I wrote this in a Waffle House in 1999. I was obsessed with the delicate beauty and eeriness of marionettes and wanted to express that cohesively in one place.
Always have been fascinated with puppets, dolls, marionettes, mannequins, etc.. all of the older Uncanny Valley denizens.
The bit about them 'knowing my soul' I think is a reference to the movie Dolls.
I'm not quite sure why a Pierot shows up at the end, but I'm glad he does! Thanks Kai Nobuko of Toxic Chicken!
The idea for me behind the sound of this is a mixture of baroque harpsichordy signifiers that just remind me of the beauty and filagree put into old world crafted marionettes (well even the Krofft's early work shows that I guess), and it's also filled with tons of 7th chords, why it sounds "loungey." Also why I love Steely Dan so much... and I guess also Gary Wilson, oh yeah and Shintaro Sakamoto (who also seems to love puppets). But those are just my favorite kinds of chords.. they have the most emotion and feeling in them to me.
One day there will be a video story for this, but it's a few years off.
In the meantime pick up a copy of I Left My Heart in Uncanny Valley on CD (comes with DVD size, full color, beautiful lyric book), and follow along as I create almost a full hour worth of visuals over the next few years. Or I guess if you are through with the world of physical objects you could download it for half the price of the 3D version... #loungenoir#lofi#outsidermusic#psychedelic#greenscreen#puppets#lowbrow#artpop#uncannyvalley#electronicmusic#florida#femalemusician#musicvideo#kitsch#marionettes#krofft#garywilson#steelydan#shinatarosakamoto#7thchords
Happy Birthday, Pufnstuf! The show first aired on September 6, 1969 and Puf became an instant and continued obsession. Here is an assortment of items I did in elementary school in the early 70s- A mesh weaving of one of the witches from the Pufnstuf movie’s Zap the World number, a tissue collage wall hanging of Puf, a yarn coaster, a comic book that I’m sure I colored with Bic Bananas (a classic brand of markers that were huge in the early 70s), and a doll that was the first thing I made by myself once my grandmother taught me to sew. #krofft#sidandmartykrofft#pufnstuf#hrpufnstuf#saturdaymorning#tv#tvshows#classictvshows#jackwild#1970s#70s
Flashback to a super-awkward time in middle school when my solace largely came from books. Rarely was I happier back then than when the Scholastic Book Flyers arrived and I got to order books along with the latest copy of Dynamite Magazine. I had to have this copy because it had articles on both Sid and Marty Krofft’s Land of the Lost AND Marvel Comics. #marvel#krofft#70s#scholasticbookfair

Best moment in Marty Krofft Q & A:
“I loved Dr Shrinker, and Witchypoo as a kid. Do you have plans to do anything like that, anything frightening?”
“Right now everything’s frightening. We don’t have to do any shows”
