. . . I mean . . . 馃く . . . what do we do? In my honest opinion, we don鈥檛 have a clear answer yet 馃し馃徏鈥嶁檧锔
Main thing for me when reading these articles is to look beyond the headlines - understanding the demographic, geographic and psychographic of those studies as it has a big impact on the results馃敩
We all know alcohol abuse isn鈥檛 healthy, the need to drink everyday isn鈥檛 a good sign and drinking to excess is unlikely to do us any good 馃檯馃徏鈥嶁檧锔
But a few drinks every now and then, enjoying wine paired with food, the joy of letting our hair down - we鈥檙e yet to see any reason why combined with a healthy lifestyle a drink (or few) can鈥檛 be enjoyed 馃憤馃徏
So don鈥檛 let these reports panic you; the answer to a healthy lifestyle isn鈥檛 in one particular category. Think balance, moderation, the whole picture 馃挌

When you first start training or eating a healthier diet, there鈥檚 normally something that鈥檚 given you a kick up the backside: maybe a health scare; or maybe you鈥檙e trying to look better in a 馃憴馃槈. But, over time those reasons start to dwindle (I mean who cares about wearing a 馃憴 in winter; and those health scares are a distant memory!)

So, how do you overcome this.???

Well, when the motivation is there, use it to CREATE A HABIT! It can take as little as 21 days to form a habit. Once formed - you鈥檙e there!

Do you think I feel motivated to get up in train in the mornings when it鈥檚 dark and freezing outside (and my hubby is curled up in a little warm ball beside me?!馃槨). No. But it鈥檚 a habit.

Autopsy studies of women who died in car accidents have shown that 40% of women between the ages of 40 and 50 have microscopic cancers in their breasts. About 50% of men between the ages of 50 and 60 have microscopic cancers in their prostate. 100% of us by age 70 have microscopic cancers in our thyroid. How do you determine whether the cancer grows? The way you eat, move, think, sleep, socialize, and supplement. The biggest lifestyle factor? Food. Diet alone can modulate your risk of cancer by 30 to 35%. We used to think that we had to eradicate every cancer cell, now we know that the neighborhood of those cancer cells matters too. Create a good neighborhood by eating 1-2 pounds of vegetables per day, anti-inflammatory protein and slow carbs, and plant-based fats, as well as getting 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week, and at least 7 hours of sleep every night. You can鈥檛 do much about the genes you were born with. But each of those genes have switches which can be turned on and off. And guess what, your diet and lifestyle control whether those  switches turn on or stay off! 
And guess who controls your diet and lifestyle? Yeah, that鈥檚 right! YOU do! I know some of you are sighing at the thought of all those hearty carb heavy meals and subsequent sluggishness and willing the salads to come back. I know everyone differs in their opinion over carbs, but I鈥檓 definitely of the mentality of everything in moderation. So what are my tips for making the most of the hearty meal season?

馃専 If you鈥檙e going for mash, mix it up, chuck in some veggies eg carrot/cauliflower etc and switch between potato and sweet potato, or do a mix or both!
馃専Load up pasta with plenty of vegetables and protein, and give wholewheat pasta a go, or give lentil or pea pasta a try.
馃専Try stirring in nut butter into soup instead of cream, or add some red lentils in, which give soups creaminess without all the fat.
馃専Try substituting lentils for meat or even go 50:50 in pies, stews and hot pots

[ WHY DO YOU EXERCISE? ] it鈥檚 something I鈥檝e recently asked myself too. If I鈥檓 honest, I very much used to be pedantic about getting 鈥榵鈥 number of hours at the gym every day or 鈥榵鈥 number of minutes on the treadmill. My relationship with exercise/movement was somewhat obsessive/disordered and I found myself moving primarily only for aesthetic reasons (read: to control weight), pushing my own body to breaking point. Thankfully my relationship with exercise/movement have improved over the years and I now only do activities that I love (mostly walking, yoga and some light weights) and my 鈥榳hy鈥 has become moving because it makes me 鈥榟appy鈥 and helps to manage my anxiety (benefits my mental health), increases my flexibility and helps me to manage my IBS/digestive complaints. Sadly though the 鈥榞o hard or go home鈥 mentality still pervades the exercise space both in the gym and online, and increasingly the prominence of selfies on visual platforms like this, can make it even easier to rather unconsciously be guilted into exercising for all the wrong reasons / comparing our PB鈥檚 and bodies to those of others. The benefits of exercise are many and we have evidence of these benefits (especially) on mental health and even in our oncology patients, assisting with improved tolerance of treatment and importance also in remission/beyond cancer. So in NO way am I 鈥榙issing鈥 exercise but I challenge you to ask yourself what the real 鈥榃HY鈥 is that drives you to exercise? And to know that it doesn鈥檛 mean needing to even go to the gym OR smash it in a HIIT class if that鈥檚 not your jam. Also making sure that we actually 鈥榬est鈥 when our bodies ask for it, is equally as important! >> Something to ponder on this chilly Monday morning?! I鈥檇 love to hear your thoughts. PS. I wanted to create something that people could start to express and promote some time out. 
An opportunity to not only talk about how much they have studied but also the time they have taken out to allow their brain to rest. A chance to #reachforrealistic and find your life study balance.

Yesterday I went for my first official Autumn walk! I love the fact the leaves are changing colour 馃巸馃崅馃崄 Bailey and I visited the Royal Observatory to see a Planetarian show; I definitely recommend going if you want an educational (and fun!) family trip in London. In fact, the whole area of Greenwich is lovely with so much to do 鈥 I can鈥檛 wait to get stuck into the other museums and events they have on show

A long day doesn't feel like a long day if I think I've made a difference. Today I helped an elderly patient decide to undergo surgery to help stop him having falls. I also made sure a patient that presented with a chest infection was treated for a condition we nearly missed. I also stayed behind an extra hour, but days like this I don't mind it one bit.

Travel tips 馃泟馃殔馃殺

Traveling on a #wfpb lifestyle can sometimes seem impossible, however, it is doable with a bit of preparation.

In order to prepare food, I brought my own plastic containers and a pocket knife. Before I left Ireland, I stored the knife in the suitcase to avoid any trouble at the airport.
.
When I arrived in Los Angeles, I got a rental car, drove to the hostel and brought all my luggage to my room. I was tired as I hadn't slept for more than 24 hours and went to bed immediately. The next morning, I went to a supermarket to get some some fresh fruit and vegetables for my breakfast on the beach.
.
I found it very easy to be on a whole food, plant-based diet while travelling through California. The supermarkets have a good selection of fruit and vegetables, there is the ezekiel salt-free bread and oats for overnight porridge/oatmeal.
.
Beside the bread, oats and a meal at Follow Your Heart in LA, I stayed raw and consumed fruits, vegetables and nuts while traveling:

bananas, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, mangos, apples, plums, oranges, brussels sprouts, pears, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower and almonds 馃構
.
I even found a raw vegan sos-free Almond Fig cake and Almond Date cake in @wholefoods. I bought only a little piece of each as it was high in calories but it tasted amazing and only small amounts were very filling and kept me full and satisfied for a long time.

On the photo you can see the breakfast we had a couple of days ago. Overnight oats with hemp seeds, flaxseeds and chia seeds. We topped it with strawberries, grapes and almonds and enjoyed plums, mangos, bananas, oranges and apples beside the oats.

When I arrived in Los Angeles, I got a rental car, drove to the hostel and brought all my luggage to my room. I was tired as I hadn't slept for more than 24 hours and went to bed immediately. The next morning, I went to a supermarket to get some some fresh fruit and vegetables for my breakfast on the beach. . I found it very easy to be on a whole food, plant-based diet while travelling through California. The supermarkets have a good selection of fruit and vegetables, there is the ezekiel salt-free bread and oats for overnight porridge/oatmeal. . Beside the bread, oats and a meal at Follow Your Heart in LA, I stayed raw and consumed fruits, vegetables and nuts while traveling: . bananas, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, mangos, apples, plums, oranges, brussels sprouts, pears, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower and almonds 馃構 . I even found a raw vegan sos-free Almond Fig cake and Almond Date cake in @wholefoods. I bought only a little piece of each as it was high in calories but it tasted amazing and only small amounts were very filling and kept me full and satisfied for a long time. ------------------------- On the photo you can see the breakfast we had a couple of days ago. Overnight oats with hemp seeds, flaxseeds and chia seeds. We topped it with strawberries, grapes and almonds and enjoyed plums, mangos, bananas, oranges and apples beside the oats. . Did you know "crafting" has been used for years in Occupational Therapy?  I have gained a great appreciation for it as I have seen how much it does for Marc and my clients.

It can be any activity that gets you away from the daily demands of a 24/7 world.  Gardening, cooking, working on cars, woodworking like Marc, and even something as simple as coloring books.  And, of course, things like art and even knitting provide the "antidote" to the overwhelm we can feel in our digital lives. 馃帹. .
A study about the power of these types of mindful activities, or "crafting," or you could call them "hobbies," was done with a group of about 3500 "knitters." They reported greater happiness, less anxiety, greater confidence, enhanced cognitive abilities, better memory and improved ability to think through problems.  I totally see this with Marc.  Do you feel these benefits when you do "crafts?" I crave that time.  I don't get enough of it. 馃懇鈥嶐煆.

Other studies show how crafts can decrease depression and social anxiety as well as support people with a variety of health conditions. 馃搱

With its potent bioactive compounds and other nutrients, garlic may be good for much more than warding off vampires. Treatments with garlic extracts, powders and supplements have been found to significantly lower high blood pressure. So many of spend so much of our day (or life) in a constantly stressed state -- which never allows our body to heal or to be fully *healthy鈥

One of my favorite ways to tap into the present is the 4-7-8 breath.

4鈨 -- Breathe in deeply for 4 seconds
7鈨 -- Hold the breath for 7 seconds
8鈨 -- Release the breath slowly for 8 seconds
