Since 1995 I have been listening to and taking part in the conversation surrounding cannabis (including hemp). I went to law school with the specific purpose of being best situated to help legalize cannabis. I was overjoyed to work as the Outreach Director for the successful Campaign to Legalize, Tax, and Regulate Marijuana in MA in 2016, and even happier to sit on the state’s first Cannabis Advisory Board as a gubernatorial appointee. While the conversation is far from over (we have yet to even coming close to achieving the mandates surrounding equity in market participation for #pocs #women #veterans #disabled adults, #indigenouspeoples, and #lgbt persons) we cannot overlook this significant milestone in our present history. That day of legally purchasing cannabis with nothing more than a valid ID - the day we’ve long discussed and dreamed of, is finally here. And I for one am f*ckin psyched!

Time travel? It is possible! See, feel, sense, and touch Mayan and Spanish colonial culture as they were centuries ago. Experience Mesoamerica. ▪
▪
Mesoamerica, part of the heart of Central America, is represented by a variety of ethnic groups and ancestries making it one of the most culturally diverse regions on our planet. Coupled with a magnanimous geographical terrain of rainforests, rivers, lakes, mountains, volcanoes, roaring oceans and tranquil turquoise seas, it makes for one hell of a place to experience and explore.  Many of the region’s colonial towns and indigenous villages have much of the same characteristics they had over 100 years ago.  Come witness firsthand ancient history living along side its modern descendants.

Have you ever been sideswiped by such a striking beauty that your lose your breath? Like, literally just forget to breathe? That happened to me in the Sierra Nevada ⛰⛰ in northern Colombia when I literally ran into these two breathtaking little Kogi girls, with jet black hair, walking by themselves down the mountain. We were face-to-face...staring...and the white woman with the blonde hair smiled. I also caught my breath (eventually). Without saying a word, and my eyes filled with tears of God-like, pure beauty, we parted. The Kogi are the last surviving civilization of the Inca and Aztec and they believe that they live at the 💗 of the world and they are Mother Earth's guardians (someone has to be these days!). Through deep meditation, ritual offerings, songs, and prayers carried out along a network of interconnected sacred sites, the Mamos (Kogi priests) follow the law of caring for the Sierra Nevada—thus maintaining the equilibrium of life for their sacred mountains, and the entire 🌎. #IndigenousPeoples #Kogi #Arhuaco #Wiwa #Kankuamo #pachamama #Aho #meditation #ritual #MotherEarth #sacredsites #photography #nationalgeographic #environmentalprotection #climatechange

The wind-blasted landscape of Colorado Plateau is permeated by relics of the past. Evidence of human habitation in the greater Zion area dates back at least 10,000 years.
From the Ancestral Puebloan and Fremont cultures (300 BC - 1225 AD) to Southern Paiute cultures (1250 AD - Present) this area has a bountiful legacy.
Time and happenstance are continuously revealing archeological sites and artifacts. Each new discovery is opportunity for insight into our origins...

The government is strongly pushing for the construction of more large dams including Pulangi Mega Dam V in North Cotabato and Bukidnon, the Kaliwa or Laiban Dam in Quezon and Rizal, the Jalaur Dam in Panay, Balog balog Dam in Tarlac, monopolized minihydro power projects in the Cordillera, the Karayan Dam in Kalinga and many others. Already, there is widespread opposition by IPs organizations, communities and their advocates because of serious threats posed vy these dam projects. Another concern is that these dams will be constructed without the FPIC of IP communities.

The Atakapa-Ishak are indigenous people who live along the Gulf of Mexico and are traditional fishers and shimpers. 💜Because early tribes did not have any sort of official education or schools like we do, theyre children were expected to learn. Boys followed the men around, and were taught how to hunt and other things. On the other side, girls followed the women around and learned to do traditional women's work like making baskets, working on the fields etc.

This is Christy. Named for my friend, @christy_broy, whom I imagine she resembles.
.
Christy is fibre art and came in a damaged frame. She was one of a pair, though her companion was too damaged to salvage. I was able to take the intact frame of the damaged piece & move Christy into it. I removed her destroyed matte and was pleased to find an impression of it left thanks to sun exposure.
.
This is one of the few fibre pieces I wholeheartedly embrace in my home. I'm terribly sensitive to environmental allergies, so keeping anything that accumulates dust is an exercise in selflessness 😉
.
(It would be completely appropriate to levy a special sideeye at my love for my many furry pets and my dirtroad address at this point 😅)
.
Anywho (you can sideeye me for that too 😒) more introductions to follow. I hope you like invented backstories!

You have two entities that have the same if not equal vested Authority .

Nation/state soveriegnty ...institutional sovereignty

The #CISPESWaterTour is in full swing. Last night at the @peoplesforumnyc, Salvadoran water defense organizer Karen Ramirez discussed the decades-long water privatization fight that has escalated to historic levels this year with presidential elections looming. The social movement in El Salvador has been in the streets for months and will not relent until water resources are democratically controlled by the people--not hoarded by big business--and clean, safe water is guaranteed as a human right to all Salvadorans.
The tour moves to DC tonight, 11/15 and Sat 11/17 (see flyer in earlier post). Join us! .

Love must be unconditional; 3 of 7 teachings.
The Eagle represents love because of its unique relationship with the Great Spirit (Gitchi Manitou); Only the Eagle has the ability and strength to fly higher than any other animal, therefore placing it closer to Gitchi Manitou than all others. Eagles are loving parents and teachers to their offspring, protecting them and guiding them. An Eagle's feather represents Gitchi Manitou's love for us and our need for a greater understanding of ourselves and each other. Indigenous people hold the Eagle feather close to their heart and consider receiving an Eagle feather to be one of the greatest gifts. The teaching we must learn is to not only love oneself, but love all life, unconditionally, as we walk our paths in our day-to-day.

Question écrite n° 07564 de Mme Esther Benbassa (Paris – CRCE)

30 Natives in 30 days
Day 14: Redbone

Redbone is an all Native American rock group formed in 1969 with member including Pat Vegas, Lolly Vegas, Peter DePoe and Robert Anthony Avila, his stage name being Tony Bellamy. Pat and Lolly Vegas are brothers from both the Yaqui and Shoshone tribes, Peter DePoe is Southern Cheyenne, Turtle Mountain Chippewa, and Siletz and Tony Bellamy is also from the Yaqui tribe. The group formed as brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas were inspired to form an all Native American rock group. Pat and Lolly Vegas had already achieved some success in their own band having released various albums and appearing on T.V. shows. Under the newly formed group, Redbone, the two continued to have success. Redbone First achieved worldwide success with their single “The Witch Queen of New Orleans” that reached no. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band biggest break came, however, with their 3rd single, “Come and Get Your Love” which reached no. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song remained on the charts for 24 weeks as it became certified Gold. The song has recently regained success as it was included in the 2014 hit marvel movie “Guardians of the Galaxy”. In 1973 the band released their single, “We Were All wounded at Wounded Knee” alluding to the massacre of Lakota People at Wounded Knee in 1890. The song reached no. 1 in The Netherlands but did not reach the charts in the US as it was initially withheld from release and banned by several radio stations due to “lyrical controversy”. Pat Vegas is the only remaining member still with the group and continues to tour in the United States and Canada. In 2018 the band headlined along with the Black Eyed Peas at the Los Angeles City Hall for Indigenous Peoples Day.

This week’s debate - Cultural Appropriation / Appreciation .
Is it ever appropriate to adopt traditions from another culture? .

What is the difference between appropriation and appreciation? .
.
. ****Rules****
FUCKING READ THEM

This is the internet. Civility is dead. HOWEVER, name calling and general dickheadedness will not be tolerated. Obviously cursing is allowed. (Examples:
Okay - that is a fucked up opinion! ✅
Not okay - You’re a fucking idiot! ❌)
This is pretty simple stuff.
1. No racism, bigotry, sexism, name calling, hate speech, homophobia, transphobia, anti-semitism, etc... (If I missed something here, please let me know.) Any of this behaviour will result in your BANISHMENT from commenting without notice.
2. Tag @MadLibMom if you witness any of the above. There’s a good chance if you report to Facebook, nothing will happen.
3. The purpose of this debate is to rationalize and expand on ideas in a safe environment. Trolls will be found and they will be banned.

4. If your sources are not reputable, expect to be fact checked. Just fucking snopes that shit before you post it.

5. If you’re thinking about posting, “Not all men...” don’t. Just don’t.

That’s it, (until someone does something fucked up and we have to start adding rules.) Good luck.

Visiting Kasepuhan Karang in the District of Lebak, Banten Province, West Java. Kasepuhan Karang's territory is 1.008,22 Hectares. It is one of 18 indigenous communities received their rights to their customary forest back from the government claim, based on Constitutional Court Ruling No.35/2012 on Customary Forest. From the early 1920s, their forest had been in the control of the Dutch colonial, which then passed on to Jawatan Kehutanan (early Indonesian Ministry of Forest) on 1963, to Perum Perhutani (a state-owned forest company) on 1978, and last to the Halimun Salak National Park in 2003. Under these institutions’ control, and especially under the latter one, the community could not access their forest freely, even criminalized for taking firewood that fell to the ground naturally from the trees. This hard time has put the community into uncertainty that forced them to look for different jobs because the extent of one’s farmland was shrinking. Given the situation that they have low education level, women were forced to leave their family to become domestic workers overseas because other jobs will need further requirements on skills and knowledge whilst young generation detached from the agrarian life because managing their forests is troublesome works, at least seen through legality perspective. The latter group often migrate to urban areas and work in non-formal sectors with low-income. Now, after they have the legal communal right to manage their customary forest, some of the youth are coming back to their community, working as farmers, continuing the agrarian tradition of their ancestors. Other youths are now involved in managing their newly established forest ecotourism. #Kasepuhan #KasepuhanKarang #Lebak #Banten #ecoturism #forest #ricefield #foodsovereignty #indigenouspeoples #customaryforest #recognition #LandRightsNow!
