CAN OKRIKA COMPETE AGAINST A 'PRIMARK' STYLE BUSINESS IN NIGERIA? .
If you read our last post on Primark, you will understand where we are with this post. We agree there are reasons people buy Okrika - Some for affordability, designer label, variety, even some people like it for the smell. There is definitely a high demand for okrika and that's why there is a huge supply. .
But can a Primark-styled business in Naija become a direct competition to Okrika? Do they serve separate markets? Can the Okrika market be improved? .
P. S. Please comment responsibly and try not to spite another person's hustle or buying behaviour. This post is meant to educate and can serve as a source of market research.
CHEAP DOESN'T MEAN POOR!!! .
Five years back I took a 2 month holiday job at Primark, Bristol, UK. Primark is a fast fashion retail store that targets the everyday buyer, selling clothing items for adults and children, accessories, footwear, beauty products, homeware, etc. below average prices.
It was a high rise building with several floors 🏢 and fully packed with almost everything you needed to fill a wardrobe. .
Primark was really cheap. It still is. Yet it was flooded with people. Lots of people. I really wondered how much money the business made on a daily. Infact it was hard to imagine. They didn't have a user website for each store, no e-commerce buying, just the basic walk in and buy store. .
Enter holiday season, it was such a stampede. The crowd was massive. Stock increased, sales skyrocketed, changing rooms were filled, everywhere was packed with customers. No wonder they needed extra staff.
Where am I going with this? Read further... .
Primark currently owns over 350 stores in over 10 countries and more stores are being opened yearly. However, not everyone is proud to be associated with this brand. They have been tagged a 'cheap' brand and most people are not so proud to associate themselves as 'cheap buyers'. Most of these people however prefer buying from other high street stores like the H&M and New Look who sell somewhat cheap, but on average. .
But Primark still has customers. Lots of them. So who are the people flooding the Primark stores? Who are the people making them turnover enough to open multiple stores worldwide? If Primark as a 'cheap' store is cashing out in multiples daily, can we say their customers are 'cheap'?
Do cheap customers exist? If yes, are you producing for them? We just turned 58 guys!!! Can we have our own 'Primark' producing bulk and cheap that can compete against the Okrika (2nd hand) clothing? .
Where are the Okrika sellers? Since we have identified a market that wants cheap, can we take it up a notch and create CHEAP + NEW? Can we start thinking production rather than bail? .
Think for a bit, let's come back to this later... .

When you collaborate with a global brand. Kai!!! 🙌🙌🙌 There is a lesson here. Listen closely.
The last time it was Dolce and Gabana. Now NIKE. But you know what? These brands need Wizzy just as he needs them. .
Wizzy represents the Nigerian youth demography who love comfort, fashion, class and lifestyle. He represents you and I - the market NIKE wants. And no, NIKE won't go for a 'nobody'. They and any other global brand make calculated steps. It's a case of scratch my back I scratch yours.
They know that once they affiliate with Wizzy, they affiliate with you. They want this and such collaboration is how they stay top of your mind. Now when you think of the fashionable Wizzy you will remember Nike. .
Collaboration is the new big thing!!!
Tell me, what global brand will you like to collaborate with? 👇👇👇
