In a study of English, Italian, Polish, Russian, Lao, Cha'palaa (spoken in Ecuador), Murrinhpatha (an aboriginal language in Australia), and Siwu (from Ghana), linguists found that expressions of gratitude were actually relatively rare. Instead of verbal expressions of thanks, there is a basic stance of reciprocity, i.e. we expect people to comply with a request (which happens 7 times more than it doesn't). English and Italian speakers verbalized thanks more often than in other languages, possibly due to a stronger ideology of politeness, but not necessarily a higher degree of gratefulness. What implications does this have cross-culturally? Check out episode 17 this week to find out! Subscribe wherever you podcast! 😉

I just found bubble tea in Frankfurt and now I can confidently say my life is complete 💁🏼‍♀️ #myfavouritedrink #yummy #intercultural #frankfurtlife
~~link in the bio~~ After two years of collaboration, of transatlantic messages, of recordings made on our humble phones and in the studio, of grant writing and implementing, our album SOMOS TODOS UNIDOS is finally ready for release! We are so excited to share this album with the world. It’s been a long time in the making, with lots of work and lots of heart put into it on both sides of the Atlantic. I never could have wished for a more special outcome or a better way to dedicate my Peace Corps Service. I want to thank @hipolitosande for letting us into his musical world, for being such an open and willing artistic partner, and for his serious talent. I want to thank my brother, @count_rikulous , for the hours and hours of work he’s put into this project, recording instrumentals and mixing and mastering tracks. It wouldn’t have been possible without you. A big thanks to my fellow volunteers Ivan Gallegos and @AlisaCachoSousa for lending their talents to take our JUNTOS songs to the next level. Thank you to the Peace Corps for being open to cross-cultural artistic projects, and a HUGE THANK YOU to all who donated to my PCPP Grant that helped make the JUNTOS youth group aspect of this album (Julieta, Somos Todos Iguais, and Stop AIDS) a possibility. As we speak, Mozambique Peace Corps Volunteers are sharing these tunes with their students, youth group participants, friends, and colleagues. By harnessing music's power as an emotive educational tool, we hope to spread these positive social messages of love, tolerance, and healthy lifestyle choices throughout Mozambique to help empower our youth with knowledge and compassion. This album as a whole means a lot to all of us and has been a huge part of my personal Peace Corps journey. Please give it a listen, download if you’d like, and keep a look out for it on Spotify and iTunes some time in the near future. Much love, Ari
