Painter Rubens an occultist?
Gary Schwartz pointed out to us a fascinating article on the occult interests of the celebrated Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens by Teresa Esposito: ‘Occult knowledge and sacred #geometry . A new interpretation of a portrait of Rubens and his son from the #Hermitage Museum’. Rubens’s interest in the #mysteries of nature is not only evident in his paintings but also from his library. In 1632 he bought a copy of an ‘omnibus edition’ of #Neoplatonic philosophers published in 1607, containing works by Iamblichus, De mysteriis Aegyptiorum, Chaldaeorum, Assyriorum. Proclus, In Platonicum Alcibiadem de anima atque daemone and De sacrificio et #magia . Porphyry, De divinis atque daemonibus. Psellus, De daemonibus and last but not least Hermes Trismegistus’ #Pimander and #Asclepius .
A copy of one of Rubens’ paintings was acquired by the first owner of the House with the Heads, Nicolas Sohier. The poet Constantijn Huygens wrote that Rubens’ painting of Medusa [plaatje?] was so horrific that it was hidden from view by a curtain. The House with the Heads has more connections with Rubens: Sohier had six large busts installed on the front of his house, perhaps in imitation of the six busts which Rubens commissioned for his own workshop which can still be visited in #Antwerp .
Read the article by Teresa Esposito to find out whether there are more matches between Rubens’s library and that of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica now part of the @embassyofthefreemind in the Huis met de Hoofden - House with the Heads!
