MARKETS - when I started the markets at Rozelle & Bondi back in 2003 I remember thinking “gosh I don’t know if I can do this”...
15 years on and I’m still second guessing my display, my stock and myself! 2008 saw me launch at the iconic Paddington Markets on a weekly basis.
Back then I had a 1 mtr square table that had a plain black tablecloth on it, barely any stock, signage or logo. Nowadays I have 2 tables, stock that is growing and an all out display. The markets have been a great learning curve to speak directly to the clients to see their likes, dislikes and how to market my brand, and figure out where I want my business model to go.
I have met many of my current clients through the markets and although I may not remember every one of you, as soon as I see the piece I made for you and hear the story that made you connect with it I remember 😍. It has been amazing to see clients again that I have met through Rozelle, Bondi & Paddington years later, but my business has never been about making a quick buck. If that was the case I would do what a lot of people selling “their jewellery” at the market do, and design pieces that I get made overseas in unsafe and underpaid work environments. This really shits me!!! I’ve worked my ass off for years and studied both Private & Tafe courses for over 6 years over the past 20 years to get qualified as a Trade Jeweller only to have to compete with these “jewellery designers “ that have no idea about the work and technique that goes into each and every piece. Calling their pieces “fair trade “ which is another thing which is completely misleading because at the end of the day these communities overseas making the pieces that the “designers “ make a huge profit margin on, only see a small percent of the money. But these communities are hardworking and grateful for the “above award wage” - just barely which is then called “fair trade” sorry but it’s complete BS! 💩
I am very passionate about the topic of “HANDMADE” ! I have been to markets saying they are Australian made only to see sellers selling stock that is clearly made overseas. Thankyou to the @olivetreemarket for supporting my work and to Laura for capturing
