Continuing with my Maya hairstyles and headwears in the Classic period. Here are featured Tikal or Mutal and Ik, also known as Motul de San José. Tikal, the principal rival of Calakmul, was one of the great powers of the Classic Maya region. In the early Classical period they were taken over by Teotihuacan led by Spearthrower Owl and his general Siyah K'ak'(Mayan spelling of his name). A new Teotihuacano-Maya dynasty emerged here as well as Teotihuacan influence in the Maya area. Calakmul resisted this influence and eventually encircled Tikal in a careful web of alliances with surrounding cities. After a dramatic episode of betrayal within the Tikal royal family, the city went on hiatus. Tikal made an epic comeback after 130 years of little activity, with the King Jasaw Chan K'awiil who defeated Calakmul. The woman featured here is his wife, Queen Kalajuun Unen Mo' or Twelve Baby Macaw.
Motul de San José or Ik, was a kingdom ruled by Tikal however it switched allegiance to Calakmul and under Jasaw Chan K'awiil returned to Tikals side. They also had an alliance with Yaxchilan and their King Yaxun B'alam took two wives from this kingdom, Lady Wak Jalam Chan and Lady Wak Tuun. As Tikal's power waned in the Terminal Classic period, Ik continued into the early Postclassic but was abandoned eventually as well.
