I got the chance to see Paul Dano’s directorial debut, Wildlife.
Set in the 1960’s the film follows young Joe, played incredibly by Aussie actor Ed Oxenbould, as he deals with the consequences of his parents actions, played equally well by Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal.
This film is breathtaking.
There’s so much I want to talk about, and will do soon in another SPOILER review.
For now, all I will say is that Wildlife comments on the roles that we are forced into, like when you have a child, do you instantly become parents.” You can still have your own problems, fears, and specifically your own life.
The film centres around their son Joe being a witness. His bulging, blue eyes are always watching the events and keeping us close by.
Through great camerawork and editing choices, his point of view is really reinforced to be that of an observer.
When Gyllenhaal’s character leaves for work reasons, Joe is forced into this parental role, whereas Mulligan’s character (his mother) takes on a dangerous new sense of freedom.
To sum it up, a quote that really stuck with me, “It’s probably nice to know your parents were once not your parents.”
Through physical acting, this mother and son relationship takes on a tragic, humiliating sense of shame when Joe witnesses things he does not approve of.
This reinforces this idea of roles being shoved upon us.
In this case Joe becomes the disapproving parent, and his mother becomes the embarrassed child.
This is easily the best looking film I’ve seen all year and as to be expected, Mulligan and Gyllenhaal prove to be among the best, but it was the young Australian that really surprised me.
Some of the events towards the end may be slightly rushed in an otherwise slow film, but not enough to lower my score.
There are a few key scenes I wish I could get into, and will do very soon because I can’t wait to talk more about Wildlife.
🎈Happy Birthday Maggie🎈
#MaggieGyllenhaal “Q:What do you think about the roles your brother chooses-he’s taken some physically & emotionally gruelling ones recently-& what they mean for him as an actor&person? MG: There are times when I think, knowing Jake so well, I’m glad you’re doing that. And there are other times when I’m like, Why are you doing that? When he did #SundayInTheParkWithGeorge I thought, Right on. You’re going to blow everybody away. I knew what that was going to do for his heart & mind. There are also ways in which we’re different. He’s business-minded in a way that I find inspiring. I respect his ease & understanding of the business elements of our jobs.”(Vulture)
#JakeGyllenhaal “I do this a lot with my sister, but I really feel like #TheKindergartenTeacher is an extraordinary piece of work. I don’t say this lightly about the type of work that needs to be acknowledged these days & I know you have a job to do, but I think that what she does in that film is brave beyond brave & the line that it walks throughout that entire piece is such a dangerous, beautiful line, & it’s the kind of art that someone like Jacques makes &a line that he walks, something that I think is rare right now. And the feelings it elicits from that performance, I think she is incredible. She has been so incredible & so outspoken in these times as a woman & she has always been like that, since I was a kid. I grew up in a pretty sort of matriarchal household & house full of supremely intelligent & fierce women & she has always been that. Particularly this year I think in a very kind of black & white world, she has walked a very gray line that she always has in representing something that I think is profoundly human. And if I talk about it more it will make me cry, because my sister I think is just extraordinary. She works on herself & she works on her work & she pushes herself & she is always my big sister & always will be my big sister. We have had our complications, but I am so profoundly proud of her & I look up to her to this day & I will do anything to make people know how extraordinary she is.”(GMANewsOnline) 👏👍
Morbid satire of unscrupulous journalism
20 April 2017
Interesting satire of unscrupulous journalism, brought to the morbid caricature. This film is not a masterpiece of cinematography, but it keeps the attention from beginning to end, has one of the best car chase scenes in movies where this is not the main subject, and leaves quite an impression. Jake Gyllenhaal here looks like a madman, drives an insane car like a lunatic, and either he is crazy or once again proves his envious acting skills.
Zanimljiva satira beskrupuloznog novinarstva, dovedena do morbidne karikature.

#wildlife#movie#cinema#film#jakegyllenhaal#careymulligan
