Anyway, The AC bus is The the feeder to all of the AC powered components, think of it like a power manifold. There are usually 2 separate buses, this is because AC power cannot be powered from two separate sources at the same time. The AC power is 3 phase 115v 400hz and is generated by several different sources. When the airplane is parked at the gate, external ground power is connected which supplies power to both buses. There is a generator installed in the tail of the aircraft on a small jet engine called an Auxiliary Power Unit APU that supplies power when no ground power is connected, during engine start or as a backup. Last but not least are the two identical engine driven generators. Any one of these components can power the entire aircraft, multiples are installed Incase one fails. If you loose all AC generation sources, the aircraft can be equipped with either a small Ram Air Turbine, a small windmill that deploys and generates emergency power. If the aircraft doesn’t have a RAT the aircraft batteries can also supply AC power through a static inverter unit.
This brings me to DC. The batteries are used to start the APU, the high amperage of the starter requires it. After APU start the batteries will go into idle. The charger will maintain a full charge on the batteries 🔋 while an AC source is Available. The DC bus is usually supplied power by the AC system by using several Transformer Rectifiers. TRUs. This extends battery life, and reliability.

ATA chapter 24 electrical power
I don’t know why you’re shocked, but it’s time to talk airplanes. #dadjoke ?
Tonight I’m going to briefly talk about aircraft electrical systems. Now this could be a huge series all on its own, but we’re going to be super basic tonight. That’s about all the brain 🧠 power I’ve got left.
Over the century or so that these large metal objects have learned to fly, they have steadily evolved from primitive mechanical beasts to the highly technological marvels they are today. The newer airplanes become, electrical systems are replacing heavy mechanical systems. And since we rely so heavily on electrical computers and systems to keep us in the air, redundancies must be installed to prevent flaming lawn darts 🎯
Aircraft have two types of electrical systems. AC and DC, and both these systems have backup modes of generation.
AC powers most of the aircraft’s electrical systems. This power is generated at 115volts and 400hz. Each engine is installed with its very own AC generator called an IDG. More on that another time.
DC is mainly for standby or reserve power. There are systems and sensors that run on DC, however it is mostly a backup. Aircraft usually have 1 main battery, Some have up to 3 batteries. Batteries have to have enough capacity to power the aircrafts essential emergency systems for 30 minutes or longer depending on the aircrafts ratings.
