This morning I was feeling a bit of pain in my left leg due to a fall on Iceline yesterday, so we decided to change our plan and do Helen lake (6k out and back so 12k). Once we got to the lake Andrew @cottieshey decided to go for Cirque Peak, with my leg feeling good after the warm up I followed and I am glad I did. This moutain is offering an amazing 360° view on multiple lakes (15 we counted them) glaciers, other peaks and icefields. So we ended up doing 17k with 1100m of elevation gain. The two last days were just epic!
As a mountain professional, the mountains are more than just an office; often they're classrooms, lecture halls, dojos, retreat centers, hotel rooms, and amphitheaters where we practice our craft. •
And this craft is something that all ages can immerse themselves into the study of. Pictured here, 11 year old Quinn represents the next generation of alpinists and big-wall climbers. Much like a musician pouring late hours into mastering diatonic scales or a mathematician solving formulas and charting derivatives, Quinn here has been steadily and methodically mastering the craft of trad, alpine, and big-wall climbing. •
Methodical, passionate, and curious, he has an impressive resume, and an even more impressive selection of curated goals that he's steadily progressing on throughout the summer. •
Pictured here, Quinn and I raced up the ultra-classic Spearhead via the technical fingerlocks and granite slabs of The Barb (5.10c, IV, 1000ft). We spent the night bivouaced underneath a cave, drenched by an impressive show of thunder and rain all night, rising at first light to negotiate the wet cracks of this proud alpine wall. •
Excellent training for building courage, confidence, prudence, and good judgment in the mountains. Up next for Quinn is The Diamond on Longs Peak! Stay tuned with @coloradomountainschool as we work together with skilled climbers in expanding the boundaries of their mountain-craft. •
Here we are, midsummer in the alpine season, a prime time to spend in the terrain above treeline - what are some of your goals throughout this summer?
