In today’s edition of “Getting Old Sucks”, Kaplan was diagnosed with Nuclear Sclerosis, a fairly common eye condition that comes with aging, in both eyes. This means he has extreme difficulty focusing his vision on things. On top of that, it seems his right eye retina has detached and he’s lost his vision in that eye. Which would explain why he walked into a wall and a door last week and why he loses his balance when trying to go potty outside in the dark. Because he can’t see for crap. His blood pressure is fine and there’s no glaucoma, which would be the most common cause of the retina detachment. So the doctor sent off blood work to UGA to test for tick-borne illnesses, and we have an appointment Monday with a canine ophthalmologist. Meanwhile, we’re doing 4x per day eye drops in case there’s an underlying infection. But he really has no idea anything is wrong. He’s just a snoozing away on the couch.
