Angry Wren! We were cutting down some lilac bushes by the shed and had to move this very old homemade bird house. Decided to look inside before moving it and there were eggs! We re-mounted it on the shed and the mamma has safely returned to her eggs. Hopefully babies soon! #efe_ssd_mbr  #gn_members  #m2cm_daily  #raw_birds  #nature_worldwide_birds  #your_best_birds  #bestbirdshots  #bird_brilliance  #nuts_about_birds  #eye_spy_birds  #eye_for_earth  #addictedto_nature  #efe_snapshots_daily  #pocket_allnature  #eye_spy_nature  #animalfanatics  #igw_nature  #perfect_birds  #atagwithnoname  #efe_nature_or_nothing  #tw_hotshots  #pocket_birds  #picturetokeep_birds_animals  #loves_united_animals  #usa_naturehippys  #kings_birds  #birds_ilife  #blooming_animals

American Oystercatcher || [Haematopus palliatus]

“In general, [American Oystercatchers] use their bills to catch shellfish. As they walk across a shellfish bed, they look for a mollusk with a partially opened shell. When they find one, they jab their bill into the shell and sever the muscle that causes the shell to clamp shut. This can be dangerous, however, as they are sometimes drowned when they don't completely severe this muscle and the shell clamps down on their bill. A strong, tightly rooted mollusk can hold the bird in place until the tide comes in.”
Yikes. Thanks, Wikipedia! Seems like these guys live pretty rough sometimes. You can’t see it clearly in the photo above, but the Oystercatcher’s bill is vertically flattened at the end, perfect for digging into those pesky, sometimes life-threatening mollusks. These birds are so neat looking, and I’m super excited to have gotten some great shots of them! I hope you enjoy!
