have fun!!

Good morning, DDF followers. Being that it's Monday, we thought we would talk a bit this morning about coffee.  A complex and controversial global commodity, one with significant economic, social, environmental and human health impacts... there’s a lot more going on in that mug than just a boost of energy in the morning.

Despite some of the controversies surrounding coffee, numerous studies have demonstrated health benefits connected to its consumption in unsweetened form. From helping memory to preventing Parkinson’s disease and dementia, to increasing metabolism and helping to reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer, moderate coffee consumption appears to be recommendable for a large portion of the adult population. 
One meta-analysis study showed a connection between consistent coffee consumption, including decaffeinated varieties (and also tea), and the reduction of risk for developing type 2 diabetes, and there are several other research studies that support those findings.

For those wanting to sweeten their coffee, in order to receive more benefit than harm it is best to use unrefined sweeteners such as raw and organic honey, raw cane sugar and possibly plant-derived alternatives such as stevia.
Specific nutritional values of coffee that lead to many of these above benefits, include very high antioxidant content,  B-vitamins, as well as minerals such as potassium, magnesium and manganese.
