🚨The Curse Of Llorona Trailer is 2 Minutes Of Sheer Terror produced by James Wan🚨 -
io9 got a peek at The Curse of La Llorona at San Diego Comic-Con—and now everyone else can join us in our excited (yet petrified) anticipation with the arrival of the film’s spooky first trailer. The movie is by first-time feature director Michael Chaves, who was just hired for a little movie called Conjuring 3. As the title suggests, The Curse of La Llorona makes use of the horrifying “weeping woman” legend from Mexican folklore, which the film’s press release explains thusly: La Llorona. The Weeping Woman. A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand. The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations. In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain. Now her tears are eternal. They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed. La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious…and her methods more terrifying. Did we mention this movie is produced by James “Welcome to my Conjuring multiverse, now you’ll never sleep again” Wan? As you can see from the trailer below, The Curse of La Llorona is set in 1970s Los Angeles and stars Linda Cardellini and Patricia Velasquez (as well as Raymond Cruz, Marisol Ramirez, Sean Patrick Thomas, Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen, and Roman Christou). Cardellini plays a social worker and single mom whose latest case ends in tragedy; it also introduces her to a lurking monster who is very much not “just a folktale.” As you will soon see. That’s really more of a clip than a teaser, which actually works quite well considering how freaking tense that entire scene is.
🚨The Curse of La Llorona Poster: Beware the Weeping Woman🚨 -
It's easy to see why Chaves was hired to direct the next Conjuring film, based on the Curse of La Llorona trailer alone. If one didn't know any better, they might even assume the footage is from a new Conjuring movie, judging by its '70s setting and creepy demonic villain. Moreover, the trailer includes a clip from a set piece (one in which Cardellini's onscreen children are tormented by La Llorona in their car) that builds suspense and delivers jump scares using many of the same techniques that The Conjuring series is now famous for employing. Still, it remains to be seen how The Curse of La Llorona fares at the box office without actually having the Conjuring brand to fall back on. The movie is also set to arrive in April 2019, which is going to be a competitive month for horror films, between the release of the new Pet Sematary, the Hellboy reboot and Chaves' ghost story. It's probably a good thing that WB and New Line are releasing this creepy teaser online now, in order to get people buzzing about La Llorona well ahead of her closeup on the big screen.
This week’s #GradStudentSpotlight is on Ali Al-Badran, a recipient of a 2016 #TXSG Grant-in-Aid of Graduate Research. ⠀
Ali investigated the effects of insecticides, used in controlling tawny #crazyants (a wide-spread invasive species), on two commercially important #shrimp species: brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus) and white shrimp (Litopenaeus setiferus). ⠀
Crazy ants are a wide-spread pest in #texas and are commonly fought with the two insecticides fipronil and imidacloprid. These insecticides are known to be highly #toxic and are now entering our waters and affect #coastal ecosystems.⠀ Ali looked at different variables in the shrimp that could be compromised by the insecticides in controlled laboratory experiments. In particular, growth (weight and length), moulting, survival, lethal concentration, behavioral- and physical changes, and body chemical composition.⠀
His #research concluded that the EPA benchmark concentrations for fipronil have lethal effects. EPA permitted concentrations of imidacloprid were not per se #lethal , but they had other detrimental effects. ⠀
Use of pesticides has increased rapidly in the US in recent years. Ali’s study will inform regulators and policy makers to establish concentrations of insecticides for controlling pests that will not endanger the #seafood economy and the health of ecosystems.⠀
