Yesterday I spoke about what was my behind my pain!
Pain can be physical, mental, emotional, hormonal, nutritional, structural or?
Pain doesn't just have to be a migraine or sore body part.
Inflammation can occur anywhere on our bodies. Our amazing bodies are designed to work hard to heal that inflammation.
What if we experience a stress as a child that has stayed with us subconsciously? Or an event that happened last week that is still playing on our subconscious?
Like with my bulling at school. Until it came up in a session, I had forgotten about it. I dont see those girls anymore so why should I care to think about them?
Well it turns out that the negative energy from that time was stored in me. Festering and preventing my body from functioning as it should.
By moving that energy, guess what.... the inflammation in my back went away. Ask my chiropractor how many times I have seen him in the last few years....! (side note I still go for maintenance but I am not banging down his door in pain anymore!) It is difficult to think differently about our health however if you have an issue that is not resolving why not open your mind to a new possibility?

Let's talk #stressrelief 🤕An effective way to manage cortisol levels is to ensure that the adrenal glands are supported by the proper nutrients.
🍎Vitamin B6, pantothenic acid, and vitamin C, often become depleted when the demands on adrenal gland cortisol production are continuous.
🍗These nutrients play a critical role in the optimal function of the adrenal gland and in the manufacture of adrenal hormones L-tyrosine and L-theanine support the adrenal glands.
🌱In addition, calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese and zinc support the cortisol feedback control mechanism.

Adaptogens have normalising effects on the body - independent of the direction of deviation from the physiological norm. They enhance cellular intelligence, provide strength in presence of diminished functions and suppress excessive functions.
.
Adaptogens take effect in the body’s regulatory systems such as the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), the sympatho-adrenergic system (sympathetic nervous system and adrenal medulla) and the immune system. Secondarily they also influence, e.g. to the liver, the cardio-vascular system, the pancreas and the kidneys.

Establishing a regular bedtime routine is an important step for those who struggle with sleep issues.
.
By unplugging and unwinding a few hours before bed, we give our bodies time to slow down and prepare for sleep.
.
Do you have a regular bedtime routine? What helps have a regular routine?
.
It is never too late to start making changes and improving your sleep routine. Why not make it a priority this weekend?
.
I recommend for my patients to be in bed by 10pm and asleep by 10:30pm at the latest. if you want to wake by 6:30am - this would give a solid 8 hours of sleep which is restorative to the mind and the body.
.
The timing of sleep is critical because around 10:30pm our cortisol levels are at it's lowest and our body is actually ready to go to bed. If we stay up later, we push back this natural cortisol low to make our adrenals work harder to stay away longer.
.
DM me if you have questions about sleep.

Do you have too much cortisol pumping at the wrong times of the day?! Don’t be fooled by the concept of “adrenal fatigue”, you need to understand you likely have dysregulated cortisol patterns, which can be causing you to feel “fatigued”, wired and tired and straight up #merp
———
Here are a few signs that you actually have TOO much cortisol
———
1- You aren’t sleeping great—our cortisol levels should be lowest at nighttime, but if you find yourself tired all day, but getting your second wind at night and then feel tired again the next day, you likely have cortisol levels that are too high
———
2- Even after a full night of sleep you still feel like you could pour an entire pot of coffee on your head- over time having high amounts of cortisol can cause our body to switch a flip and take our active cortisol and have our kidneys turn it into inactive cortisone, which can make us feel tired
———
3- Body pains level 1000—too much cortisol can increase levels of prolactin, which can hyper-sensitize the brain to pain
———
4- Sex drive is crap- consider excess cortisol to be the anti-Viagra
———
5- Your gut is acting a fool- your GI tract is sensitive to stress hormones, which can cause an increase in gut issues such as bloating, diarrhea, constipation and heartburn
———
6- You feel generally blasé - high levels of cortisol can suppress the production of serotonin and deplete B and C vitamins, Zinc and Magnesium, which are required for producing our feel good neurotransmitters and hormones

Do you have problems falling or staying asleep? Your hormones may be the cause. Deep sleep that is continuous - i.e. 7 to 8 hrs without interruption - is critical for our body and our mind to reset.
.
Melatonin is a natural hormone that regulates sleep. Melatonin's production and release aligns with our body’s internal clock or circadian rhythm- rising in the evening and falling in the morning.
.
Melatonin is produced in the brain by the pineal gland when there is darkness. When there is light at night, Melatonin production is interrupted, which can make sleep difficult for those who work night shifts, travel frequently and experience jet lag, or suffer from sleep disorders.
.
Melatonin supplements are useful for resetting the internal clock, helping your body relax and catch some much needed sleep.
.
It has also been studied for it's antioxidant and anticancer benefits and can help regulate healthy blood pressure.
.
Time to get that deep sleep!

Speak to your Naturopathic Doctor about dosing and if this is the right supplement for you.

"Love never brings fear, for fear is always related to punishment. But love's perfection drives the fear of punishment far from our hearts. Whoever walks constantly afraid of punishment has not reached love's perfection."
1 John 4:18 TPT
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Oh boy, I love this verse. It's what set me free from a vicious spirit of fear that plagued me my whole life. I talkin' massive spiritual stronghold from generational iniquity of occultism and my own dabblings there (of course, because that's what generational iniquities do). I lived in a persistent state of low-grade anxiety, distrust, defensiveness and even outright terror. It's what drove my drivenness to not fail, to earn acceptance from others, myself & God, to prove I wasn't a failure as a person.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The result? Advanced stage adrenal fatigue from extreme stress, thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, food sensitivities, metabolic dysfunction, low-grade depression and more. And that was just my body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Throw in broken relationships. Broken mind. Broken faith. Broken self-image. Broken heart.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This verse taught me that the reason I was afraid is because I was not able to receive perfect love. I was always afraid of punishment, even from God (I know, I know!). I confessed my need for love to God and that's when he began to deliver me from fear into his perfect love. Process, baby, process.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Today, even though fear can try to sneak back in, I recognize that liar for who he is and firmly tell him to bug off in Jesus' name.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I know who I am now and I know how perfectly LOVED I am by my perfect Father.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Is fear your companion? He also goes by the names stress, worry, & anxiety. You’ll need to send him packing before you can get healthy.

We’re here if you need a hand.
Let’s talk. Link in bio.

In Episode 93 of the #naturallynourishedpodcast we talk all about getting autoimmune disease into remission and managing an active flare! The best way, of course, is to prevent flares in the first place by maintaining gut integrity, managing stress and reducing inflammation at a cellular level!
.
.
.
In this episode, Ali and Becki go deep into how stress and HPA axis dysfunction can manifest as a new autoimmune diagnosis or a flare of a known condition. Stress in and of itself can imbalance gut bacteria, drive leaky gut and cause an inflammatory shift in the body that left unchecked can wreak havoc on the immune system! Learn about how to rebalance and support the immune system versus suppress it using diet and strategic supplementation. Find out what Ali’s go-to formulas are for stress management, managing inflammation and supporting immune system resilience to turn off attack mode that often manifests in a flare. Tune in on iTunes, stitcher or podbean or click the podcast link in profile! #podcast #healthpodcast #nutritionpodcast #autoimmunedisease

Busyness is what we do as a distraction. It is rule following, performance, and filling up space so we don’t have to be with our own emotions.

Being-ness is being with. This is being in the feminine. This allows our bodies to breathe, and those around us to breathe too.
When we are in the busyness is it exhausting on our adrenals, digestive systems, hormones, and emotions.

It is really easy to disconnect from our hearts and distract ourself in our busyness.

Someway along the line our authentic self was shut down and we were told not to shine so bright, or be that way, or our emotions were rejected, and so we buried it, and sacrificed them on the alter of performance.

This performance and busyness has our hormones, relationships, bodies and self worth at an all time low.

We are so disconnected from our bodies and in performance mode.

How does this feel love?

I teach women how to stop the busyness and get into being-ness. I get them back in their bodies to show up connected to their hearts, and they see the changes this brings both physically and emotionally.
What is happening inside of us is always reflected on the outside. In so many ways.
Stop distracting yourself with busyness and finally just be my love.

I am happy to show you how so your body can sigh a deep sigh of relief, and finally you can be present and at home in your body at last.

Hey folks! So my social media detox has finished + I'm ready for a binge. I write part 3 of my post trilogy from a sunbed in the sunny hills of Spain 🙆🌞⛱️ where I'm focusing on healing my HPA axis😉. Before continuing, check out part 1+2, which outline the condition, as well as the key factors in recovering from it.
.
Just to give you an update on my own adrenal status👉 I've actually been losing a ton of hair the past 6 months, which I originally put down to the chlorine-ridden water supply, but have since realised it's the result of a hormonal imbalance. It's been almost a year since I started this particular healing journey, + although I have my off-days (involving blood sugar dysregulation + sudden adrenal "crashes" that bring on severe fatigue😣), I'm a million times better than I was.😌

There's still a way to go, but after getting myself into 4th stage dysfunction (aka "burnout"🔥), I can't expect my body to heal itself overnight. It took 5 years to reach the point where my cortisol levels were flat-lined, so I feel it's going to take at least another year to fully return to healthy function! 🙏
.
In parts 1+2, I pointed out that sleep + regular meals are essential for recovery. I'm now going to give you the down-low on food + supplements.👇
.
🧡Magnesium
Helps the body cope to stress, tired muscles, anxiety + sleep. I take it daily, at bedtime.
.
🧡B Complex
Essential for the production of energy inside cells, as well as immunity + hormone production. I supplement it with breakfast + lunch.
.
🧡Vitamin C
The adrenals heavily rely on this for production of cortisol. I try to eat all the colours of the rainbow every day to obtain this vital nutrient.🌈
.
🧡Ashwaghanda
This adaptogenic herb has a calming effect, helps boost energy + normalises imbalances to help counteract chronic stress. I take it in combo with licorice.
.
🧡Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ)
An important catalyst for many cellular reactions, PQQ increases mitochondrial function, scavenges free radicals + boosts brain function.
.
🧡Reishi
A powerful mushroom 🍄 that can help reboot circadian rhythm, modulate the immune system, blood sugar levels + hormone production.

It's been almost a year since I started this particular healing journey, + although I have my off-days (involving blood sugar dysregulation + sudden adrenal "crashes" that bring on severe fatigue😣), I'm a million times better than I was.😌 . I wish everyone had the chance to read this book. It’s not just for practitioners but for anyone who’s ever experienced trauma, or been witness to a trauma response in someone else.
Trauma that becomes trapped in the body is destructive. The nervous system, HPA axis, brain, organs and other glands become compromised by trauma, as it pings around our system like a ping pong ball.
It’s one of the reasons I love the work I do. Kinesiology is an amazing tool for helping to release these stored patterns of terror, grief, shock and more, resettling your body systems back to homeostasis.

This book is a classic, and so helpful for anyone who‘d like to understand trauma and its impact.
Trauma is way more common than most people think! And actually we could all do with regularly allowing our systems to settle and re-set. 🙏💙

Absolutely fascinating. Using germ-free mice, researchers in the Czech Republic have now shown that gut microbes regulate our emotional behavior and the resilience of our gut, brain, and immune system to social stress.⠀
.⠀
This provides more evidence that gut dysbiosis or other gut pathologies might be the root cause of abnormal stress responses and dysregulation of the HPA axis.⠀
.⠀
You can expect a full break-down of this study and it's implications on my blog sometime in the next few months! Subscribe to my weekly newsletter at NGmedicine.com.⠀

🌝#Exercise and mental health: Improvements in mood are proposed to be caused by exercise-induced increase in blood circulation to the brain and by an influence on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and, thus, on the physiologic reactivity to stress. This physiologic influence is probably mediated by the communication of the #HPAaxis with several regions of the #brain, including the #limbic system, which controls motivation and mood; the #amygdala, which generates #fear in response to stress; and the hippocampus, which plays an important part in #memory formation as well as in #mood and #motivation.

It's fairly well established that cortisol, the body's stress hormone🌑⚡️, increases TSH levels, while inhibiting the conversion of T4 to T3, the body's active thyroid hormone.☄️This, in part, explains why chronic stress and hypothyroidism go hand-in-hand, due to HPA axis dysregulation.🌪It's surprising, though, that there aren't more studies on precisely defining this mechanism.
___
Cortisol also has an orchestrated effect in lowering the immune system's defenses, setting one up for chronic infectious disease.
___
In other words, chronic stress can be a double-whammy on metabolic function and immune function, which I discuss in this article (👉🏼link in bio).

After a fun Saturday night🎉 but not so fun Sunday🤢, I am feeling way better and back to my usual self. I think you can tell I’m feeling better if I’m cooking up a storm in the kitchen.🌪👩🏻‍🍳After an acupuncture appt (I thankfully didn’t cancel), I made my way to the grocery store and stocked up on all the nourishing gut healing foods. I meal prepped a vegan detox broth (see my story!), frittata to last us through the week and then made dinner, which was this delicious massaged kale and baked sweet potato salad with chicken breast and sautéed onions, tomato, olives and cilantro. So good. 🍠🍅🌿

Stress Is Definitely Impacting Your Health.
-
Most people will say, I'm sure it's just 'stresss' that is causing my problems. But simply recognizing stress is a problem is not enough.
-
It's important to identify and quantify the source of your stress in order to truly correct it.
-
Ultimately it comes down to whether or not you're having HPA Axis Dysfunction and HPA axis dysfunction can be caused by several elements of our modern lifestyle.
-
This image is a chart by Dr. Guilliams, a stress physiology expert, that places stress into 4 categories...
-
Category 1 is perceived stress. This is what most people think about when they think about stress. It includes lack of control, burnout, relationships and imbalances in brain chemistry such as serotonin, dopamine, GABA and DHEA(S).
-
Category 2 is Circadian Disruption. This is the stress that we experience due to sleep disturbance, shift work, jet lag and abnormal light/dark signals.
-
Category 3 is caused by Inflammatory signals. Inflammation can be caused by digestive problems, arthritis or autoimmune conditions, heart disease, skin problems, allergies, overtraining or nutrient deficiencies.
-
Category 4 is caused by Glycemic Dysregulation. This usually begins with poor diet choices, meal timing and/or stress eating that eventually cause sugar dysregulation.
-
If you believe stress is part of your health problems, then you must appreciate the complexity of addressing it.
-
The takeaway here is that you cannot supplement your way out of HPA axis dysfunction. You have to address behavior, lifestyle, and underlying pathologies such as gut issues, chronic infections, toxic exposure, hypothyroidism and all things that lead to glycemic dysregulation.

STRESS// There are many different things that contribute to stress and each individual will experience it in a completely different way~
Components that may contribute to stress include:
~Perceived Stress (mental/emotional)
~Glycemic Dysregulation (High GI meals)
~Inflammatory Signals (infections/allergies)
~Circadian Disruption (sleep issues)
.
The stress response tends to not know the difference between perceived stress and/or real stress and problems arise when this complex system does not turn off long after the stress has been eradicated
.
There are many nutrients and herbs such as adaptogens that can help to balance this system and help to support the adrenals and restore energy//
As a practitioner I love this area of medicine as patient’s bodies tend to respond quickly when support is offered~

Is it hard for you to REST when your body says: Nope, no workout today?
##

Many of us may be training for a competition so we think that if we miss a run/lifting session, our performance will suffer. That was the case for me too when I first started running marathons. However, training in already overtrained state does NOT make you faster, as I later learned.
##

But many of us ignore rest because we have this voice in our heads that says: *You're going to gain weight if you don't work out*. Raise your hand if you've worked out despite of being tired, because this voice doesn't leave you alone. 🙋🏼‍♀️ ##

If we ignore the exhaustion over a long time, it accumulates. We hope that it goes away but it simply can't happen. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result isn't smart.

##

I don't think it's a bad idea to have a training plan to follow. In fact, I follow one myself right now! But it's also important to make changes to this plan if needed, rest when necessary and ask, if there's maybe another way of movement that I want to do today.
##

It's better to prevent serious overtraining by taking some days off or find other ways to move, instead of potentially having to take months off to fully recover. #beenthere

I have often recommended the use of these compounds where necessary. However there has been the odd case where some unwanted symptoms have been noted. This can usually be traced back to poor thyroid function that often needs addressing. Some points to note
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
✅ Thyroid creates necessary organization of a broad spectrum of function
✅ Excess estrogen cannot be resolved by supplemental progesterone when thyroid is inhibited.
✅ Estrogen detoxification is achieved by adequate energy and thyroid hormone. ✅Progesterone can enhance insulin and blood sugar regulation, organize reproductive tissue and menstrual cycle irregularities but still requires adequate thyroid.
✅ Hypogonadic states such as low Testosterone and progesterone need a proper thyroid evaluation beyond TSH, Ft4 Ft3. Temperature, pulse and symptoms may be a better reflection if these draw a blank
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Assuming the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland as the sole source of feedback is problematic and therefore blood tests can be unreliable. So if you keep getting normal bloods back.... #bloodtests #thyroid #progesterone #estrogen #testosterone #growthhormone #pituitary #hpaaxis #energy #health #hormones #endocrinology

I’ve been saying it for years, you simply can’t outrun a bad diet, so are you really working out for the right reasons ?
_______
You can workout for an hour, but controlling what goes into your body the other 23 hours is what’s hard. Research shows that focusing solely on exercise is not the answer to losing weight
________
If you are looking to maintain your fat loss efforts, then you need to focus equally on a quality diet and the appropriate amount of exercise!
____
Exercise is important for overall health, but to sustain weight loss on an exercise-only program is not as successful as you might have thought. Increased exercise can also lead to increased huger, dysregulated cortisol levels and hormone imbalances if your “stress bucket” is already over-flowing
_________
Remember, working out is a stress on the body (eustress, a good one) but if you have overwhelmed your body’s stress response or have not built back up vital reserves for dealing with ALL the forms of stress, then you might be doing your body, hormones and cells more harm than good
____
If you are hitting the gym ever day but still aren’t seeing the results you are looking for, then fine-tuning your individual lifestyle and diet habits should be your next major focus
______
You should also be addressing nutrient and mineral deficiencies, underlying hormone imbalances, HPA axis dysregulation, hidden fungal/bacterial overgrowth, food intolerances (sulfur, histamine, FODMAP, gluten, dairy etc) environmental toxins (including personal care products, poor quality protein, cleaning products, plastics etc) and factors like detoxification pathways (liver/kidney/gut health) quality of sleep, life/work balance, mental emotional stress and past emotional traumas
______
Go play outside, hit the slopes, paddle board, ride a bike, golf, swim or find some form of “movement” that you enjoy ... find a workout routine that works for you and that you actually enjoy... consistency and enjoyment are a much better approach to fitness than punishment

Studying is difficult because I can’t stay on topic. One cool idea/connection and it’s down the rabbit hole for Kathryn. ••• HPA Axis! How your body regulates like, almost everything. (1) The Stressor. Did you know that ANY type of stress is handled the same way, physiological, in your body? This is why things like yoga and meditation have very real effects. It’s very much a fad right now to over exaggerate your negative realities. Choose your battles. Diet. Yeah, me too. Anti-inflammatory diet post in the future. (2) the HPA axis itself. This is a mechanism by which your brain (the conscious and unconscious) communicates with the body to make things happen. Good thoughts/memories/“vibes”? Good things downstream (systemically). (3) The effects of stress from the top down. Look at all of the things your pituitary effects. Dysfunction there can cause a host of problems. The adrenal glands produce cortisol (not a bad guy in its normal amounts). Stress, however, increases cortisol beyond where it should be. This effects yet another host of things in your body. One way to regulate cortisol is by honoring its natural fluctuations. Go to bed at a decent hour and wake up early with some sunshine. Aspects of our health can be quite simple. ••• Find a doctor who is willing to dig deep and find out the level of the CAUSE of your dysfunction. Sure, there will always be many layers and many things to address..but it began somewhere. This stuff is like an exciting puzzle with huge rewarding outcomes: Helping people 1) get well 2) adapt a lifestyle/learn how to stay well 3) honor and respect the amazingly designed system in your body that wants to work FOR you not against you. #hpaaxis #stressregulation #functionalmedicine #cortisol #health #brainbodyconnection #wellness #innate #chiropractic #integrativemedicine

Commonly called Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus, syn. Acanthopanax senticosus) , it's is better to be called Eleuthero, because it's not a true ginseng. Often classified as an adaptation herb, it's thought that Eleuthero supports the endocrine system, especially the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis, and many utilize it for fatigue and burnout, although clinical trails and individual response varies. Shown in preclinical studies to support against toxic compounds, benefit the cardiovascular system, be anti-inflammatory; although uncommon, it has been known to increase blood pressure. The solid extract is a favorite of my students when we are sampling herbs in class. This Eleuthero lives at the @mortonarb.

Narrowed airways are associated with activation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis and imbalance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems - the autonomic nervous system. Narrowing of the airway is also worsened by allergy, cold and weight gain and is associated with laryngopharyngeal reflux which can further inflame the airway. More information in our blog. Adaptogenic herbs play a key role in regulating various metabolic processes through improvement in HPA functioning, increasing production of endogenous antioxidants, reducing oxidative damage, regulating cortisol output and increasing resistance against multiple stressors "
____
An adaptogen increases the powers of resistance against physical, chemical, or biological noxious agents, and has a normalizing influence on the body
——
Adaptogens are a unique class of plants that can have particular healing abilities. They may be able to help balance, protect, restore your body, and normalize psychological function
____
Research has found that adaptogens reduce the reactivity of the individuals' defense systems, while also decreasing the damaging effects of various stressors due to the increased basal level of mediators that are involved in the stress response

Because our society is addicted to instant gratification, many individuals turn to HRT seeking symptom relief from common hormone imbalances. As handy as HRT can be, it does nothing to fix the underlying cause of WHY the hormone is out of range to begin with! I have many clients dealing with Low Testosterone symptoms and may not even be aware. It wreaks your performance in the bed, gym and quality of everyday life. Your risk of injury, disease and lack of longevity sky rocket that’s why it is crucial to monitor your levels. This is just Overview of the benefits of healthy Testosterone levels. Many believe that testosterone causes prostate cancer when testosterone has been shown to prevent that. Home brewed herbalism: Supreme Adrenal Restoration Tea
- Rehmannia root (powerful Jing energy, kidney support)
- Astragalus (potent lung tonic)
- Pau d'arco (#1 anticandida herb in the world, and an overall incredible antifungal)
- Schizandra berries (supreme liver tonic)
- Goji berries (liver tonic and rich in antioxidant, polysaccharides, and methylation supporting betaine)
- Vanilla bean (amazing levity qualities, only orchid that has a fruit!) Thyroid dysfunction is extremely common (especially in women) and largely under diagnosed. Also, hypothyroidism is actually autoimmune hashimoto's thyroiditis about 80% of the time, but often physicians don't look for autoimmunity... or even a full thyroid panel for that matter. Further, they have no solutions beyond medication. As of now, a Functional approach is the only route to achieve remission. I don't say this out if bias, but fact. Autoimmunity truly requires a holistic lifestyle and root cause approach. I work with many autoimmune thyroid clients and have seen enormous success when we take the functional road. If you feel this list describes you, but you've been told "everything looks normal" maybe it's time for a better way! Info@metabolicsolutionsllc.com

You ever get so excited about doing breathing exercises (I DID and still DO) that you tried yoga, wim hoff, etc and found out that you could barely inhale and exhale for a 3s tempo!? OR that you couldn’t keep up with the yoga instructors 8s inhale and 8s exhale? OR learn by doing Wim Hoff that your ability to hold your breath was about 10-15s!? I think most people go through this. Why? 🧠
For one, we MUST learn how to breath through our nose before you use our breath to manipulate our physiology. If you don’t increase nasal plasticity, most of what you are doing will not meet your physiological state and possible cause stress. Yup! Exactly what you are NOT trying to do.
🧠
Secondly if you cannot access your diaphragm, then how are you breathing while trying to do all these cool tempos? Well, with your chest and neck muscles, which are not primary muscles of respiration. As well, maybe this is why you can’t do all these crazy fun tempos because your not accessing your primary muscle of respiration – The Diaphragm. 🧠
Lastly, you need both the above to be able to use breath work to influence your nervous system, vagal tone and body in a positive – or I should say efficient way. 🧠 “To normalize breathing volume, you need to practice simple relaxation exercises. This is achieved by brining a feeling of relaxation to your body encouraging your breathing to decrease to a point where you feel a tolerable hunger for air. When the body experiences this sustained shortage of air, the breathing center in the brain is reset (H-P-A axis) to lower the breathing volume, encouraging calmer and gentler breathing.” C. Buteyko

Oh yes, this one got me this morning!
☝️
It’s a pretty wild idea, but in the same way the blunting of a hormone becomes something more fundamental over time, chronic pain and suffering can start looking like personality changes over time. If someone struggles to get up in the morning and feels terrible until lunch time, it’s easy to write them off as ‘grump’ or just a jerk 😬
👉 Imagine if you were in constant pain. How easy would it be to be cheerful all the time, or sociable?
Chronic pain changes personalities. But the good news is, it doesn’t have to be permanent. I’ve seen people recover and improve their health, and once each day isn’t such a struggle any more, start feeling more like the happy person they used to be.☀️

We so much enjoyed chatting with dietitian @lauraschoenfeldrd about how we can support our adrenals, reduce stress, and find that happy, healthy place our bodies crave! We had a wonderful conversation with Laura—including some really specific advice—and as you’ll hear, she really knows her stuff!
.
This was a really great reminder that so many women work hard on maintaining their health, but end up overstressed, overtrained, and undernourished. Let's keep taking care of our bodies, but in a way that allows us to get back to a space of physical, mental, and emotional nourishment!

We Chat About:
✨The danger of using body image to define self-worth + when dieting becomes too restrictive
✨Finding out carbs aren’t the enemy ✨Adrenals and all the neat things they do
✨When stress can be good + when it’s just bad
✨Which came first, adrenal or gut flora issues? (a.k.a. The chicken and the egg question)
✨Why we undereat by accident
✨Practicing self-love + giving yourself a little grace

✨POST WORKOUT EUPHORIA!✨
🧘🏻‍♀️Why?? Because my workouts have been VERY different recently. I’ve been trying this new thing called listening to my body and, it’s pretty amazing!
..
🤦🏻‍♀️I went from playing college soccer, into running full marathons (26.2) and then right into crossfit. Needless to say, I’ve never given my body a break from intense exercise. I decided to take a step back because my body was screaming at me to do so. Some of the symptoms I was experiencing included: intense fatigue, needing a ton of caffeine, anxiety, headaches post workout, lack of progress in the gym even though I was working out harder than ever and eating (what I thought at the time) better than ever, unexplainable weight gain, lack of muscle definition, and more. It took me a long time to stop and listen to my body but I am so glad I did! Here’s the thing, our bodies are not meant to be driven into the ground day in and day out. They need rest and they need enough fuel to function at optimal levels!
..
💡Maybe you have heard of some of the many names for the different diagnoses that are often associated with the myriad of symptoms mentioned above:
Adrenal Fatigue, Adrenal Insufficiency, Adrenal Dysfunction, HPA Axis Dysfunction, Metabolic Syndrome, Metabolic Damage, Metabolic Adaptation
..
🗯Regardless of the name, this is something people can experience and many may not even know it’s happening.
..
‼️In short, here’s what is happening to the body when it is overtrained and under nourished: The body slows down the metabolism which increasing stress on the body and in turn increases the hormone, cortisol.
..
🌪When we increase cortisol, all of our other hormones are affected as well. This could mean a decrease in other hormones such as thyroid and sex hormones which will ultimately lead to the HPA Axis Dysfunction or any one of the other names mentioned above.
..
🎉💪🏽🥑The good news is, slowly but surely adding in calories (and increasing healthy fats!) and decreasing exercise in a systematic way can help! I highly recommend working with a practitioner to do this.

Lotsa blank space here and I feel like I need it! The movers finished packing up our house 🏡 and that made for a pretty stressful week. The hubs and I headed out for date last night to celebrate! 🥂 I had this starter and a great salmon dish. Then, today I was exhausted. I think it’s just that the adrenaline is finally gone. I’m going to try to rest a little this week - where I can with three little kids and work! 😉 How do you rest and recharge when you’re exhausted?

Ghee....
Healthy fats have garnered a lot of attention lately. Right alongside familiar favorites like olive oil and coconut oil is ghee, a type of fat made by heating butter — ideally grass-fed butter — to boost its natural nutrient profile and flavor. Ghee is full of fat-soluble vitamins and healthy fatty acids, and ghee benefits can range from building stronger bones to enhancing weight loss. It’s high smoke point (just short of 500 degrees) makes it invaluable for sautéeing, roasting and baking without destroying vital nutrients and contains the coveted #conjugatedlinoleicacid (CLA’s). For best results try to find pasture raised since most butter and butter products tend not to be these days. The ghee shown here was made with love and #tumeric a known anti inflammatory food.

I absolutely love this product. This is fermented ashwagandha by @botanicahealth 🙌 Ashwagandha is one of the best herbs you can use for adrenal health. And the reason I love this product so much is because it is fermented so it comes with even more benefits than just the adrenal health benefits. The fermentation process produces beneficial yeast and bacteria as well as enzymes, organic acids, B vitamins, and more that nourish your health. I have no affiliation with Botanical Health, I just love all their fermented products. 💕

You ever get that “wired but tired” feeling at night, where you just can’t seem to wind down or relax, feeling more energetic in the evening than all throughout the day? This is likely due to a disruption in your circadian rhythm, a symphony of hormones that are released according to light and dark cycles each day and night. Sitting under dull fluorescent bulbs all day and immersing ourselves in the bright screens of electronics all night leads our natural light dark cycles to get flip flopped and interrupt our quality and quantity of sleep. If you’re one who wants to have your cake and eat it too, try adding these blue light blocking glasses to your evening routine. I wear mine as soon as the sun goes down to tell my body that it’s night time even when using my phone, laptop, or television in the evening. This girl sleeps like a friggin champ and wakes up rested and ready for a very productive day. Try ‘em! Totally worth it! @swanwicksleep .
Ps. The second pic was taken in the bright lights of a parking garage at 9:30pm after #deadpool2, and I wore these babies the whole movie too.

Did you know research from the University of Maryland found you’re 30 times more likely to laugh around other people than when you are by yourself!?
_____
Research from Loma Linda University has found laughter to cause the opposite effects of stress on the body and increase levels of feel good neurotransmitters such as serotonin
____
Laughter has been linked to health benefits ranging from lower levels of inflammatory markers in the blood, to improved blood flow and arterial health and increased activity of killer cells, which promote immune system functioning
___
Laughter has been shown to causes a change in the way your brain’s neurons communicate with one each other; laughter can induce “gamma” frequencies, the type of brain waves found in those who meditate. Gamma waves have been linked to improvement of neuronal activity that deals with synchronization, recollection and memory
_____
Laughter can even enhance your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulate your heart, lungs and muscles, increases the endorphins released by your brain (such as oxytocin) and may ease pain by causing the body to produce its own natural painkillers aka endorphins
____
Laughter has been down to shuts down the release of stress hormones like cortisol, while also triggering the production of feel-good neurochemicals like dopamine, which have calming and anti-anxiety benefits
____
Endorphins are brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters that can be found in the pituitary gland and are distributed throughout the nervous system....they can interact with the opiate receptors in the brain to reduce our perception of pain and act similarly to drugs such as morphine
______
Secretion of endorphins can lead to feelings of euphoria, modulation of appetite, reduced feelings of pain, release of sex hormones, and enhancement of the immune response

The hormones, such as testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and cortisol, are produced within the mitochondria. The mitochondria reside within their respective glands, the adrenal glands, or the ovaries and testes, however that doesn't mean that the mitochondria should be ignored.
It doesn't matter how well the organ is functioning if the mitochondria aren't functioning to their full capacity. By addressing the efficiency of the mitochondria, your body is better able to respond and adjust hormones as appropriate.
Don't forget about the mitochondria.

||THE TRUTH ABOUT CORTISOL ||
.
.
Can we talk about cortisol for a minute? I see a lot of misconceptions out there, and frankly, cortisol gets a bad rap. .
.
How often do you see teas, superfoods, meditations, yoga practices, and supplements aimed at reducing, decreasing or getting rid of that pesky cortisol? But is less really better?
.
.
When you hear “cortisol” you probably think “bad stress hormone”. Let’s set the record straight! .
.
(Bear with me as I use some clinical terminology.)
.
.
The adrenergic (adrenaline/epinephrine & norepinephrine) sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the HPA axis glucocorticoid (cortisol) system regulate and balance each other under healthy conditions. .
.
When we feel threatened, it is the SNS and adrenaline that prepares us for fight or flight, and it is cortisol that puts the breaks on the SNS in order to downregulate hyperarousal and return us to a regulated homeostasis. .
.
Here’s the nutshell: .
•Adrenaline = gas
•Cortisol = breaks .
.
Without cortisol, we would constantly be in fight, flight or freeze, and this is exactly what happens in PTSD. .
.
It is an excess of adrenaline/norepinephrine that is associated with hypervigilance, dissociation, aggression, reexperiencing, panic attacks and the encoding of emotionally laden traumatic memories in PTSD. .
.
Usually, cortisol works with neuropeptide Y (a neuroprotective steroid) to buffer against PTSD by acting as an endogenous anxiolytic (I.e. a natural anti-anxiety agent). .
.
But when a traumatic event overwhelms the system, glucocorticoid signaling is impaired and cortisol levels drop, so the brain isn’t able to downregulate SNS activation and the brain becomes more vulnerable to PTSD. .
.
Indeed, low levels of cortisol are found in PTSD. .
.
This doesn’t mean an excess of cortisol is good. An excess of anything isn’t good. But the next time someone wants you to buy their products to help eradicate cortisol, remember that without cortisol, we’d all be having panic attacks right now! .

Healing the Hypothalamus - Pituitary - Adrenal (HPA) Axis (Stress response system) often involves making significant lifestyle changes. We must sometimes shift the way we view ourselves and how we relate to the world around us. This can be very difficult, and much more difficult than taking a supplement, medication or even trying a new diet. This shift requires a high level of self awareness, and a willingness to exam ourselves, our beliefs, our old habits and our patterns of behavior.
4 Categories of stressors that lead to chronic HPA axis dysregulation by Dr. Guilliams - "N.U.T.S." Novelty of event
Unpredictable nature of event

GRATITUDE ON MY MIND THIS MORNING 💕
Thank you so much to the wonderful ladies that came to my Goddess Girls Night last night 💕
I really appreciated how everyone was so inquisitive & held space for each other as we chatted
💕
My biggest takeaway last night was how each lady made a little action ✏for this week....most said they CAN & WILL take 8 deep breaths where-ever they are in the day this week....to get them into the POWERFUL healing rest & digest mode.
💕
After all...knowing juicy info & APPLYING IT are two seperate things....and taking action is so important to feel like the best version of ourselves.
💕
This is just the type of action we will be taking next week, from wherever you are in the World🌍 you can join in my private facebook group for 'Women's Wellness Week'. Link in bio ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️
💕
Huge thanks to @thatprotein - the chocolate smoothies went down a treat! I even converted 'non smoothie drinkers'!!!

Sprinkling functional medicine everywhere I go.
.
.
I get so excited when I see new patients because I know they are finally getting excellent functional medicine care. So many people don't know about functional medicine or where to go. Sharing with others inside and outside of our tribe is so important.
.
.
Maybe my husband being super cute helped someone that happened to be shopping at @thebarncastlerock on Sunday 💗
