Spending the night wild camping solo on the shores of Lake Tarawera was a personal challenge designed to test my comfort around being alone.
I spent the day exploring the lake by Kayak, visiting the Tawawera eruption memorial and Wairua Stream hotsprings as well as beautiful bays and beaches along the southern side of the lake.
As evening set in I began searching for a suitable site to camp, this proved more difficult than I expected, terrain was the main factor as much of the shore drops steeply into the lake. After checking out several contenders I settled on a cliff top site several metres above the water amongst the trees. Aside from the water view, white pumice sand beach and 4G reception, I chose the site for its flat topography and clear ground.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Conditions for the night were perfect, with no wind and a starry sky I settled into camp with a swim in the last rays of the day before roasting a few marshmallows and watching a movie. Despite a lack of sleep due to forgetting a pillow and a few sore muscles, the night was a success; being far more comfortable alone in the wild than expected.
The the sense of adventure that came out of finding my own way on this trip was so rewarding; reaffirming my motivation to continue pushing my limits in the wild and chasing the personal growth that comes with it.
What an incredible weekend #kayaking (13 miles round trip) and #camping on Caper’s Island with Lowcountry Paddlesports! It doesn’t get much better than sleeping on the beach & having the rhythmic crashing of the waves lull you to sleep or waking up in the middle of the night to the biggest moon you’ve ever seen. AND we got to share this epic experience with our best friends: Michelle & James! You never know when you’re making a memory that you’ll cherish later, but I know this weekend is full of special and memorable #moments that will become cherished memories. Life is not made up of minutes, hours, days or years, but of moments like these.
