🗣 «At the final major aid station I saw a friend who saw the other two women leave 3 minutes ahead of me. I needed to go to the toilet so quickly ran in so probably made a 4 minute gap. I absolutely flew down the mountain then - except for technical trail where I made sure I kept injury free as I would have been delighted with 3rd and had no idea if the females behind me would have closed the gap when I really slowed down around 45-55K. There were switch backs so I was able to see the girls ahead at some points. Then I realised only Evelyn was still in sight so didn’t know if Anna was far ahead of her (she was very fast on the downhills all day) but then I caught up with Anna who seemed to be really struggling and I passed her on a downhill trail section. I kept pushing, fueling, hydrating. There was still about 13K to go. With about 4K to go I could see Evelyn ahead and it seemed I was closing in. This seemed to happen quite quickly and painlessly so I knew she was fatigued and then I saw her walking on the flat. She came off the trail to get water from the stream with 3k to go and I did the same - the sun was baking us and it must have been 35 degrees. I then stuck behind her through trail for a km until we were on the flat/slight decline and on the edge of the town. I knew I had enough in me to pass and sustain at this point. I focused on technique in to the finish and keeping calm as emotions were starting to run wild! I had learned all day that anything can happen in trail running so kept pushing all the way until the finish!

🗣 « Race day started with a 2.15am departure from my apartment to get to the start line. We got to a chilly Kals just after 4am and then the race started at 5am. It was dark and I went out hard, leading for the first 2kms and then kept moving between 1st and 2nd position for the first 15K. The first 12K was very steep climbing with 1500m elevation gain. It seemed checkpoints weren’t my strong point and the other two women I was racing with were better at being organised with their kit and fueling. So I found myself in 3rd place from about 15K onwards but stuck close enough to see the other two females for the majority of the race. We were quickly learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses which we then tested for the remainder of the race. By the Rudolfshutte (44K) checkpoint, I knew my weakness so sprinted off to get in a minute ahead of them so I could do my thing! We left together. Sadly I then took a fall on the next downhill and had quite a painful and bleeding hand which shook me up a bit! I also felt tired, and possibly the altitude up there at 2600m. The other two females stuck together and I a few hundred meters of climbing behind them. We then hit a snowfield 1.5km long and downhil which slowed me down and also shook me up some more so the next wet, stoney section I took very easy and focused on keeping fueled and injury free as I learned from a guy who knew the route that there still was a good 3.5 hours at least left. I couldn’t see the ladies anymore and didn’t see them from 51K until about 58K but I had seen signs of fatigue in the other women throughout the day so I knew to not give up (even though I was quite convinced I had lost any chance of a better spot than 3rd). I started to feel a lot better as we dropped down in altitude. I used my strength on the undulating trail and picked up the pace to close the gap. Compared to traditional squat, unilateral strength options (single leg exercises) are a great way of building strength whilst minimizing the load an athlete puts through his/her back.
