Lekhubu Island held an ancient civilisation. Stone buildings & walls provided protection from the salty storms the blew across the lake. The lake held its grasp on the island making it a safe haven from intruders & unwanted souls.
Fishing in the lake was plentiful, small crops could be grown & soon the island flourished with life, but it was a different breed of men who temporarily called the island home. No one person could overstay their welcome as the small island home was purely for young men to learn their lessons of life.
As soon as the boys reached puberty they were sent to the island. On arrival they were given the lowest rank on the rack. They would have to learn life’s lessons the hard way. Growing then teaching as others came.
In time they would become men, but those first few days were long & arduous. Many ending in tears, but the lakes grasp would not let them go. Stay they had too, eventually they would become men.
On silent nights it was said that the sound of sobs & dripping tears could be heard many miles across the water. Worried mothers knew their sons were facing the harsh realities of life. Their hearts broken at the thought of the rigours that their sons were facing. Many mothers could not bear the thought.
Distraught & worried they made the trek across the salty lake under the cover of night. Little did they know the island was haunted.
As soon as the mothers stepped foot on the island they became part of its fabric, their skin turned to bark. The mystical curse turning them to Baobab trees.
Today those caring mothers still reach out under to the sky long after their boys had left. The mothers stuck in time, happy knowing that those boys souls still stand beside them. Those souls discarded as their sons left the island as fully fledged men.
