My mother and stepfather's dog Jagger dives face-first into his little pool to attack the fish inside it. You heard that right.
To better explain, you would tell him to "get the fish," and he would dive into his plastic pool and nip at the fish prints on the bottom of it. It was absurdly adorable and perfectly Waggy. His innocent, goofy, quirky, loving personality was just as warming as the summer sun.
When I think of summer, especially in the distant winter months, I place myself in this moment. My mother's house, with her comfortable back porch that overlooks the neighboring cow pasture, family nearby (a sibling or both if I'm lucky), and Jags milling about the yard stinking up the place.
However, the times they are a changin'. Jagger passed some time ago, the neighbor's field will soon be home to a stuffed-together housing development, and I see my family a little less than I would like to. We're all getting busier, and the world goes on. There's still a lot of love in this picture after all.
It's what makes me treasure moments like this even more. I just wish I could do so as they were happening still, rather than retrospectively. I'll take a distant memory over none at all.
I wish you all beautiful summer moments ahead. May they be everlasting, dear, and happier than an old pup "getting them fishies."
Happy Mother’s Day to the only person I knew who did what a mother should. She raised me since I was 5 and always made sure I had everything I needed and more. I was a spoiled brat who got everything and I mean everything I ever asked for. She’s 89 now an old dinosaur but I hope she lives for a 100 more years ❤️ #happymothersday#jellybean#imissthatdog#baba
