โ€[...] I thought that I had tasted the bitterness of poverty in a "first world country", that growing up lower working class made me familiar with the coldness of the winter, the stale taste of day old bread, the violence and dysfunction that so often comes with poverty, and the utter lack of a sense of belonging in this world. I knew I would never be able to comprehend the hardship of poverty in so called "third world countries" but I thought I had seen the heart of darkness that is poverty in the western world. Girl, was I wrong. I feel illiterate, unable to express to what extend the historical trauma, the enthnocide and genocide has shaped Indian Country. When I say "Indian Country" I don't refer to a physical place necessarily, I refer to the population of all Natives that have been suffering. Sometimes I think of it as an constant downward spiral: Think of a Native woman, if she won't be raped in her life, chances are that someone she loves will be because 1 in 3 Native women will be in their life. The unbearable happes and she wants to report the crime, let the forensic evidence be collected. She is traumatized and now it might take her up to three hours to get to the next clinic. That is if she has a car or gas money. Chances are high that she won't. Native women earn about 50 cent to the dollar a white man makes. She gets to the clinic and can't be sure if they even have a rape kit, let alone handle the evidence correctly. If it happened on a reservation and her perpetrator was non-Native, the tribe cannot really sue the man. The case will be handed to the federal government. And you know that it is far less likely that when you are Native your case will end in a conviction. He might come back and haunt the reservation. There a serial rapist out there like him. She goes back to her home and wants to see a mental health professional.ย But there is none because the infrastructure on your reservation is so bad or because they have no appointments or can't really help you with your problems. You need to suppress your trauma and that is why you start drinking...---You get the picture. [...]โ€œ (Full post on my blog. Link in bio.)

Posted @withrepost โ€ข @riseindigenous ๐Ÿ†• T-Shirt โšก๏ธWe love the joy and beauty Indigenous womxn bring to the community. @tishxrico (lead singer of the hardcore band @withxwar) was kind enough to model our newest re-release t-shirt from our subversive #DecolonizeFeminism series, which is a refusal to credit White Feminism as the basis of the Feminist movement in the colonized United States.

Indigenous Matriarchs/Feminists have resisted heterpatriarchal settler colonialism since 1492. Indigenous scholars posit that the first First Wavers and Suffragettes were actually influenced by Indigenous Matriarchs who were respected in their tribes at the time of colonial contact. Letโ€™s not forget that the Queens of Europe were just as vicious and motivated by patriarchy as the Kings who tyrannized entire countries for centuries. It is no coincidence that contact with Indigenous Matriarchs would inspire this type of rebellion and crusade for equality.

Meet Elizabeth "Lyda" Burton Conley of the Wyandotte Nation, fierce protector of Native land, first women lawyer to be admitted to the Missouri and Kansas Bar and the female Native plaintiff to lead a case before the Supreme Court: Her case was the first on record to argue that Native burial grounds are under federal protection and that descendents of tribes involved in treaties made with federal governments held rights to the benefits of said treaties. Her case focused on the Huron Place Cemetery which despite being protected under a the 1855 had multiple times been under threat of unapproved development by the US government, a process which would have included removing the bodies of those buried in the cemetery and then selling the land for federal profit. Even after she lost her case she stayed on the Huron Place Cemetery Lands where her ancestors were buried and guarded it with a double barrel shotgun. And when Congress approved the sale of the grounds in 1906 she filed injunctuon to stop the sale.
Though she died in 1946, her tireless work paid off at least for the cemetery, which was recognized as a culturally historic burial ground in 1998.
Lyda was amazing She spent her entire life fighting for the land and history of Native people working vigilantly both in and out of the system. But today Native peoples like those fighting in the Atchafalaya Basin are fighting just like Lyda did for the respect and honor of their sovereign land. Don't forget these battles are not just the battles of past heroes like Lyda, they are the ongoing struggles of your friends and neighbors.

I said I would start posting more pictures of myself doing what I love - making change. It only makes sense to start with Alaskan Native Sisterhood. I gratefully and humbly stand on the backs of the matriarchs who came before me. But I also fearlessly and persistently make sure to see to it that their efforts weren't for nought. The Sisterhood formed a hundred years ago to be proactive in the interest and civic leadership of our Alaskan Natives and is the oldest native social justice group. Our women have been leading the way for a long time. Had the priviledge to share some thoughts and read two of my poems at the Dimapur launch program of 2018 16 Days Campaign to End Violence Against Women. Wearing my Sรผmi Lotรผsรผmini with my cousin's blouse & @lorenzas_by_nzano earrings. A powerful & moving event learning about the ground realities of Violence Against Women in our state. The highlight of the event was listening to Dr.M.Sashi Jamir stress the need for men to join with women to work together to eliminate this evil. It's not just a 'women' thing, it's about all of us and the world we are making for our children. #endviolenceagainstwomen #womensupportwomen #sรผmi #indigenoustextiles #supportlocal #handmadejewellery #madeinnagaland #womenempowerment #feminist #indigenousfeminism

Sopfรผnuo is an Angami folktale about a woman from Rรผsoma village. Unhappy with her marriage, Sopfรผnuo leaves her husband and home with her infant at night. Her villagers see a torch moving through the forest. When she does not reach her village, they go in search of her & find two stones - a long & a small. Taking these to be Sopfรผnuo & her child, they drag the stones back to their village where they stand to this day. That she exercised some agency to leave her husband but that she was conveniently turned to stone before she could become the teller of her own tale. That her villagers did not reject her or the stones, instead brought them back & enshrined them within the village. That the stones stand to this day, silently speaking of the options available to women unhappy in marriage. These are the reasons I chose Sopfรผnuo as the warp onto which i wove poems about marriage, motherhood, about Naga women's negotiations with their sexuality, bodies & power within the framework of patriarchy.
Ironic that in narrative landscapes of grey, our Angami ancestresses developed one starkly black textile - Lohe & one clearly white textile - Lorha Mhosรผ. But textiles speak with greater complexity than their appearance. So to pay tribute to the range of intentions we will never know, I chose to wear a Lohe for my Kohima release & a Lorha Mhosรผ shawl for my Dimapur launch. Wore a Bornali mekhala from @keneinuo - my first all black mekhala gifted to me on the occasion of my Kohima book release, an off shoulder gingham blouse & @juvinihandmades earrings.

From the highly successful digital zine @indigenousgoddessgang, celebrating the reclaiming of indigeneity, to the nations first Native birth center, and to a start up that emboldens Native women to be business owners and social entrepreneurs, @nativewomenlead โ€” we are so grateful for these initiatives that are truly smashing the patriarchy brought forth by colonization

โ€œHere are three Indigenous led projects that center Indigenous feminism and that hold patriarchy accountable, not only outside of Indigenous communities, but also within our own communities because letโ€™s be clear, patriarchy did not stop on the boundaries of reservations or tribal territories. Sadly, these systemic norms have also impacted our men, our tribal governement and even our womenโ€Šโ€”โ€Šwe call this lateral oppression. That is why these projects and these individuals must be supported, followed, and celebrated for their brave work in the worldโ€

That is why for #IndigenousPeoplesDay  we are highlighting three womxn and femme led projects that center Indigenous feminism, the cure, if you will, to systems like patriarchy and colonization โ€ข From the highly successful digital zine @indigenousgoddessgang, celebrating the reclaiming of indigeneity, to the nations first Native birth center, and to a start up that emboldens Native women to be business owners and social entrepreneurs, @nativewomenlead โ€” we are so grateful for these initiatives that are truly smashing the patriarchy brought forth by colonization โ€ข โ€œHere are three Indigenous led projects that center Indigenous feminism and that hold patriarchy accountable, not only outside of Indigenous communities, but also within our own communities because letโ€™s be clear, patriarchy did not stop on the boundaries of reservations or tribal territories. Sadly, these systemic norms have also impacted our men, our tribal governement and even our womenโ€Šโ€”โ€Šwe call this lateral oppression. That is why these projects and these individuals must be supported, followed, and celebrated for their brave work in the worldโ€ โ€ข #indigenousfeminism  #indigenousrising  #smashthepatriarchy
The Womenโ€™s Revolutionary Law came about through a woman named Susana and #ComandantaRamona traveling to dozens of communities and to ask the opinions of thousands of women. This is Toypurina of the Tongva Nation: She was a medicine woman and is popularly known as the" Indigenous Joan of Arc" who was instrumental in the 1785 revolt against San Gabriel Spanish Mission. At the time of the revolt missions encroached on the lands of numerous tribal nations in the area, exploited the labor of their people, and proselytized for their conversion to the Roman Catholic Faith. Toypurnia's role was crucial both in her support as respected leader during the development of the revolt and her leadership during the actual attack on the mission.

Though the revolt was unsuccessful and she was apprendhended, according to transcripts of her interrogation, she kicked over the stool offered her refusing to sit as she delivered her testimony saying, "I hate the padres and all of you, for living here on my native soil, for trespassing upon the land of my forefathers and despoiling our tribal domains . . . I came [to the mission] to inspire the dirty cowards to fight, and not to quail at the sight of Spanish sticks that spit fire and death, nor [to] retch at the evil smell of gun smoke -- and be done with you white invaders!" She was found guilty, exiled and forcibly converted for her role in the revolt but serves as an inspiration to the Native peoples of the American Southwest where she is remembered as a spiritual matriarchal leader, fierce warrior and martyr. /////////////////////////////// Feeling so invigorated by so many of the election results last night but particularly by Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland who will be the first Native American Congresswomen. Though largely ignored or exchanged for romanticized ideas of Indian princesses historically Native women have been leaders and fierce protectors of their communities. I cant tell you how proud I am to come from a family of fierce Mohawk women and this month Ill be celebrating Native American Heritage Month by creating portraits of some of my favorite historical Native women, starting with Toypurnia of the Tongva Nation.

๐Ÿ“ท 2015. Self-Care Sunday โ€œWhat I resist persists and expends my energy. I instead use my energy to open up to alternate possibilities, and a new way of living.โ€
๐ŸŒ…
I have to work on this daily: Keep your dreams, but surrender the one thing you donโ€™t have and donโ€™t need to have: motherfuckinโ€™ control. What will happen to you is beyond you. What happens within you is your power, and thatโ€™s the power you amplify when you release the need to control what happens to you. Now breathe. I still have anxiety but sometimes I just have to let go. Stay creating and focus on me. Self care isnโ€™t selfish.
โ˜๏ธ ๐ŸŒž
Fuck that anxiety because your obsessing over unknown. Trust your ever evolving life will be amazing!
โ€ข
Keep the friends, family, and partners who encourage growth and inspire you to be a better you but detach if their frequency is less then yours. Let that shit be homie.

Indigenous Feminism is an actual thing. Native womxn of my generation are stepping into mainstream spaces with some very important #NativeTruth(s). I do not separate my Indigeniety from my womanhood or my politics. Iโ€™m working on keeping the culture alive and fresh, friend; itโ€™s a part of my writing, itโ€™s a part of my comedy and it is the core of my activism. My identity exists in a lot of mostly white spaces and for a long time Iโ€™ve dealt with it silently. But our community strives to be #InvisibleNoMore and as a part of that, I promise to talk freely from my Native POV in next seasonโ€™s podcast. .

"I believe that colonialism had substantial impacts on Native women's leadership. I think most scholars agree that the overwhelming result of colonialism has been to try to acculturate Native peoples to the Anglo society's norms. This means that acculturation politics - which in the United States included military-style boarding schools, the suppression of Native languages, the suppression of Native religions and enforced Christianity, the suppression of Native economies and the inculcation of forced dependency (a welfare economy), and supplanting traditional governments and judicial systems with structures modelled upon Anglo governance - took on similar values and norms to those of Anglo-American society, including gender hierarchies and systems of oppression."
