Today we had a breathtaking lunch at the brand new LAKESIDE restaurant at THE FONTENAY Hamburg.
The clarity of the restaurant in warm white tones reflects the lightness of the surrounding nature and forms the passepartout for the creations of the young and ambitious team around chef Cornelius Speinle and chef sommelier Stefanie Hehn.
The wine list is very appealing, especially because it does not follow trends. Sommelier Stefanie Hehn has created a map with an international character, which does not shy away from big names, confidently focuses on wines from France and California and also takes into account some more mature vintages.
We had the following wines:
Aperitif: Champagne Ruinart Rosé
Main course: Yalumba Viognier Eden Valley 2016
Dessert: Jordan Riesling Mellifera 2016
We want to highlight the Yalumba Viognier Eden Valley!
After harvest about 60% of the fruit was gently pressed directly to barrels, the rest to stainless steel tanks. The juice was allowed to passively interact with the air, oxidising out any bitter phenolics and creating a perfect environment for the indigenous yeasts, natural to the vineyard, to ferment. The wine was left on lees, which with regular batonnage for 10 months increased the complexity and creaminess of the wine and further heightened the palate weight.
Pure aromas reminiscent of fresh apricots, lifted ginger, saffron and fresh white flowers. A long, rich and luscious palate, with intense and expressive stone fruit flavours finishing with an alluring citrus freshness. This wine will continue to grow and develop in the bottle, firstly showing enhanced apricots and spice, then after a couple of years developing honey flavours and toast complexity. A wonderful food wine that complements spiced dishes.
