Today's saint - St. Elizabeth of Hungary, pray for us!

In her short life, Elizabeth manifested such great love for the poor and suffering that she has become the patroness of Catholic charities and of the Secular Franciscan Order. The daughter of the King of Hungary, Elizabeth chose a life of penance and asceticism when a life of leisure and luxury could easily have been hers. This choice endeared her in the hearts of the common people throughout Europe.

At the age of 14, Elizabeth was married to Louis of Thuringia, whom she deeply loved. She bore three children. Under the spiritual direction of a Franciscan friar, she led a life of prayer, sacrifice, and service to the poor and sick. Seeking to become one with the poor, she wore simple clothing. Daily she would take bread to hundreds of the poorest in the land who came to her gate.

After six years of marriage, her husband died in the Crusades, and Elizabeth was grief-stricken. Her husband’s family looked upon her as squandering the royal purse, and mistreated her, finally throwing her out of the palace. The return of her husband’s allies from the Crusades resulted in her being reinstated, since her son was legal heir to the throne.

In 1228, Elizabeth joined the Secular Franciscan Order, spending the remaining few years of her life caring for the poor in a hospital which she founded in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Elizabeth’s health declined, and she died before her 24th birthday in 1231. Her great popularity resulted in her canonization four years later.

GOSPEL
Mark 11: 22-24

Latin:
In illo tempore: Respondens Jesus discipulis suis, ait illis: Habete fidem Dei.
Amen, dico vobis, quia, quicumque dixerit huic monti: Tollere et mittere in mare, et non haesitaverit in corde suo sed crediderit, quia, quodcumque dixerit, fiat, fiet ei.
Propterea dico vobis: Omnia quaecumque orantes petitis, credite quia accipietis, et evenient vobis.

English:
At that time, Jesus answering, said to His disciples: Have the faith of God.
Amen, I say to you, that whosoever shall say to this mountain, Be thou removes and be cast into the sea, and shall not stagger in his heart, but believe that whatsoever he hath said shall be done, it shall be done unto him.
Therefore I say unto you, all things whatsoever you ask when ye pray, believe that you shall receive, and they shall come into you.

St Gregory, was born into a pagan family in Neocaesarea, Asia Minor. He received the Holy Gospel in his youth, and became a Christian. For the continuation of his studies, St Gregory went to Alexandria, and eagerly went to the Alexandrian Catechetical School, where the venerable presbyter Origen taught.
.
St Gregory wrote of his mentor: “This man received from God a sublime gift, to be an interpreter of the Word of God for people, to apprehend the Word of God, as God Himself did use it, and to explain it to people, insofar as they were able to understand it.” Saint Gregory studied for eight years with Origen, and was baptized by him.
.
Having returned to Neocaesarea from Alexandria, the saint fled worldly affairs. He went to the desert, where by fasting and prayer he attained spiritual accomplishment and gifts of clairvoyance and prophecy. St Gregory loved life in the wilderness and wanted to remain in solitude until the end of his days, but the Lord willed otherwise.

The Cistercians formed part of the effort to restore the Benedictine community back to a more faithful adherence to the "Rule of St Benedict.”
.
St Gertrude entered the Benedictine Order at Helfta and became a nun. She devoted herself to her studies, and received education in many subjects, familiarising herself with the scriptures of Church Fathers, including those of St Augustine.

Sixth Resumed Sunday after Pentecost

Our mother of the Catholic and Roman Church is permeated with the word of Christ, and is admirably represented by the three measures of meal, which the energy of fermentation wholly leavened; and by the mustard tree, the greatest of its species, where the birds of heaven are glad to find shelter. May the “leaven” of the doctrine of Jesus penetrate and transform our souls!

Today's saint - St. Margaret of Scotland, pray for us!

Not Scottish by birth, Margaret was the daughter of Princess Agatha of Hungary and the Anglo-Saxon Prince Edward Atheling. She spent much of her youth in the court of her great-uncle, the English king, Edward the Confessor. Her family fled from William the Conqueror and was shipwrecked off the coast of Scotland. King Malcolm befriended them and was captivated by the beautiful, gracious Margaret. They were married at the castle of Dunfermline in 1070.

Margaret tried to improve her adopted country by promoting the arts and education. For religious reform, she encouraged synods and was present for the discussions which tried to correct religious abuses common among priests and laypeople, such as simony, usury, and incestuous marriages. With her husband, she founded several churches.

Margaret was not only a queen but a mother. She and Malcolm had six sons and two daughters. Margaret personally supervised their religious instruction and other studies.

Although she was very much caught up in the affairs of the household and country, she remained detached from the world. She had certain times for prayer and reading Scripture. She ate sparingly and slept little in order to have time for devotions. She and Malcolm kept two Lents, one before Easter and one before Christmas. During these times she always rose at midnight for Mass. On the way home, she would wash the feet of six poor persons and give them alms. She was always surrounded by beggars in public and never refused them. It is recorded that she never sat down to eat without first feeding nine orphans and 24 adults.

In 1093, King William Rufus made a surprise attack on Alnwick castle. King Malcolm and his oldest son, Edward, were killed. Margaret, already on her deathbed, died four days after her husband.

Two years ago, I began veiling.
As I was growing more spiritually, as well as learning more about the different traditions of the Catholic faith, I was surprised to of encountered the very beautiful tradition of veiling, because I’ve never heard of it before. I instantly fell in love when I learned about the symbolism, reverence, and beauty of it. Especially, as it was something so special women can do, apart from men, as each visibly serves a different role for Mass.
At first, I was afraid I would be judged, especially since the three other women who veil at my Church are quite elderly, but I realized I am not veiling for other people nor for their approval, rather for the greater glory and honor of God alone. I remember the very first Mass I veiled, and I felt I was in a whole different realm. I truly felt I was closer to Heaven, and everyone around me was hidden, and my eyes were only on the celebration of the Mass. Be that as it may, through veiling I’ve helped others to learn more about this beautiful tradition, and through the grace of God, many women have decided to take up the practice as well. One particular thing I’ve noticed when girls come up to me and ask me about veiling, they want to veil as well, but they are afraid! Oh, how relatable that feeling is. I now feel fear of doing something good and holy, is just one of those things Satan uses to prevent us from following God’s Will. Especially, because it helps us to imitate Our Blessed Mother more, who Satan absolutely fears and despises. Ladies! Pray for strength and courage to veil, especially to Our Lady, and I promise She will guide you. (Veil from @veilsbylily )

Today is the Feast Day of Spiritual Warrior Saint Albert the Great ✝ Pray for us

Albert the Great was a German Catholic Dominican friar and bishop and one of the 36 Doctors of the Church. Scholars have referred to him as the greatest German philosopher and theologian of the Middle Ages.

He was the eldest son of a powerful and wealthy German lord of military rank and was well-educated in the liberal arts. After Albert experienced an encounter with the Blessed Virgin Mary, he chose to become a member of the Dominican Order. He thereafter studied theology.
His boundless interests prompted him to write a compendium of all knowledge: natural science, logic, rhetoric, mathematics, astronomy, ethics, economics, politics, and metaphysics. His explanation of learning took 20 years to complete.

One of his students was the famous Saint Thomas Aquinas who would also become a doctor of the Church. During his life, Albert wrote thirty eight volumes covering topics ranging from philosophy to geography, astronomy, law, friendship and love.

Three years after his death, his grave was opened and his body was found incorrupt. When his grave was again opened centuries later, they found his skeleton. His relics are presently in the St. Andreas church in Colonge. He is the Patron Saint of medical technicians, natural sciences, philosophers, scientists and students.

Since the year 1300, under a stain-glass window in the Dominican church of St. Andreas in Cologne, one can read these words: .
“This sanctuary was built by Bishop Albert, flower of philosophers and wise men, model of good customs, brilliant and splendorous destroyer of heresies, and scourge of evil men. Place him, O Lord, in the number of Thy Saints. .
"By nature he had an instinct for great things. Thus, like Solomon, he begged God for the gift of wisdom, which intimately unites man to God, expands hearts, and raises the souls of the faithful to the heights. Wisdom taught him how to unite an intensive intellectual life with a profound spiritual life, for he was at the same time an initiator of a powerful intellectual movement, a great contemplative, and a man of action.” . .

Today's saint - St. Albert the Great, pray for us!

Albert the Great was a 13th-century German Dominican who decisively influenced the Church’s stance toward Aristotelian philosophy brought to Europe by the spread of Islam.

Students of philosophy know him as the master of Thomas Aquinas. Albert’s attempt to understand Aristotle’s writings established the climate in which Thomas Aquinas developed his synthesis of Greek wisdom and Christian theology. But Albert deserves recognition on his own merits as a curious, honest, and diligent scholar.

He was the eldest son of a powerful and wealthy German lord of military rank. He was educated in the liberal arts. Despite fierce family opposition, he entered the Dominican novitiate.

His boundless interests prompted him to write a compendium of all knowledge: natural science, logic, rhetoric, mathematics, astronomy, ethics, economics, politics, and metaphysics. His explanation of learning took 20 years to complete. “Our intention,” he said, “is to make all the aforesaid parts of knowledge intelligible to the Latins.” He achieved his goal while serving as an educator at Paris and Cologne, as Dominican provincial, and even as bishop of Regensburg for a short time. He defended the mendicant orders and preached the Crusade in Germany and Bohemia.

Albert, a Doctor of the Church, is the patron of scientists and philosophers.

I was watching Fr. Mitch Pacwa on EWTN not too long ago lament that few Catholics know how to pray the rosary these days. They don’t know the Doxology or their Hail Holy Queen prayer. Yet when you read about the saints, blessed, and venerated among our tradition, so very many honored and promoted the rosary. ....
..
I began praying the rosary every day six months ago, and looking back now, at the start, I would not have believed the transformation it’s had on my life. The dedication and fortitude it takes to pray this every day, how it’s opened my heart to more continuous and spontaneous prayer throughout the day, how I’ve come to know and love our Lord and His Mother more and more. It’s deepened my understanding of our beautiful faith and it’s made me a more conscientious and caring person.
....
..
Why don’t more people do this regularly? Is it lack of time or know how? Do they have a hard time praying this along? Does it feel too monotonous? ....
..
All in all, the rosary is quite simple to pray. And once you get the basics down, you can start to work on settling into the beauty of the monotony of them (yes, beauty and monotony can go hand in hand) and into a deeper appreciation of the words, the Mysteries, our Blessed Mother, and our Lord. ....
..
So if it’s been a long time since you last prayed the rosary or you aren’t sure how to do it but feel a pull towards it just the same, or if you’d simply like someone to pray along with you, I invite you to read the post that’s in my bio link, “How to Pray the Rosary in a Handful of Steps.” ....
..
In that post, you’ll find a rundown of the rosary prayers and how to get started, as well as links to listen to each of the Mysteries as I pray them - easy to find, all in one place (alternatively you can find them on The Catholic Mama Podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, and Google Play). Pray along with me in the car or the kitchen or anywhere. I hope you find as much meaning, joy, and love in the rosary as I have had.

15 November
St ALBERT the Great (Bishop, Confessor, Doctor †1280 AD)

GOSPEL
Matthew 5: 13-19
⚜️⚜️⚜️
At that time: Jesus said to His disciples:
You are the salt of the earth.
But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted?
It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.
You are the light of the world.
A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.
So let your shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets.
I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one title shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.
He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven.
But he that shall do and teach, shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

The saint and doctor of the Church who would be known as ‘Albertus Magnus’ was born sometime before 1200 AD, and born probably in Bavaria. St Albert attended the University of Padua where he studied Aristotle and his writings. This philosophical instruction would be foundational to his work.
.
In his twenties, Albert experienced an encounter with the Blessed Virgin. This moved him so much he chose to enter the Dominican Order, thereafter studying theology. He excelled in study and became a lecturer at Cologne. St Albert traveled to lecture both regionally and internationally. One of his students was St Thomas Aquinas, who would eventually be venerated also as a saint and doctor of the Church.

How hard it is to live in the world, when you’re not of the world! It’s a constant battle between the easy superficial and materialistic we encounter, opposed to the hidden beauty and hard truth we must sacrifice and offer our lives for. My unhappiness was found in the middle of both worlds, as I struggled and veered off left to right, for aren’t we influenced and hold a certain wishfulness when temptation strikes the unexpected sinner? Through prayer and the sacraments , we have all we need for this constant fight with God, for when He allows Satan to test us, He can test us severely. To whose fault is it but our own? Especially when we neglect prayer, penance, and sacrifice, we could be overcome with temptation and sin. For as Satan is cruel, neglecting God is crueler. “God understands”, is a lie we tell ourselves for comfort as our conscience eats away. God understands you didn’t have time for Him out of a whole day. God understands you chose hours of entertainment over one hour of prayer. God understands you did things for your friends approval, rather than His own. He understands so well, because God knows you completely. Then again I ask, to whose fault is it but our own when trial strikes? When God breaks and takes all that you loved and found value in? How is it sad, when God is trying to show you that you can’t live without Him, because in Heaven, it’s Him. If you can’t live even on earth loving God, you can’t live in Heaven loving God.

Today is the Feast Day of Spiritual Warrior Saint Lawrence O'Toole ✝ Pray for us

Lawrence O'Toole was born around 1128 in County Kildare, Ireland. His father was the chief of Hy Murray, and his mother one of the Clan O'Byrne. At the age of 10, Lawrence was given up as a hostage to King Mac Murehad of Leinster, who treated him with such inhumanity that his father obliged the King to turn him over to the Bishop of Glendalough.

Lawrence grew to be such a model of virtue, that at the young age of 25 he was chosen to replace the Bishop as abbot upon the Bishop’s death. He governed his community with virtue and prudence, and was unanimously chosen to fill the new See of Dublin in 1161.

In 1171, Lawrence visited King Henry II of England to handle affairs of his diocese. While approaching the altar to officiate at Mass, the Archbishop was violently attacked by a maniac. Everyone present thought he was mortally wounded, but Lawrence came to, asked for some water, blessed it and applied it to his wound. The bleeding immediately stopped and the Archbishop continued to celebrate Mass.

St. Lawrence was most widely known for his piety, charity, and prudence, and was respected as a negotiator.

St. Lawrence was chosen abbot in 1150, though he was only twenty-five years old, and governed his numerous community with wonderful virtue and prudence. In 1161 St. Lawrence was unanimously chosen to fill the new metropolitan See of Dublin. About the year 1171, he was obliged, for the affairs of his diocese, to go over to England to see the king, Henry II, who was then at Canterbury. The Saint was received by the Benedictine monks of Christ Church with the greatest honor and respect. On the following day, as the holy archbishop was going to the altar to officiate, a maniac, who had heard much of his sanctity, and who was led on by the idea of making so holy a man another St. Thomas, struck him a violent blow on the head. All present concluded that he was mortally wounded; but the Saint came to himself, asked for some water, blessed it, and having his wound washed with it, the blood was immediately stopped, and the Archbishop celebrated Mass. In 1175 Henry II of England became offended with Roderic, the monarch of Ireland, and St. Lawrence undertook another journey to England to negotiate a reconciliation between them. Henry was so moved by his piety, charity, and prudence that he granted him everything he asked, and left the whole negotiation to his discretion. Our Saint ended his journey here below on the 14th of November, 1180, and was buried in the church of the abbey at Eu, on the confines of Normandy. His feast day is November 14th.

“The soul which is espoused by the priceless ring of good will, that is of divine love, and wishes to serve God in the spirit of truth, must first cleanse her conscience by a pure and complete confession and make a most firm resolution of not wanting ever again to sin mortally, and instead to die a thousand times if that were possible, because the person who is in mortal sin is not a member of Christ but of the devil, and is deprived of the goods of holy mother the Church and cannot do anything which will profit her for eternal life. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
And she does this also because to wish to serve this God faithfully requires a resolution not to sin mortally, as was said above. But note that, should you be in mortal sin, you should never despair of divine goodness nor cease to do whatever good you can do so that in this way you can get out of sin. And with this hope, always do what is right in whatever state you find yourself.”

Today is the Feast Day of Spiritual Warrior Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini ✝ Pray for us

Frances Xavier Cabrini (also called Mother Cabrini) was an Italian-American religious sister, who founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus — a Catholic religious institute that was a major support to the Italian immigrants to the United States. She was the first naturalized citizen of the United States to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. Her deep trust in the loving care of God gave her the strength to be a valiant woman doing the work of Christ.

In 35 years, Frances Xavier Cabrini founded 67 institutions dedicated to caring for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick. Seeing great need among Italian immigrants who were losing their faith, she organized schools and adult education classes.

Cabrini died at age 67 of complications from dysentery at Columbus Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, while preparing Christmas candy for the local children. She is the Patron Saint of Immigrants and hospital administrators.
