Rosy-Fingered Dawn at Louise Point • Willem de Kooning • 1963
Many Dutchmen emigrated to the US before the World War II. De Kooning is an example. He travelled to the US as a stowaway, arrived in Virginia and later moved to New York and started painting. This Rosy-Fingered piece is his reference to one of his favourite places in Long Island, New York. He would ride a bike daily to Louise Point where he observed the water. What he saw is reflected in the pastel colours, the thick paint (impasto), and the active brushworks which are all bringing the painting to life. When I saw it I felt blinded by the light but I was enjoying it with my eyes open. The colours won me over.
Big finished piece: 88”x66” diptych plein air on my birthday this year: “Thirty-four.” HUGE storm over the Picuris Mountains outside Taos, NM. A bunch of detail images, too, especially of the big cloud.
This is one of the rare pieces for me: the occasional ones that arise by a special mix of good timing, appropriate grit, and a particularly strong painting day(s). It was entirely unexpected; even more so that I’d attempt the biggest vertical dimension I’ve ever done on location. And the weather that day was especially friendly to me despite storms all around.
It’s a piece that reads far better in person than in digital. Alas! Hopefully something exciting comes across digitally nonetheless. You can also see this one in progress in my previous posts and in “long form” video (7 minute) on my newly functional YouTube channel (Jivan Lee • Art) - which will feature occasional videos of me painting on location, talking about painting, and walking show installations.
