To everyone in Amsterdam, go and see Huis met de Hoofden. A new museum filled with stories of the history and heritage of our culture and the free spirits that shaped it. I had the pleasure to go there on this cover shoot for Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds. Painter Rubens an occultist?

Gary Schwartz pointed out to us a fascinating article on the occult interests of the celebrated Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens by Teresa Esposito: ‘Occult knowledge and sacred #geometry. A new interpretation of a portrait of Rubens and his son from the #Hermitage Museum’. Rubens’s interest in the #mysteries of nature is not only evident in his paintings but also from his library. In 1632 he bought a copy of an ‘omnibus edition’ of #Neoplatonic philosophers published in 1607, containing works by Iamblichus, De mysteriis Aegyptiorum, Chaldaeorum, Assyriorum. Proclus, In Platonicum Alcibiadem de anima atque daemone and De sacrificio et #magia. Porphyry, De divinis atque daemonibus. Psellus, De daemonibus and last but not least Hermes Trismegistus’ #Pimander and #Asclepius.
A copy of one of Rubens’ paintings was acquired by the first owner of the House with the Heads, Nicolas Sohier. The poet Constantijn Huygens wrote that Rubens’ painting of Medusa [plaatje?] was so horrific that it was hidden from view by a curtain. The House with the Heads has more connections with Rubens: Sohier had six large busts installed on the front of his house, perhaps in imitation of the six busts which Rubens commissioned for his own workshop which can still be visited in #Antwerp.

Read the article by Teresa Esposito to find out whether there are more matches between Rubens’s library and that of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica now part of the @embassyofthefreemind in the Huis met de Hoofden - House with the Heads!

These examples of early modern manuscripts, printed books and rare pop-up books are part of the Ritman library, or Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica, a collection of 23.000 works in the field of the Christan-hermetic tradition. Topics include hermetica, Rosicrucianism, alchemy, mysticism, gnosis, esotericism and comparative religion. The library includes the works of a wide range of banished and persecuted freethinkers, mystics, philosophers and self-proclaimed prophets from the 15th - 18th century, most notably Jakob Böhme and his followers.
The library is the most notable private collection in the Netherlands and was recently reopened to the public as part of an institution known as The Embassy of the Free Mind (Ambassade van de Vrije Geest). The institute is located in the centre of Amsterdam, in 'The house with the Heads' (Huis met de Hoofden). In the 17th century, the house was the property of Lodewijk de Geer. He opened the place for intellectuals such as Jan Amos Comenius as a safe place. This function of a place where every individual is free to read, learn, think and express themselves, regardless of ideas, opinions, beliefs and background, is what binds this house, institution and library through the centuries.

Since I haven't had time yet to visit the Rijksmuseum to look for more silver cups, but did have time to accompany someone on an architecture spotting cycletour, a detail of the so-called "House with the heads" in the afternoon sun. In the centre of Amsterdam on the Keizersgracht, it was built in 1622 for a wealthy merchant. According to a legend the six heads on the façade of the house refer to six robbers who entered the house one time and were all decapitated by the kitchen maid, who used a breadknife for the job! However, it's also possible that the heads belong to six gods: Apollo, Ceres, Mercurius, Minerva, Bacchus and Diana. You choose!! #huismetdehoofden #amsterdam #cityview #canal #sculpture #classicalsculpture #architecture #architecturephotography #inspiration #summertime #keeplooking #staycurious #inspiringview !!

A triumph of Dutch Renaissance: "Huis met de Hoofden", Keizersgracht 123, Amsterdam. Built in 1622 for Nicolas Sohier by Hendrick and possibly Pieter de Keyser in ornate Renaissance style with carved heads and consoles, it is one of the most important buildings remaining intact from the early phase of the canal extensions. It passed into the hands of the de Geer family, who made their fortune trading I iron in the Baltic #amsterdam #canalhouse #renaissance #mansion #ornate #huismetdehoofden #keizersgracht #degeer #hendrickdekeyser #17thcentury
