Oh HEYYY! In case you didn’t know we have a stunning new show here @nationalgalleryofireland and a very special education & public programme to support it 🙌 “Roderic O’Conor and the Moderns: Between Paris and Pont-Aven” covers the years 1887-1995, a short but critical phase in Irish Artist Roderic O’ Conor’s career, spent between the French capital and a rural town in Brittany which became a thriving artist colony. The exhibition examines O’Conor’s expressive signature style alongside portraits, landscapes and still-life works of other stellar modern artists including Vincent Van Gogh, Cuno Amiet and Paul Gaugin 😲
This is a glorious show and our programme takes full advantage. We have focused on the sharing of ideas and practices which took place in the Artist colonies, the professional role of the modern artists and their legacy to the world, and in particular we consider France, the time the place and the principles of the revolutionary art capital of the world at the turn of the 19th Century. ☄️
From these key themes we have devised events, workshops, courses, talks, paint outs, podcasts, art classes, an artist residence, festival collaborations, intergenerational activities, and a music response project. These are tailored for a wide range of ages and abilities and just some of the people and organizations we are working with are: @unasealy @wexfordartscentre @martintourish @thetolkahotclub @hickey.sandra @sineadfurlongclancy @andreadhoran @sanguinestyle @mickodeaartist @funpalaces @cianmcloughlinartist @katyemills @caomhanmac @sairyelizabeth ......#justsaying 😌
So get in to see the show and pick up a copy of our beaut programme or go online for a full listing. Shout out to the spectacular education team, all the NGI collaborators & programme contributors. Special thanks to @sairyelizabeth who was coerced into this particularly naff product placement shot 😆 you’re a diamond Sarah! Happy bank holiday folks!
Looking back to our Decorum project which took place earlier this year in #eastlondon
Decorum is a year-long project working with women of different generations to explore the topic of ‘good’ behaviour and create digital artworks and performances that tackle this from their perspective.
Led by professional artists to stimulate conversation and creative responses to this theme, Magic Me are working with women from across London, Peterborough and Southend (in partnership with arts organisation, Metal) in both one-off creative workshops and longer projects throughout the year. Working with younger and older women, they will explore what ‘good’ behaviour means to them, and if is it relevant to them in the 21st century.
With thanks to funders: Arts Council England, Garfield Weston Foundation and the Players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. Developed through the Open Lab scheme at Barbican Guildhall.

"Oh God, Open For Me My Heart." Acrylic on canvas. Arabic calligraphy inspired by nasta'liq and thuluth scripts. Passage from the Qur'an (Surah 20, ط ہ, Taha, Ayat 25). I started this calligraphy in spring (April 2017) after my dear Ammi (mom) made the request months prior. I was especially touched because it happened soon after, and in the context of, ongoing conversations about love and Queerness. She once asked me with a sincere tone in Urdish, "What inspired you to be Queer/assert Queerness?" I paused and responded, "Part of it has to do with you ma, your love and teachings on love".✨✨✨ I had thought I'd complete this painting within a month, but, I couldn't rush my creative rhythms, and needed to learn more about patience. The painting process saw me through my own heart openings in various and profoundly meaningful ways. I am grateful to my mom for passing on this beautiful teaching.✨✨✨ While sharing a meal with my parents this morning, I told my mom that I wanted to launch this painting as a celebration, and that I did not want to give space/associate it in any way to white supremacy, given that I had shared this passage in a speech last year on January 29th, after the brutal Québec City mosque shootings and massacre of Muslims of Colour by a white supremacist, and given that tomorrow marks a year since this brutality. My piyaree si ammi acknowledged and affirmed what I was saying, and in her way, she also welcomed me to hold celebration and grief, resilience and rage, loss and love simultaneously. And so, I take this moment to center the lives of those who are impacted by systemic violence. I choose to continue sending my love to the families who mourn their loved ones. I choose to focus on all the love - in the presence of justice, that we build within ourselves and between each other. ✨✨✨Wishing you moments of heart openings ✨✨✨Pictures with hands (photocredit Mehnaz💓): my mom Nighat, my niece Nazmeen (who provided such a sweet compliment by commenting: "the background looks like a sunset over water" ...💕💕💕) , my niece Mehnaz, and myself. 💞❤️💞 #ArabicCalligraphy#IntergenerationalArt#QueerMuslimArt#farhanajahart
