It was my last last day in Europe. I had one brief evening in Burano and it was an all day task just to get there. A train ride, walking, a boat ride, a quest to find the Airbnb (more difficult than it sounds when in Venice), a quick lunch, and two more boat rides before I finally arrived. I was exhausted and slightly disappointed at how I’d spent my last day. To top it off I was told that I had an hour to spend on the island before the last tour boat left. Without much of a plan, I decided that I’d go ahead and miss that boat. I spent the rest of the evening wandering the maze of rainbow homes, completely in awe by how vibrant and alive my surroundings were. Every windowsill adorned with flowers, cacti, and succulents. Every door covered in bright curtains that danced in the wind. Even some of the people seemed to be dressed to match their pastel-colored homes. I just kept walking.. forgetting completely about my previous grievances. A few hours passed before I decided it was time for a glass of wine and a moment to say my farewells and thank yous to Europe. As the light faded and the tourist crowds dwindled to none, I thought about how wild and challenging the last fifteen days had been.. how I had no idea what the hell I was getting myself into when I decided to do it alone. I thought about every kind stranger that helped me along the way, or better yet, became a friend. And finally, about how so many little moments had instantly become invaluable memories. The kinds of memories I hope to tell stories about over and over again, until the day comes when only the pictures can tell them for me.
