Olympic Lifts: Part two
-
Last post I questioned the notion that Olympic lifting is necessary. I also questioned the common rationale for using these lifts, such as “for explosiveness” or “to strengthen hip drive.”
-
This post is going to go into some of the reasons NOT to use Olympic lifts.
-
🔑: Do you have adequate overhead range of motion? Meaning, can you reach your hands above your head without your ribs flaring up and sticking your bum out like Donald Duck? If not, WHY do you think you should be throwing hundreds of pounds over your head in the form of snatches and jerks? This is a great way to 1) wreck your shoulder joint and spine and 2) reinforce terrible movement. Proper overhead kinematics is FAR more important than snatch numbers for both health and performance.
-
🔑: On a similar note, you *need* the ability to extend your T-spine to catch a clean. Two big things here: first, if you lack this ROM, you’re gonna catch it like Pitkamaki used to catch his cleans which puts so much stress through the forearms and elbows it’s not even funny. Second, the spine’s gonna have to deal with some BIG forces on the catch, you’re gonna want to be in a biomechanically sound position or you’ll be saying sayonara to your spine aka your track season. (I’ve thrown out my back twice as a Jav thrower both times from cleans when I had no business cleaning).
-
🔑: Keep in mind the load you’re using. In many cases a 60% effort clean/snatch/jerk is an entirely different exercise than an 80+% effort. The dose is the poison.
-
🔑: You might point out Pitkamaki as an example for why it doesn’t matter. That strong is strong, explosive is explosive. But don’t forget he hit his PR in 2005 and slowly went downhill (along with low back issues) til he started working with Zelezny in 2011 🤔
——
Really take a step back and ask yourself if you have earned the right to Olympic lift. Part 3 I’ll talk about the awesome benefits that can come from the O-lifts 💪🏻

Olympic Lifts: Part 1
-
Olympic lifts have been pretty much accepted as a necessary part of Javelin training. Cleans, jerks, snatches, from the floor, from the hang, from blocks... there’s a ton of variations.
-
Usually, the idea is something along the lines of building explosiveness, improving hip power, or developing speed through triple extension.
-
This is fine, BUT.
-
These are extremely general statements being made about extremely technical exercises. What do I mean?
-
The snatch, clean, and jerk are all *massively* different, and yet we still use the same few words to describe our rationale for using them. This doesn’t even take into consideration the subtle differences between variations, and the technical/physical differences from person to person.
-
In addition, it seems as though we label Olympic lifts as “necessary” just because we see so many top athletes performing them with big numbers. This is quite honestly a terrible rationale for doing any exercise, much less one where you violently throw hundreds of pounds over your head.
-
Olympic lifts can be fantastic, seriously. But we have to understand what is really happening in each of the movements, ON A PERSON TO PERSON BASIS. Remember that there are two sides to every exercise.
-
As always I’m gonna remind you to look past the dogma, and start questioning your own rationale for doing these exercises. -
In part two I’ll talk about what I think better thinking might be for Jav throwers and Olympic lifts and how that might affect how we’d perform them!

What is the biggest misconception about being a thrower at your level?
-
@nadjapasternack -
“You only need physio treatment, massages and rehab training when you’re injured.” -
Well of course, you could wait until you’re injured and miss weeks or months of training. -
Or you could be clever and prevent stupid injuries by giving your body what it needs.
-
Strengthen your weaknesses, get massages, and get physio treatments. -
Throwing a stick is super tough on your body. -
Take care of it.
-
*Note from @javelin.anatomy : -
Take note young throwers! You’ve only got one body for your entire life and the javelin will slowly destroy it if you’re not super intentional and mindful in taking care of yourself. Injuries do NOT have to be a part of this sport’s culture.

What is the biggest misconception about being a thrower at your level?
-
@pearsonbenji -
I think the biggest one is that there is money and financial support in throwing. -
Obviously if you’re banging it 90m consistently you’re probably going to be doing all right, but this doesn’t happen very often 😂. -
Most of the guys are receiving next to nothing, just scraping by. So in many respects the sport is still amateur. -
When you take up javelin seriously you have to be prepared to sacrifice pretty much everything. However with the social media boom, throwers are starting to get more exposure, so in the next few years there might be more money coming in. -
In my opinion it is pivotal to have supportive friends and family, and create your own team to give yourself the best chance. If you’re on your own you’re certainly going to be up against it. -
THIS SPORT IS HARD
-
(Face in pic number 2 sums this up pretty nicely 😂)

Self Talk
——
Positive self talk is a really big topic for high level performers in all fields.
-
Positive self talk can help you reach higher levels of athletic success. Negative self talk can drag you down.
-
But here’s my problem: The fundamental basis of self talk revolves entirely around our emotions. It revolves around this idea of “self.” It revolves around our ego.
-
This is extremely limiting at best, and extremely toxic at worst. -
Break out of your box.
-
We become so ingrained in this default mode of being the center of our own existence that we forget how much more to the story there really is. That is, javelin throwing is about so much more than *you* throwing a stick.
-
In fact, none of this is about *you*. It’s NEVER about you. -
In the end, you’re made of the same carbon atoms as your Javelin. Whether you realize it or not, you are the world and the world is you. Energy does not discriminate. So when you step on the runway with the javelin in your hand, let go of the *me* mentality. You are so much more. -
Throw for your teammates. Throw for the coaches who gave you the opportunity to compete and succeed and grow. Throw for your family. Pay it back. Pay it forward. Throw to inspire. Throw because you’re inspired. See the bigger picture and connectedness behind it all.
-
You’re more than your emotions. You’re more than your fears. You’re more than whatever you think you are, but it starts with letting go of who you think you are.
-
You have to lose your “self” in order to transcend yourself. So move beyond the self talk and *think*, throw, and GROW.

Maximal vs. Optimal
——
Here’s an important question that you should really take some time to reflect on as you read this:
-
🔑: Are you willing to do whatever it takes?
——
From the time that we start playing sports we’re taught that hard work is the ticket to success. -
This is true, kind of.
-
You see, at a certain point hard work becomes a given. You won’t make it to any respectable level of competition without working hard. It separates the serious athletes from the clowns.
-
But at that point, where you’re left with only the serious, hard working athletes, what separates the good from the great, and the great, from the elite?
-
Here’s the secret: it’s NOT more hard work.
-
At this level, there’s no correlation between more work and more success. More isn’t better. *Better* is better.
-
This all comes down to a lot of what I’ve talked about on this page before: quality vs quantity, stress vs recovery, nutrition and lifestyle and personal development.
-
Like I said, the hard work is a given at a certain point. The key is the organization and targeted application of hard work to build on strengths and improve weaknesses. You’ve gotta work smart *and* hard. And by the way, smart work IS hard work. Read. Think. Learn. Grow. -
Look back to the question at the beginning of this post. Are you willing to rest? Are you willing to not throw for a while? Are you willing to sleep more? Are you willing to work on time management? Are you addicted to the grind? Do you *need* to be busy? And if so, why? This is serious stuff and you might not like your own answers. Let go of your attachments to more.
-
Forget about maximal, and start chasing optimal.
