Old ranches fascinate me. To be established and survive, the founders had to be great businessmen and had to have an innate ability to get shit done.
Samuel Burk Burnett was born in 1849 and would soon start one of the largest cattle operations in the state of Texas and the nation.
He became a well renowned cowpuncher, cattleman, oilman and also a great all around businessman throughout his life.
He purchased 100 head of cattle (donning the 6666 brand) when he was 19 years old. This original herd of 100 would eventually start the 6666 Ranch, which became one of the most successful family businesses in the nation.
Burnett was hands on with his approach, starting his fortune by driving cattle on trails to railcars bound for the market.
After that, Burnett saw a need for grazing lands for his cattle. So, he befriended Comanche Chief Quanah Parker and then president, Teddy Roosevelt by building contracts to purchase government and Native American owned land for grazing land.
Oil was found on his land shortly after that, thus driving up his wealth and success.
Burnett boasts an impressive resume- cowpuncher, cattleman, businessman, oilman, steward of the wild, but the most impressive aspect of him is he had the foresight and ability to get shit done. This ability lead to him building one of the most successful family operated companies in the nation.
Set aside the romance of cattle and horses and west Texas, it’s the fact that Burnett set out to accomplish a task and succeeded. His success did not come easy, at times he probably had to face challenges that his solution was not popular, but he preserved and made his goal a reality. There were times he faced issues that had probably never been faced before- the answers weren’t in the back of the book, he couldn’t rely on professors or government help. In these times, he had to duck his head, put his shoulder into it and get shit done.

What an unbelievable thing to witness. 💞 #tohaveandtoharbaugh
