"We see TransCanada’s legal threat, which requests that the RCMP enter our territory by force, as a direct challenge to the safety of our residents and an extension of the colonial violence from which we are trying to heal." New video from the Unist'ot'en Camp community about their Healing Centre – the result of years of planning and construction, and a centerpiece of their continuing work today.

Court is scheduled for Thursday, December 13th. Please follow the link in our bio to learn how to support the Unist'ot'en.

Early morning, airport, & light reading.
Appreciating "an alternative politics of recognition, one that is less oriented around attaining legal and political recognition by the state, and more about Indigenous peoples empowering themselves through cultural practices of individual and collective self-fashioning that seek to prefigure radical alternatives to the structural and subjective dimensions of colonial power" (Coulthard 2014, pg. 18)

I totally see how dream work, both individual dreaming and community dreaming, serves as an example of such a practice, connecting peoples to their own unalienable power of inner guidance and self determination. We don't need no stinkin' state recognition to dream!

LISTEN AND SHARE. “The vast majority of people that come to my talks about toxic masculinity are women or self-identifying women.
The question I ask is “why?” It speaks to a terrible truth. To live in this society Women’s safety and health requires that they know men better than men know themselves. .... There is a distinct comparison there with people of colour. We need to know white folks better than they know themselves for our own safety and health. And that’s terrifying”
And what’s the solution? The first step towards healthy masculinity is for Men (and all those who benefit from white supremacy) to develop the emotional intelligence to interrogate oneself and behaviour in relationships.” Dallas Goldtooth @for.the.wild #smashthepatriarchy #indigenoussovereignty #weareallinthistogether

"5th Night Abundance: According to the Chanukah story in the Talmud, the oil for the Temple menorah was only enough for one day, but lasted for eight days. Amidst an increasing culture of scarcity, how can we rededicate ourselves to a world of plenitude? How will we recommit to a vision of economic justice - a society that stands down the hoarding of wealth and affirms there is enough to go around for everyone? To a vision of open borders where all are welcome?" - Jewish Voice for Peace.
recommitting my struggle against capitalism in the fight for #ClimateJustice, #EnvironmentalJustice, and #IndigenousSovereignty. Ending the global human pursuit to extract every resource possible on a finite planet. Setting the success of a single, newly popularized, man-made economic model, dependent on the destruction of our 4 billion year old Mother Earth. Meanwhile ignoring and murdering the Indigenous Peoples of the land that have survived successfully for thousands of years.

We Pledge to Stand with Unist’ot’en.

The #unistotencamp, a permanent Indigenous re-occupation of Wet’suwet’en land in northern B.C., is currently on high alert. Coastal GasLink Pipeline has applied for an injunction, as well as served notice for a civil lawsuit to claim financial damages for “occupying, obstructing, blocking, physically impeding or delaying access” against Unist’ot’en camp on their own unceded territory. Instead of recognizing the collective hereditary leadership of the Wet’suwet’en, the legal notices target two individuals Freda Huson and Warner Naziel.

Coastal Gaslink’s application for an injunction will be heard on Monday December 10. Let Unist’ot’en Camp know they are not alone.

Named after a man who fought for freedom and justice for all nations of this earth. I don't know much, so feel free to enlighten me. My name is beyon wren moor. I’m a member of the collective at Lupinewood, and have worked on-site and from afar in support of the Unist’ot’en community of the Wet’suwet’en nation in so-called british columbia, canada. Next week, on December 10th, the Unist’ot’en clan faces potential removal from their unceded ancestral lands by TransCanada, the same company behind the Keystone XL pipeline.
The 8,500 square mile territory has been successfully protected by the Wet’suwet’en people from multiple pipelines over the past 8 years, during which time they have built a healing center, gardens, and a bunkhouse that sustains a sizable year-round community of Unist’ot’en and their supporters.
The attack is in the form of an injunction and civil lawsuit that—if upheld in court on the 10th—will give the canadian police immediate permission to enter their unceded land and forcibly remove the Unist’ot’en community ahead of TransCanada’s proposed fracked gas pipeline, despite clear legal precedent to the contrary.
The Unist’ot’en hereditary leadership has put out a call to action asking allies to travel to their camp before December 10th to help them hold space in the event of forced entry and eviction by the canadian police immediately following the hearing.
We at Lupinewood urge you to answer this call: to visit the camp, to become a monthly donor to the incredible work and ongoing struggle of the Unist’ot’en, and to follow this situation as it unfolds over the coming weeks/months/years.

If you drink water you are in this fight: if you can give, give, and if you can go, go!
Love and rage,

beyon and the rest of the collective at Lupinewood

This is a @justseeds / @culturestrike portfolio that draws inspiration from the powerful work of grassroots groups that are championing creative and community-based solutions to combat climate change, and resisting industrial fossil fuel projects, such as the Tar Sands projects, the Keystone pipeline, fracking operations, destructive mining practices, and the transporting and burning of toxic fuels. The featured artworks bring voices from frontline communities most impacted by global warming and destructive environmental practices to the forefront of the climate change discussion.

If you're unfamiliar with the Unist'ot'en Camp and their urgent need for support, the time is now to get plugged in. This is a fight for Indigenous sovereignty, for Indigenous healing, and it's a fight for clean water. There is no time to lose. Things are ramping up. TransCanada has been working hard to use unceded Unist'ot'en land for a proposed pipeline, and just attempted to access the territory without permission on Nov. 20th. Despite the Supreme Court ruling that backs up the fact that this is unceded Unist'ot'en territory, the police have made attempts to enter at various times as well and disregard Wet'suwet'en and Supreme Court rulings. TransCanada takes advantage of times of family hardship, such is the current situation as spokesperson Freda's partner's mom is now in home palliative care. They ramped up most aggressively when Freda's father and brother had just passed away. Even though press releases have been sent to media outlets all over about the most recent threats to Unist'ot'en people and land, this story is not making headlines. This needs to be in the public eye urgently, and if we don't share it, likely nobody will. Please spread far and wide. Follow the Unist'ot'en facebook page (www.facebook.com/unistoten) for updates and to learn how to offer other forms of support. (Info and photo from the FB page).

This is the family tree of my paternal grandfather. I'm lucky to have access to family trees that trace my lineage through the centuries.

I've learned that my family has lived on Turtle Island since the early 1600s when they came over from England. 3 of my ancestors were killed by the arrows of Native people defending their land. I've found 2 instances of my family receiving grants of stolen native land in VA and ME. One branch of my family has occupied land within the Wabanaki Confederacy for over 10 generations.

This is the story of my ancestors. How do I preach #decolonization when my blood ties me to people who murdered Native Americans + stole their land? How do I reconcile the fact that I still benefit from this plunderous past?

I think the first step is to recognize this history rather than trying to deny or absolve myself of it.

Do you know how your family came to this country? Were they immigrants? Refugees? Colonizers? Native to Turtle Island? Brought here against their will? How well do you know the story of your family? Where are the gaps? Why?

Understanding the story of our relationship to this land can help us find the role we play in moving forward.
As someone who has benefited from colonization for generations, I believe my role is to uplift the voices of Native people, direct money toward projects that support Indigenous sovereignty, and not center myself as an authority of how we should move forward.

The average American spends over $300 on #BlackFriday. Today, I'll be redirecting that money toward Maine-Wabanaki REACH, a Native-led project that is dedicated to providing education of history, intergenerational resilience, and techniques for healing to tribe members + non-Native Mainers. Keep an eye on my stories for other projects and IG accounts where you can learn more about Native issues: please tag your favorites in the comments so I can find others to support! It's not enough, it's never enough, but it's important to start somewhere.

Back at it today laying down more cover crop I between the rains. This is what I am thankful for, this is my resistance. I want to start and be a part of continued conversations and direct action that crush toxic patriarchy and build the connection and story and reality and destiny that lies at the intersection of black liberation and indigenous sovereignty. Who is down to move beyond words and create strategies and weapons of resistance that look like healing trauma, singing songs, saving seeds, sequestering carbon, believing in the power of mushrooms...and also making fun of evil colonizing trolls as them and their ways die. Jajaja. Who's with me!?!

All for capitalistic greed, the colonizing continues. Land still being stolen with no conscience or consequences. As settlers we must show up and fight for irrevocable, absolute indigenous sovereignty and the restoration of native land to its rightful inhabitants. If you live in Massachusetts, please consider getting involved with the efforts to fight this decision to steal Wampanoag land.

May we honor our Indigenous ancestors & Indigenous relatives on this day. Mexicanos, 'Latinx', we come from beautiful Indigenous peoples, we've lost some of this due to genocide & colonization, but it is in our blood & parts our culture have still survived. Our medicina, our connection to spirit, our healing traditions...may we continue to decolonize to honor the Indígena in us. May we also work to amplify the voices & experiences of our Indígena family, our Indígena friends, our Indígena community. If you are a lighter skinned 'Latinx', you experience racism, but you also have privilege. You have privilege that our indígena Brown skinned familia does not have. I have lighter skin & I have privilege that my Indigenous beautiful brown skinned abuelito didn't have. I have privilege that my beautiful brown skinned father doesn't have. I have privilege that my beautiful brown skinned brother doesn't have. It is not about feeling bad about yourself, or feeling guilty for having this privilege. I am 'mixed race' indígena with lighter skin, bc my ancestors were violently colonized by the Spaniards. It's not about feeling bad, but about using this privilege to amplify, to bring awareness & then action to these issues that affect our brown skinned indígena familia. For example, our brown skinned familia is criminalized & targeted by police more than our lighter skinned familia. Our brown skinned familia is targeted & punished by the school system more than our lighter skinned familia. Our lighter skinned familia is given more educational & job opportunities than our brown skinned Indígenx familia. It won't change if we remain silent. Let's talk about these things to create justice in our familias & communities. If you are in a position of power & are lighter skin, like me, you must use your power & status to create change & justice. More later on this important & complex topic, bc intersectionality. We need to talk about the status of our Indígenx womxn & queer familia. Follow @indigenousunity for more. Decolonizing is a journey. In solidarity, ✊🏼🙏Dr. Rosales Meza

And yet today, white settlers feast and give nothing in return except lack of access to food grown on the land we stole and continue stealing. History repeats. No thanks. Glad people are saying no. But also, not partaking is not enough. I hope someday all white settlers look back at so-called thanksgiving/taking and say, "can you believe we used to take part in a holiday that celebrates genocide?" as we put that time and money toward reparations and decolonization. While I choose not to participate in Nov 22nd and stand in solidarity with Indigenous people. I encourage us to do more this year. Check out my Story Highlight “DECOLONIZE” for direct action steps that you can take to support our Native communities.
.
I also want to honor those who struggle during this time of the year due to lack of access, who may be disconnected from loved ones, forced to work, mis gendered, fat shamed and made to endure all kinds of torment for the sake of being around “family”.

May you find peace and comfort during this time of the year.

Carbon trading mechanisms allow the fossil fuel industry to continue to emit carbon into the atmosphere, as well as devastate the health of communities living near extraction sites, infrastructure projects and refineries.
.
Tropical forest offsets impact Indigenous people who have protected their living forests for thousands of years and have been shown to be ineffective & divide communities. Chief Ninawa, from the Amazon in Brazil, Ana Valadez from Chiapas, Mexico; and Isaac Osoume from Cross River State, Nigeria will be at the rally and Board meeting to speak to the dangers that TFS would bring to their communities.
.
The tropical forest offsets that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is promoting are false solutions in light of the recent Intercontinental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report which indicates that to prevent climate catastrophe the world must dramatically cut emissions at source in the next 12 years.

You are invited to join us at the CARB meeting on November 16th to say NO to the Tropical Forest Standard (TFS) for a rally at 7:30am. The TFS is the second item on the agenda.

This is the most precious object I took with me from Indigenous ComicCon! This limited edition book from Weshoyot Alvitre. It’s her visual exploration of the story of Toypurina who was a medicine woman in the Tongva tribe and was a leader in the revolt at the San Gabriel Mission in 1785.
Weshoyot drew each page on each day in the month of October and posted them to Instagram. But then she printed them all out and bound them by hand in a deerskin cover and burnished the title into the cover. The whole effect is heart-stoppingly stunning.

BIRTH AND MOTHERHOOD AS A CEREMONY ~
“Indigenous women view birth and motherhood as a ceremony”. Nicolle Gonzales, Navaho midwife.

One of the big myths about indigenous women’s healthcare is that better outcomes can occur if they will move out from their remote communities to birth in major urban facilities. However, studies show that hospitalization of birth of indigenous women does not consider traditional values, and exposes severe prejudices and inability to embody cultural perceptions of birth. Birthing in many indigenous cultures is preformed in a communal way, through ceremony, ritual and celebration. Himba women have learned the sacredness of midwifery through their ancestral mothers. This innate knowledge has been passed on from generation to generation. Himba midwives have mastered the skill of eliciting normal birth, an art form that is acquired through apprenticeship and intuitive experience.

Good news yesterday. . . A federal judge rescinded the presidential permit of the KeystoneXL Pipeline and issued an injunction stopping all construction of the tar sands project!
And my weekend read is Recovering the Sacred by Winona LaDuke. This is a powerful, smart, eye-opening book which “honors the vision and capability of indigenous peoples as they work to recover from the ravages of the past and to create a path toward ecological and cultural integrity.” I bought it at the wonderful Bluestockings Bookstore.

The For Freedoms project transforms Norman Rockwell’s depictions of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s 1941 address to Congress, which articulated FDR’s vision of the four basic human freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Through dozens of iterations of Rockwell’s original four paintings, the 82 images attempt to reflect the immeasurable diversity of American identities today. The images have recently been featured in Time Magazine and are part of the largest creative collaboration in our nation's history, appearing throughout all fifty states. More info at forfreedoms.org

Though the ground fight against the Dakota Access pipeline project has ended, the defense of those who stood up against injustice continues.
——- “The #NoDAPL movement was one of the most inspiring environmental events of the last few decades. It brought thousands of people to the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in opposition to the pipeline. It has been called the largest gathering of Indigenous tribes in over a century. It garnered international attention and raised awareness of the dangers of pipelines and the importance of Indigenous sovereignty.” #nativeamericanheritagemonth

We can dream healthier ways of relating to one another and all of the beings in the ecosystems around (and inside of) us. Ignoring the issue does not solve it, does not change history. How can we dream healthier futures? To be a perpetrator of problematic ideologies and histories is an indicator that you also have been harmed by the ‘legacy’ being handed down to you. Maybe you don’t have all the answers, but you can chose a different path, with humility and strength. You can chose a journey of learning that offers something healthier to those around you and who come after you. You can heal, you can work to heal your lineage, to be an ancestor worth looking up to. .

So today is Election Day in the Occupied land of Cemanahuac / Turtle Island whose current regime/ oppressors call themselves USA . It gets complicated when people ask you to participate in a system that does nothing to help your communities and when indigenous land is still stolen and under occupation but I like to view voting as a harm reduction effort. Voting won't immediately dismantle the patriarchy, white supremacy or systemic racism in the US but it's important to have your voice heard. If you decide to vote or not just remember that voter suppression is real and for those that are able to vote please do your part to help marginalized communities in any way shape or form. Immigrants, Womxn, reproductive rights, sex workers, trans folx, impoverished folx and so many marginalized communities are under attack. This page won't participate in gas lighting techniques or shaming others but if you are able to vote think about sending a big middle finger to the current regime, fuck the patriarchy and don't let these old white conservative men control more of the world than they already do. Do your part to fight back, speak out and let's give power back to the people ✊🏽. #whereisjenny #vote #electionday #ivoted #stolenland #occupation #indigenousrights #indigenoussovereignty #transrights #lgbtq #communistrevolution #revolution #change #harmreduction #powertothepeople

I'd been seeing Jill Lepore in the press a lot because of her recent publication of These Truths, so I decided to go back to revisit one of her old hits! The Name of War: King Philip's War and the Origins of American Identity offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of mid-to-late seventeenth century New England. Lepore dissects the myriad ways in which language conditions our collective memory of conflict with great aplomb. Amid Trump's hypocritical posturing on the #caravanamigrante , Americans would do well now to remember that this country was built on a foundation of indigenous bones. Lepore leaves no doubt that the colonists exploited the conflict as an opportunity to wage a war of extermination. Like genocidaires at all times and in all places, the colonists pled self-defense. Here we are, almost 350 years later, still on stolen land, still rehashing the same issues. #indigenoussovereignty

Day 1 of Indigenous Comic Con was great! Interesting panel discussions. And I met some really amazing people! Including . . . Mia Casesa who made the stunning art on my 3-day pass, and Josh Jones who did the “Let’s Fuck Shit Up” piece, and the super talented cartoonist Ricardo Cate who did the painting of the moon landing! I’m excited for Day 2 to begin! So many more people I want to meet! And for the record, the sunsets and sunrises out here are breathtaking!

An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States seems like a good place to start educating myself and debunking the myths of “multiculturalism” and “The First Thanksgiving”. Personally, I’d rather think of November as Indigenous Sovereignty and Self-Determination Month. This book is a favorite at Bluestockings Bookstore, if you too are looking to learn something this month.

The awesomely talented @neebinstudios painted this watercolor of me. One of the most important aspects of my work is being able to nourish the careers of young Indigenous designers such as Neebinnaukzhik. They, of course, do all the hard work of Indigenous sovereignty building. I am lucky that every once in a while I get to offer them a platform for recognition. Thank you Neebin for your talent and your heart! I am humbled by your kindness. #happyhappyjoyjoy #respectfuldesign #decolonizedesign #indigenoussovereignty #indigenousdesign gratitude

**NOTE** this post was initially viewable to Black, Brown and Indigenous folks only. But after receiving consent from the author of these words. I decided it needed to be shared in a more publicly format:
—
“BIPOC, can we lovingly (but firmly) have a conversation about decolonization? Unfortunately, variations of this important term are being treated like a buzzword in certain communities on this continent. However, something needs to be understood.
.
Unless your organization/movement makes Indigenous sovereignty and the destruction of America one of your main platforms, YOU ARE NOT DECOLONIZING ANYTHING. If you’re in Africa, and your movement/organization doesn’t have Black African sovereignty as a main part of your platform, YOU ARE NOT DECOLONIZING ANYTHING.
.
Decolonization isn’t just de-centering Western standards. It isn’t just believing in your heart that BIPOC life has value. It isn’t Indigenous feminism. It isn’t Black capitalism. It isn’t Asian anti-gentrification efforts. It is the recognition of unconditional sovereignty and the surrendering of all resources and lands on this continent into the control of Indigenous people. It is the recognition of unconditional sovereignty over all African lands and surrender of all resources on the continent into the hands of the Black people of that continent.

If you’re not making that your main effort, you may be doing vital work, but it isn’t decolonization.”

**NOTE** this post was initially viewable to Black, Brown and Indigenous folks only. But after receiving consent from the author of these words. I decided it needed to be shared in a more publicly format: — “BIPOC, can we lovingly (but firmly) have a conversation about decolonization? It is the recognition of unconditional sovereignty over all African lands and surrender of all resources on the continent into the hands of the Black people of that continent. . If you’re not making that your main effort, you may be doing vital work, but it isn’t decolonization.” - the brilliant Chasity Phillips
