UPDATE: Sold out 😱 A massive THANK YOU for each single order coming in over the last couple of weeks. I am basically over the moon receiving such great feedback ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Candle making started out of a hobby hoping to bring some shine and scent into other people homes. While working full-time I love the quiet moments during a day off to create and label my candles and to prepare them for shipping. Therefore a big SHOUT 🤗 @etsyde to offer the opportunity to create and get in contact with people who also love to build a community and support small independent labels. THANKS - MERCI - DANKE 🙏 🙏

In Interview :: Gondwana with Matthew Halsall
Founded in 2008 to shine a light on the emerging talent heard in the local clubs, @gondwanarecords has grown into a truly international record label releasing albums by @gogo_penguin , @porticoquartet , @mammalhands , @allysha_joy , @stuffperiod , @philfrancemusic , @matthewhalsallmusic & The Gondwana Orchestra, @noyaraomusic and @caoilfhionnrose. They recently turned 10 and celebrated with anniversary shows in London, Tokyo, Berlin and Manchester.
For our new interview series, we sat down with the label founder ahead of having Gondwana join us at our London market edition at BBC Music @introducing_live at @tobaccodock from Nov 8-10. Read the full interview on our FB! :: How did Gondwana start? :: The decision was inspired by the amazing wealth of talent I’d discovered in my home city of Manchester. Being a jazz trumpeter/composer I remember spending a lot of time at Matt & Phreds Jazz Club (which at the time was run by saxophonist @mattthesax), and the musicians he booked were all super heavy, and I remember thinking it would be great to get some of these cats into the studio, and so it began. :: It's the label's 10th anniversary! What's been the biggest success? :: That we are celebrating 10 years in business and that we have a beautiful diverse roster of artists!
In the beginning we had very little money, but lots of energy and ambition and I have to thank all the musicians, engineers and people who have helped us along the way. :: Any advice for new independent labels? :: Remember to stay true to releasing music that you love and to be patient in the overall growth of the label. The foundations are the most important parts, so don’t rush any decisions or try to cut any corners in the beginning. :: Introducing Live is an event for young people who are aspiring artists or have a particular interest in the music industry. Are you excited to meet and share your experience with them? :: Yes it’s always nice to meet new people who share an interest in music. I remember really valuing these types of events when I started out and I hope I can add value and offer some good advice and support.
Come and join us as we celebrate music and Independent Record Labels when Independent Label Market comes to Copenhagen.
We promise you there will be loads of fun, great people to meet and amazing music to discover. We may even bring a brand new album that is not even released yet.
Hope to see you there.
In Interview :: Strut
Ahead of our London market edition at BBC Music @introducing_live at @tobaccodock from Nov 8-10 (>> http://bit.ly/ILMBBCINTRODUCING <<), we sat together with @strutrecords head honcho Quinton Scott. Read the full interview on our FB! ::::::: What made you start Strut?
I was running a similar compilation label for Demon Music during the ‘90s. I could see there was heavy demand for African rare grooves, original breakbeats and documenting some of NYC’s original underground disco clubs so I took the plunge in early 1999.
The label's biggest success?
Probably the first ‘Nigeria 70’ album which was the first album to really dig deep in the Lagos archives for original ‘70s Afro-funk and Afrobeat. We recorded a full audio documentary with it which I think still serves as a great intro to the music. Best sellers for us were the first ‘Disco Not Disco’ album compiled by @djjoeynegro and Sean P and the ‘Larry Levan Live At The Paradise Garage’ mix album, both released around the millennium.
Any advice for new independent labels?
Yes, I would say watch your cashflow. Most new labels know their market, but managing cashflow as releases start to build up is the main challenge. I would say don't start too fast and overstretch too quickly. Also, don't be afraid to be different and go against the flow creatively - I am working with @onthecornerrecords who are really inspirational, forging a completely fresh path in their approach to releasing African and Latin-based music and it is paying off for them. If you have a unique vision, I always think that will be noticed over time far more than a label that just follows the zeitgeist of the moment.
Introducing Live is an event for young people who are aspiring artists or have a particular interest in the music industry. Are you excited to share your experience with them?
Yes, most of our artists are over 70 so it will be great to meet some of the new blood! Always love sharing experiences too - during the early 2000s, I helped programme grime nights at a venue in Stratford when that music was finding its feet. It was great to see some of those artists go on to great careers.
