So much fun this month in @inkjournal’s Ink Flight #18 (July, 2018). Samples from three companies: Papier Plume, KWZ and Krishna. The variety was included so we could use the wonderful Caran D’Ache waterbrish pen. We also received a watercolor postcard to try our hand at coloring with fountain pen inks. Additionally we received two free months on Skillshare, an excellent online provider of so many wonderful classes. You will be able to find many lettering classes on Skillshare.

Had a great weekend teaching my Casual and Script lettering with these 7 talented artists taking their first steps with the brush and Mahl Stick at the July Workshop in LA!
Writing single stroke lettering with a brush is no easy task when you're a beginner but these guys took huge steps while learning the fundamental brush strokes and techniques required to go away and continue practicing these alphabets effectively.
Well done and thanks everyone, it's always a joy to meet new artists with a passion for lettering!!
Next Workshop is AUGUST 17-18th. Link in bio. 🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌
Quick bit of bashout fun to finish the day!
This bold casual is my Go-To style for window splashes and is loads of fun to write. Usually I'm writing this style anywhere from 1foot to 6 feet high.
The letter shapes are based on my standard single stroke casual alphabet that I teach which are fattened up by double stroking the downstrokes and filling them in. This alphabet was done at 3" with a Letterart SWKM series size 8 brush, the same brush that we use in my workshops to produce a lighter weight 3" letter with a single stroke. Paint used was 1 Shot Poster Enamel Purple on white paper. 🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌
3 brush strokes makes this #MikeStevens inspired "a". The late and great Mike Stevens was one of the greatest brush letterers that ever lived in my humble opinion. The styles and techniques that he developed are second to none. I've been doing my best to emulate his script techniques for the last 30 years and still learn something new every time I write. They say you only have to do two things to perfect hand lettering: 1. Practice every day. 2. Live long enough.
This is a sneak peek at my Casual Script Brushstroke poster that I have been working on all week which I think is ready to go to the art scanners. This poster will compliment my current Casual Capital's tutorial poster that's crrently available on my website. These will make a wonderful couple!
We will be working on both styles at my upcoming Script and Casual workshop on July 14th and 15th in Los Angeles, still a couple of spots left so book yours now if you don't want to miss out as these workshops do sell out. 😎🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌
Big thanks to everyone who has purchased my Casual Lettering Brushstroke Tutorial Poster! 😎👍 If you haven't got your hands on one yet just head over to my website (link in bio) www.JohnKingLetterArt.com where they are available in 18"x24" and 16"x20" sizes printed on acid free archival matte paper.
These posters are printed from a high resolution art scan of the original piece that I hand lettered with @1shotpaints Poster Enamels on White Bond Paper using a LetterArt SWKM Series Size 8 Brush and mahlstick.
I wanted these posters to show the letters exactly as they came off the brush rather than print from an edited computerised vector file, which they do beautifully with all of the brush stroke textures and color translucencies perfectly reproduced.
I must say, laying down 120+ brush strokes one color at a time and out of sequence without error and no opportunity to wipe off mistakes proved to be a much bigger challenge than I anticipated, especially when things like but not limited to suddenly getting the hiccups mid stroke on the "S" happen during what is shaping up to be a successful piece! After over 30 draft versions this is the final result!
Should I do Script poster next?🤔

Workshop will be taking place on April 21-22 in the picturesque Victorian township of Euroa in the AMAZING studio of @writtenbywinton who was my first employer and the man who is responsible for me falling in love with signwriting from the very first time I laid eyes on his work in 1986 as a teenager.
Winton will be there too along with my second employer from back in the day Arthur German who was/is also a major inspiration, mentor and friend to myself and Winton, so this workshop promises to be a rare opportunity to also learn tips from these master craftsman who I regard as being among the best on the planet

We just had a huge weekend of Casual Lettering study and practice at my March Casual Intensive weekend workshop aka #casualbootcamp at my studio in LA!
Huge first steps were taken by @littlewingcreates and Kevin O'Donnell who were both first timers with the brush and mahl stick.
At this workshop students spend a lot of time studying casual letter shapes along with brush stroke practice and letter execution, followed with some layout and design study before producing their own Showcard style sign to keep.
it was great to share my craft of 30 years with two talented artist with a passion to learn it!
Special shoutout to Kevin for making the trek from #Detroit to take the workshop!! Next up, Script and Casual Australia in April then back to LA for May. 😎🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌🖌
