Only after the recent heavy rain do these dune pools fill with fresh water draining off the high pastures on the Cape Palliser road. This pool is hundreds of metres from the ocean, and with shelter from the wind and its temporal nature, I enjoy it while I can.
Silvereye | tauhou
A silvereye shelters under a torch lily on a cold rainy day. Torch lilies or 'red hot pokers' provide a good source of nectar for native birds such as bellbirds, tui and silvereyes.
