PART IV BREATHING WHILE STRETCHING
This is because muscles in the abdomen and lower back help your diaphragm with the breathing process. When you exhale, these same muscles relax, making it easier to increase your stretch. If you don't breathe deeply during your stretches, your muscles don't have a chance to relax.
Every cell in your body inhales the oxygen and exhales the carbon dioxide – a process called respiration. Breathing is important because our cells constantly need a new supply of oxygen so they can produce energy – without this vital oxygen, cellular function is impaired, and damage or cell death is possible.
How do you breathe when stretching
Breathing in and out through the nose helps us take fuller, deeper breaths, which stimulates the lower lung to distribute greater amounts of oxygen throughout the body. Also, the lower lung is rich with the parasympathetic nerve receptors associated with calming the body and mind, whereas the upper lungs — which are stimulated by chest and mouth breathing — prompt us to hyperventilate and trigger sympathetic nerve receptors, which result in the fight or flight reaction.
After a minute or two of just breathing, get into position for your first stretch. Inhale as you prepare to stretch, then exhale as you bend into the stretch. Continue to steadily inhale and exhale as you hold the stretch. Inhale as you move to the next stretch, exhaling again as you push deeper into it.
The contraction and expansion of the diaphragm also helps pump toxins and lactic acid from the muscles of the torso. Increased blood flow to these muscles makes them more flexible. When you breathe deeply, your body receives more oxygen than it does when you breath shallowly and rapidly.
