VWA Artist in Residence Profile @markowitzdesign // Adam Markowitz is a designer, maker and architect that has trained at schools of design and woodcraft in Copenhagen, Hobart and the USA. His work combines honest traditional craftsmanship with the minimal curvature of contemporary humanist modern design, working on a mix of small batch production and custom one-off commissions.
Adam's describes his journey into woodworking and the VWA "I've always dabbled since I was a kid, but when I was going through Architecture at Melbourne Uni I had the good fortunate to take some classes with Hamish Hill, who gave me a real appreciation for the craft. After graduating I took evening classes at the VWA school while I worked as an architect. I was enjoying it so much (and secretly hating my new office life) that I ran off to study Woodcraft & Furniture Design in Hobart, which lead me to the design school in Copenhagen, and then after working as an architect for a couple of years, to the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine. On my return home in 2015 I signed up at the VWA and have been working here since then!"

Our friends at TiiPii Bed needed a reusable desk for their trade shows in the United States in lieu of having to have something new built for each exhibition.
We came up with this hexagon desk which breaks down and packs into a crate along with some of their other trade show supplies. The desk is built on a steel frame with alternating hickory and white-painted paneling. One of the white paneled sides is actually a door to allow for storage inside the desk. The desk also features a battery-powdered LED light strip.

Spent a few days in Florida for ICFF, Art Basel and Design Miami. Met some great people, saw some amazing cars, and happened upon an Eagles bar to watch the game with a couple hundred 🦅 fans. Now back to work!
