november is the time of year that really makes me appreciate my surroundings. here in guatemala, mother nature is so present - in the culture, in the landscapes, in the sunsets and in our day to day lives. even with our artisans, it is these exact flowers found right in their community that are embroidered into their handmade creations. they find inspiration from madre tierra and inspire me to stop and notice the magical powers she has. lake atitlan and the surrounding communities is really a spiritual place. and for those of us who can actually feel the energy from this region, we never want to leave.
do you have a place in nature you really connect with? maybe a beach or hike that fills up your soul?

I used to dance in clubs and abandoned buildings, now I most often dance in deserts, forests and temples. But honestly, none is better than the other.
Anywhere there is space to spin and throw my arms and legs far away from where they usually rest is a good place to dance. #justenjoy#eaglesnest#lakeatitlan Picture by @genevievelocas

“As I write this, I am sitting on the porch of a very expensive, but very well-worth it, AirBnb peering out over Lake Atitlán hidden away in the highlands of Guatemala. Sometimes I have to pinch myself that I have arrived here; To this place; To this lifetime. I remember only one year ago I was miserable in university, waking up everyday to do something that wasn’t in align with who I was or what I wanted from my time on this planet. It was a good thing objectively, but it wasn’t me. I think the idea that something can be good, but not necessarily be for us, is something that we, collectively, should consider more often. I remember one of the last senior seminars my graduating class had was all about grad school. Sorry, what? I had just completed 16 consecutive years of education and all there is to say is about how to choose a graduate program. I remember walking around afterwards and I was the only person in my entire cohort who wasn’t going into a masters program, medical school, or a traditional job. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that- I encourage anyone and everyone to do exactly what makes their heart soar- I just have such a difficult time believing that so many people wanted that. In fact, when I told my peers that I was traveling after graduation and had absolutely no plan for the future, many responses were something along the lines of: “Wow, I wish I could do that”.
What if we all quit throwing pennies into the fountain and just jumped in the water instead...”

// Expressions of Nature // :: Sara-Lila :: "The biggest lesson nature has taught me recently is that you are never alone, and you are always home. I’ve been on the move and sleeping almost solely outside, and I feel so held and loved. I wake up to the joy of the trees glistening in the sunshine and sleep to the song of the birds. That love and abundance is offered to everyone, no one is excluded"
