Toro at Japanese Tea Garden (2018)

A toro is a Japanese lantern that is made of stone, metal, or wood. Prior to 794 AD, these lanterns were considered an offering to Buddha. They could only be used for lighting the pathways of Buddhist temples. During the Heian Period (794-1185 AD), toros became common in private homes and Shinto shrines.

The Heian Period describes an era where Buddhism and Taoism were at their height. The toro’s symbolism transcended spiritual spaces into private homes, bringing a sense of peace with them.
Now that they are located in public places (such as this garden), do they remain symbolically the same? In my experience, a sense peace does accompany the artifact today. I visited this place on a Sunday morning and the weather was just perfect (55β€’ with an overcast). Along with what was background to this toro, I was taken aback to 900 AD. β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

β€œTreasure Tower” at Japanese Tea Garden (2018)

Originally built for the Panama-Pacific Exposition (1915), this five-tiered Buddhist shrine is now located within Golden Gate Park, where the Shinto shrine once stood. Shinto shrine was demolished due to the high anti-Japanese sentiment of the time (WII and the concentration of Japanese and Japanese-Americans in internment camps). The Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco is now one of the city’s most trafficked tourist attractions. Although the attraction is fenced-off to tourists, it is so by the β€˜mizugaki.’ The mizugaki is the traditional picket fence to the Shinto shrine that existed before demolition. Some might view its repurpose as symbolic of keeping the original spirit of the Shinto shrine enclosed within its successor, Treasure Tower. It’s almost as if the fence protects the original spirit from outsider harm.β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” References

Buddha at Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park (n.d.). Not only is this attractive destination influenced by Japanese culture, it is also heavily influenced by Japanese religions. These include Buddhism, Taoism, and ancient Shintoism. -

In 2017, San Francisco residents that identify as Japanese or Japanese-Americans make up a total of 1.3% of the city’s entire population. Although the number of Buddhist-San Francisco residents is unknown, San Francisco is known for having some of the largest Buddhist temples in the US.

Unfortunately, the tranquility and peace you expect from a Japanese Garden is somewhat lost. Since it is the largest garden of its kind in the US, the fame and attraction the follows at times compromises silence, tranquility, and feelings of peace. Today it is more of a beautiful tourist destination than it is a devout Buddhist shrine. β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” References

SF (GOLDEN GATE PARK EDITION): There are a surprising amount of things to do in Golden Gate Park! For example, the Japanese Tea Garden is a beautiful place to visit. You do have to pay ($9 for adults and there is no student discount), but it is so nice and pretty! Parking on the weekends might be rough, but definitely worth visiting. You can drink tea and even eat some Japanese food in the garden as well, but those are extra charges. It’s fairly close to the museum area of the park (such as the California Academy of Sciences) and the Shakespeare Garden so you definitely can make the park a whole day thing! Fun fact: there are BISON in the park! Will get back to you on that in future posts 😊
