I got Derrick shortly after moving to Albuquerque, NM in 2006. He was about one and a half years old. His owner wanted a bearded dragon, but then acquired too many rescues and other pets. Derrick wasn't being given the care he needed or deserved. She was smart enough to realize that and find him a new home. When I went to see Derrick, he was living in an empty cage with two bricks for basking and a bowl of frozen vegetables. He was in a room by himself, isolated, no company. My heart told me he had to come home with me.
He was given to me free with his cage and lights. Of course, anybody that knows me knows that a new pet means at least $100 spent spoiling them rotten. I got to work immediately to give Derrick a nice beardie bachelor pad. Derrick didn't know what to make of cage furniture or plants. He was shocked when he was offered a huge fresh beardie salad and different types of yummy bug treats.
From the day Derrick came home with me, he ate everything in sight. He never met a thing he wouldn't try to eat. Case in point - if you held a lightbulb, keys, anything up to his cage glass, he'd charge and leave a wet tongue print on the glass. He was loveable. I never said he was the brightest, though. 🤣 I nicknamed him "The Garbage Disposal". He ate and ate. He had a bunch of favorite junk foods he got rarely, but enjoyed with zeal; beer; chocolate cake; turkey; cheeseburgers; potato chips; ice cream. He really would eat anything. Except eggplant and mushrooms. He did have standards. 🤣
When I first held Derrick, he wasn't used to being held. He wouldn't even lift his head up off my lap. I remember the first time he lifted up his head to look around. It took time, but he learned to be proud and spunky and demanding, just like a dragon should.
I used to take Derrick hiking in Petroglyph National Park in Albuquerque, right behind my apartment. People from all over the world hiked there and would stop to ask about Derrick and take my picture with him or have their picture taken with him. It makes me smile to know he brought so much joy to others and his memory lives on in vacation albums.
So Marley's new harness arrived last week!🐲💜🐞 Beautifully handmade with super soft leather. I'm very happy with it & do plan to purchase another in future! Gotta get some dragon wings next time! Unfortunately, Ms Marley is in full body shed right now though so she's not liking anything on her body, & it's gotten a wee bit chilly the past few days here in Canada🇨🇦, so she's not going outside anyway (she's learning harness means outside time. Smart girl😊). I'll be posting her showing off her new duds asap!
Absolutely recommend checking out @lizardloverz for your reptile friend! Great selection, even does customs! Thank you so much Colleen! Fantastic work! 👏😁👍👍
My whittle Eliza is happy to be out again and sleeping by the window 😋 I been gone for a few days. She always sleeps the best when I’m home and she’s in my bed lol #spoiled#beardeddragon#ilovemybeardie
