Yesterday we had a lovely visit at Chateau Mazeyres in Pomerol. The nowadays 25.5HA estate was founded in the 18th century, 12HA of vines are situated around the chateau and the remaining HA’s are scattered around the Pomerol appellation.
In 1988 the Querre family sold the estate to Société Générales Pension fund. 1992 Alain Moueix was appointed the manager of the Chateau, he renovated the chateau and modernized the vinification which increased quality of the wines. In 2010 the estate was sold again to Sogecap, current owners.
The Chateau got it’s Organic certification in 2015 and the biodynamic certification only a few weeks ago, vintage 2018 will be the first biodynamic certified vintage, although the vineyards has been farmed using biodynamics since 2012.
As many other Chateaus in the region, Chateau Mazeyres also had problems with the mildew this year. Compared with 2016 the production decreased from 43HL/HA to 25HL/HA in 2018. In 2017, 57% of the grapes was lost to the frost.
The vineyards are planted with 73% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. One of the plots close to the Chateau was planted in 1957, these vines used to suffer from diseases but after converting to biodynamic farming the vines recovered and the yield has increased. The grapes are harvested manually by 46 pickers.
The chateau produces two wines, Chateau Mazeyres and the second wine Le Seuil de Mazeyres. The annual production varies depending on vintage but is about 100.000 bottles of which 60% is the first wine. Which plots that will be used for the first vs. second wine is decided with a blind tasting.
The wine is aged 12-14 months, after 5-6 months a pre-blend is made and the wine is then aged again before bottling.
For the tasting we were joined by the winemaker, Ludovic Guibert. We got a lovely vertical tasting of Chateau Mazeyres, vintages 2013/14/15/16. All vintages completely different, but keeping the identity of the chateau with fresh wines. The wines are acidic and well balanced, the more excellent vintages can be kept up to 20 years. The use of sulphur is decreased year over year but they do not believe that they will do a wine completely without added sulphur.
While everyone thinks we’re daintily eating croissants for breakfast every single day, this is what’s really going on behind the doors of a French kitchen.
The daily news + bread + coffee or tea + maybe jam x definitely butter

Impressive Acts I-IV; soon to be Act V. by gilets jaunes, joined by the Union Boss of Labor for transport, and students. Emmanuel Macron was very pusillanimous and unconvincing last night in his short speech (13 minutes) and didn’t convince 60% of the French afterwards, said France Info today. His disgraceful neoliberal actions towards students alone would make me mistrust him, but towards everyone less than über rich, it is a despicable spectacle. Speech: “too little, too late too many tricks/ traps,” as someone said. This man is fundamentally trying to gut the socialist protections: among them health care, education, social security, in the French economy and make it more “banker friendly .” Outside, in Provence and around, there does not seem to be a diminished gilet jaune determination.

Bertollet.

My first week in a French community, the week of discovering, is over. It was a time I had a chance to leave and come back home (or a team could refuse to have me as an assistant, but it went well). According to the local tradition, I was left for a personal retreat in a small apartment in Agen city to think if I wanted to stay or no, despite my decision was quite obvious for me from the very beginning.
I remember my first days in Belfast, when I did not have any relevant experience. The absolutely unfamiliar ambience and job brought me in panic, I had no idea what should I do and how can I, how can all of us go through the difficult time. I went to visit my friend in Dublin (it was my second weekend), had a great time, but when I came back in the city I was just standing near the door thinking about my future. "Was it a right decision to come here? Or was it a mistake?". Maybe if in this very moment I had a chance to quit, I'd use it, I cannot say now, cause I was lost, lonely, and I had even noone to speak with (so my first honest dialogue happened with a ferryman somewhere in Irish sea). And now I am happy that I had no chance like that, because living in L'Arche Belfast gave me so much joy, so much love, so many happy moments, and most important it gave me people I love, gave me the force to continue my spiritual search after I was sure I had lost my way, gave me the purpose of existing and an understanding what did I really wanted to do.
One person called me a brave girl, and I am moving forward in my tries to deserve this name.
In the thick of winter, when you can no longer feel your toes and your nose is about to fall off, DRINK to keep yourself warm.
Such is the wise advice I dispensed my wedding guests as the weather - which had been on the verge of burning hell for 2 months - turned Antarctica on us during the lovely bucolic cocktail hour we had planned outside... ✌️🍷🍷🍷
Had the pleasure of meeting @lemagdejustine for a glass of wine @marche_victor_hugo and telling her about why I decided to start a food tour business in Toulouse. 👆 Link in bio (French/English).

Andrew finally got to start his welding classes. Our good friend Simone is a welder and generously offered to show him the ropes.
After only three classes this is his first project. It even involved a field trip to the local scrap yard for materials.
He is a young man on a mission. He started a kick starter campaign for an idea he has. You can find it at http://kck.st/20ZF8qd Feather and Fur Farm.
And the last pick under our tree (yet to be decorated). I have to say, holding up a 3.2M (about 10 feet for those still using inches) tree is not easy but his design and final product does it with ease!!!
Bon Dimanche! 🍊We’ve had a house full of sickness all weekend (thank you Pre-K🤦🏼♀️) But luckily the babes are feeling better and I managed to adapt a few recipes from my new cookbook I’m loving called ‘French Country Cooking’ by @mimithor. A beet salad with red cabbage, red onion, pomegranate seeds, capers, parsley and chopped almonds. Delish! And Celery Root soup with Dijon mustard topped with crispy lardons. And a glass of Beaujolais Nouveau because, well, Sunday. 🍷 Happy for a fresh school week tomorrow, to get my self to the doctor, and to finally finish painting our soon to be bedroom upstairs! Hope everyone has a nice Sunday. #mimithorisson#celeryroot#beetsalad#sundaylunch#lightlunch#newcookbook
